EXERCISE ARROGATE NIBBLER BEGINS
International military readiness exercise starts with naval operations in the Sea of Nautarya

the Sea of Nautarya
Via the Aininian Press Association - Exercise Arrogate Nibbler, a training operation conducted by the Organization of Nautaryan Unity with many international partners, has officially started. Kicking off the three-week mission will be an anti-piracy drill in which dozens of warships from the Aininian, East Nautaryan, Maganese, Pavon, Qianrongese, Scotian and Irvadi Navies will engage in a number of simulated scenarios, ranging from hostage negotiation with pirates to thwarting an ongoing attack against oil tankers. Warships and naval aircraft will participate, while land-based communications and intelligence forces are also expected to contribute.

Marine commandos from Francilie will join the Scotian and Aininian marine corps in practicing hostage rescue and enemy suppression tactics on the high seas, while land-based fighters and patrol planes of the Daeconese, Francesian, Walmish and Aininian air forces will contribute by testing reconnaissance equipment and practicing visual searching and tracking techniques.

In a keynote speech, Field Marshal Carl d'Iberville, chief of staff of the Aininian Army, pledged "all necessary support" for Nautasian countries in the face of the Caliphate, and praised the servicemen and women participating in the exercise as "the world's vanguard against radicalism, terror and violence." The defence ministers and several senior military commanders of many partner countries were present at the ceremony, according to a guest list released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Esquarian Community. The four-hour ceremony featured honour guards from all twelve participating nations and a mass review of approximately 10,000 personnel. The reviewer was (insert vaguely Arab-sound name here), Secretary-General of the Organization of Nautaryan Unity.

Over 100,000 military personnel from twelve countries are expected to participate in the exercise over the coming weeks.

PRESIDENT OPPENHEIM CONGRATULATES SVENSSON FOR VICTORY
President also speaks of Shjoraski's defeat, others comment on future Svensson presidency

Date: November 11, 2015

Image
President Oppenheim praised Svensson for the
election results in Luziyca.

In the Luziycan elections held yesterday, the Svensson-led Liberal Party emerged as the most successful party and will eventually form a majority government in the country. The Social Credit Party participated for the first time since 1970 and the Christian Luziycan party made gains in the House of Representatives. All came at the expense of the Whig Party and the National Luziycan Party which respectively lost 187 and 51 seats. The Senate would also see a Liberal majority, and the election will end the longtime Whig control over Luziyca.

President Yksteldehs Oppenheim called Sera Svensson in regards to her party's victory. "I would like to sincerely congratulate you [Svensson] and your party for achieving so much success in the elections," the President was noted saying, "the Pavonistadian States and I would certainly be pleased to cooperate with you and your future government." The President also offered commiserations for Breuvi Shjoraski and the Whig Party, acknowledging their 28-year service to Luziyca regardless of negative attributes.

Party leaders in Pavonistade also commented on the outcomes of the Luziycan elections. Calvin Almor, the chairperson of the Liberal Party of Pavonistade, stated he is "very pleased about the success of Svensson and her Liberal Party". Capitalist Party chairperson Vanessa D'Artoise said she "is looking forward to Sera Svensson's presidency in spite of differences", and a similar message was echoed by the Capitalist Party and Pavonistade First. The Domination Party chairperson, Patrick Adrov, said he is "wary of the new presidency" but also added he is willing to put aside differences and cooperate with the Liberal-led Luziycan government in the future.

Aside from Pavonistadians, the Ocelotians have also spoken out regarding Svensson's breakthrough; Governor-President Howard Miten and Sinhakese interim president Helga Duta congratulated the Luziycan Liberal Party.

Mixed reaction to "Svensson Communique" in Namor
November 11, NMR 2377

presidential election
NAMO, CAPITAL DISTRICT - Not so long after winning the election, Luziycan president-elect Sera Svensson responded to a congratulatory message by President-General Fu Wen with a communique of her own, where she outlined her policy towards Namor and the questions of Nantai and Txotai. The "Svensson Communique," as the message has since been called in Namor, received mixed reactions from Namorese.

in response to President-General Fu Wen's congratulatory message
was welcomed by some Namorese, but loathed by others as a sign
detente has failed from the start

Svensson, the 49 year-old leader of Luziyca's main opposition party, was elected president in the November 10 general election. Shortly after her election, multiple governments, including Namor's, sent messages congratulating her for her victory.

"As you may know, Namo-Luziycan relations have improved over the past few years. Despite differences, Namor and Luziyca are good neighbors and key players in ensuring stability and prosperity in South Velkia, Western Esquarium and the world at large. In establishing diplomatic ties and strengthening exchanges, both our countries have shown the rest of the world - and our own peoples - that any difference between our countries can be resolved through diplomacy and mutual understanding. I have full confidence that under the new administration, led by yourself, the two countries can continue to cooperate in maintaining world peace," read President-General Fu Wen's congratulatory message.

Fu's message was significant, as it was the first time a Namorese President-General congratulated someone for her victory in a Luziycan election. When Breuvi Shjoraski was elected president in 2012, Namor and Luziyca did not have diplomatic relations with each other.

In response, Svensson issued a communique to Fu. Carbon copies of the communique were also issued to Namor's presidential candidates. Unlike Fu, who did not go into detail about "differences" between the two countries, Svensson mentioned these "differences" in question and outlined her policies in regards to them. This was what many say made the communique especially controversial.

Why some are praising the communique

On the bright side was Svensson's take on the Txotai question. Although she fell short of calling the region by its legitimate name, she did call it "the northwestern region of Namor situated directly east of Geadland," suggesting that she recognizes Txotai as an integral part of Namor. Svensson went forth to call for cooperation between the two countries "to clamp down on the OGIE's militant activities, and prevent them from conducting any further terrorist attacks within Namor, as well as similar-minded organizations that wish to 'liberate' that region using terrorism."

This drew praise from many Namorese politicians, including Txotai's Head of State Wei Siang. "She explicitly mentioned the separatists and how they serve as an impediment to our security," he said. "I can't help but feel optimistic that the president-elect of a country that has long backed the separatist forces now acknowledges that separatists are past their prime and don't deserve further support from anybody."

James Narayev, chairman of the Txotai All-Otekian Party, saw the Svensson Communique as a sign of future Namo-Luziycan cooperation in promoting ethnic unity instead of strife.

"The Luziycans have been pursuing an imperialistic policy of arming and training the separatists, and they've been quite influential. I'm hoping that Svensson can turn this around, and instead of using her country's influence to undermine Namorese sovereignty, she uses her influence to build better ties between Txotai's ethnic groups."

Johannes Ruben of Txotai's Geadish List said he is a bit skeptical about the communique, but affirmed its usefulness in containing the separatist threat.

"We must remember that Svensson still has to respond to a largely Namophobic constituency, and some of her policies may not be in the best interests of Txotai's people," he said. "But in the long run, I think there will be a day when her administration dares to call this region by its real name, instead of sticking with the separatist line."

In a deviation from the rhetoric of past Luziycan leaders, Svensson agreed that William Bush's war of aggression against Namor was a "senseless waste of human life," agreeing with Fu that "even historic arch-enemies can engage in diplomatic relations and mutual understanding."

Namorese who view the communique optimistically say Svensson is genuine in pledging the continuation of stable Namo-Luziycan relations. Among them include former President-General Alicia Wolf.

"It's reached the point where I cannot imagine fighting another war with the Luziycans anymore, no matter who we have as our next President-General," she told PTH.

Why some are condemning the communique

But others say the Svensson Communique isn't worth celebrating about.

Svensson pointedly challenged some of the stances taken on Nantai by Namor's Popular Front presidential candidates, specifically Shohai Antelope's plan of allowing all Namorese decide their territory's political future.

"While Shohai has said that all of Namor should vote because Nantai is Namorese territory, by his logic, shouldn't all Luziycans vote in that referendum, considering that Nantai is also our territory?" she said.

But what worried Namorese the most was that Svensson said she does not regard the current designation of Nantai as a permanent solution to the question, suggesting that she favors both countries recognizing it as territory of Luziyca.

"As for the latter, I am of the opinion that while the current status quo as was negotiated by Shjoraski is a good way to ease tensions, we need a permanent solution to the Nantai dispute. The current appellation of 'Namorese territory under Luziycan administration' should not be permanent, and this leads to a proposal for a referendum," she said.

Her stance runs contrary to President-General Fu Wen's assurance to the Namorese public back in October NMR 2371 that Namor and Luziyca had "resolved" the Nantai question by jointly recognizing parts of Nantai Prefecture occupied by Luziyca as "Namorese territory under Luziycan administration."

The designation, which has since been known in Namor as the "October 7 Consensus," drew criticism from the left, which suspected the consensus would not placate Luziycan attempts at legitimizing its control of Namorese territory. These suspicions may have been justified by Svensson's communique.

"I could just tell you that I told you so," said Popular Front candidate Shohai Antelope, whom Svensson mentioned and criticized in her communique. "But this communique is evidence that Fu's detente is a failure. If Huan An wins [the election] and Luziyca starts holding referendum everywhere in Namor, and all of these referendums have a one hundred percent turnout, I wouldn't be surprised."

Front-runner Tao James said it was Fu's "obsequiousness" that resulted in the Svensson Communique.

"If Fu wasn't so soft on Luziyca, she wouldn't be saying this," he said in an interview with radio host Ting Shi.

Left-wing newspaper The Liberator ran an editorial, titled "Svensson wants to split Namor. Now What?", in which it called on "the next President-General, whoever he may be, to jump off this dangerous snake-pit," referring to Namo-Luziycan detente.

"We've stayed in this snake pit for quite a long time," the editorial read. "But if we stay here, we'll be bitten to death, and we'll only have ourselves to blame. We cannot get along with them."

Svensson Communique: its impacts on Namor and Luziyca
Image
Sera Svensson

JERUSALEM, INLEDA - After the Svensson Communique was released in response to Fu Wen's congratulatory message to President-elect Sera Svensson, her comments have drawn significant controversy, especially within Namor where Shohai said that it was "evidence that Fu's detente was a failure."

To the west of the barrier, Sera Svensson said from the Jerusalem International Airport to reporters that "I knew it was going to be controversial. That being said, I had to inform the candidates of my objectives, my policies, as well as the incumbent President-General, so to ensure that they knew of my agenda, that there are no secrets when it comes to our dealings with our neighbors in the east, especially when it comes to Nantai and northwestern Namor. We need to be both on the same page here, so at least they know of our future policy goals with Namor."

Svensson explained that "the OGIE terrorists, and similar militant organizations that fight for 'Otekian freedom'... they have no chance in freeing the region, and as such, when I take office, our new government will send a message: they are no longer welcome here in Luziyca. No longer can they use our territory as a place to attack Namor and be a thorn in Namo-Luziycan relations."

As for Nantai, Svensson stated that "The reason why I had to include that statement, that the status quo isn't an adequate solution is because while it does work in the short term, in the long run, it just kicks the problem down the road. It is better to solve this issue sooner rather than later. Just like how Shjoraski recognized East Po'ai as Namorese territory a while back, there needs to be a permanent solution that can please both sides."
"The difficulty in reaching a permanent solution," she continued, "is that if you give Nantai to the Namorese without consulting them, they would see it as betrayal. If they voted in a referendum with every other Namorese adult, their voice would not matter because they would be drowned out by the rest of Namor. Ditto if they voted in a referendum with every other Luziycan adult, but they would be drowned out by Luziyca instead. And if Namor does recognize full Luziycan sovereignty over Nantai, the Namorese would make sure that government will lose all of their seats in the next election. And, if we just let the people who live in Nantai decide, it would not satisfy Namor."
"The Nantai situation is, quite frankly, a no-win situation," she remarked. "No matter what you do, no matter what you try to achieve, at the end of the day, you will please nobody. As much as I want a referendum decided by the Nantainese regarding their own fate, it'd be impossible without Namor giving their blessing, which is almost certainly not going to happen."

"That being said," she says, "it does not mean that detente has failed from the beginning, as Shohai and Tao claimed. There have been lots of benefits: Luziyca and Namor have improved relations, they have traded extensively, and while here, 2/3rds of us are now supportive of detente, many Namorese would like turn the clock back to June 1996, when the world was this close to Armageddon as a result of the Third Namo-Luziycan War. However, it is in both of our best interests to continue stable relations with each other. It is in the best interests to ensure that detente continues despite all of its challenges that it has faced over the past several years. And it is vital that in this dangerous time that we serve as role models to the rest of the region."

In Frontiersburg, Mayor Delcho Uvarov has criticized it, saying that "It is concerning to all Otekians that Luziyca is dropping their support for fighting for Otekian liberty, for Otekian democracy and for a fair nation, just to appease relations with Namor. They may not be our arch-enemies, but Shohai and Tao may end up being the next leaders, and they could easily cut ties with us."

However, Shjoraski supported it, saying that "it is a brave step, but I have some reservations: the current situation as Nantai being Namorese territory under our administration, I think this is going to the best we will ever get. If we give more concessions, Nantainese will hate us, and if we try and hold a referendum, Namor will say it's rigged. Thus, I am afraid that will be a permanent solution. But the rest? I enthusiastically agree with. Detente must continue, for both of our sakes."

A poll shows that 52% support the Svensson Communique, 44% oppose it, and 4% are unsure/neutral.

Opinion: The Case for Fjallandic Independence

Written by Pétur Geirsson

There has been a lot of talk lately about the Vestmarkic government allowing a referendum on the issue of Fjallandic independence. While greater autonomy has long been pushed for by Fjalland, this is the first time that the talks have reached a point where independence is a definite possibility and not just an idealist vision. This is good for Fjallanders like me who actively oppose the government of Vestmark and agitate for independence. As a socialist, I have long yearned for a Fjalland free of outside influences, both corporate and political. I deeply care about the future of our culture and way of life, and that any Fjallander worth his merit should too.

One of the opinions that some of my fellow countrymen hold is that Fjalland would gain more from being (re)annexed by Vjaarland instead of outright independence, as the Vjaars would ensure that we get full autonomy in addition to generous transfers. While this is an idea worthy of discussion, it seems a bit odd to me that we would join Vjaarland. Besides Vjaarland’s decentralized nature and sharing many of their social values, we would gain nothing from a nation that had destroyed much of the Fjallandic countryside in the seventies. Who could forget the Fjølden War, which killed almost a thousand Fjallanders and who felt the full extent of the Vjaarlandic military employed upon them? Who else could forget the firebombing of Norðvík, and the cries of little children who were separated from their dead mothers in the initial attack? Certainly not I.

Others may turn to Vestmark for defense against the Vjaars, but this also fundamentally flawed - it has been shown in the Fjølden War that Vestmark does not adequately care for us and will hesitate to respond to an attack on Fjalland. We cannot trust Vestmark to come to our defense as long as they are under the influence of the global capitalists who continually rape us of our resources. As well as the security concern, they transfer the least government funds to us out of all seven of the provinces, and constantly insult our culture and way of life in their media as "backwards" and "boorish." Vestmarkic media is chock full of stereotypes, like the lazy fisherman, or the backwoods hillbilly. The money we need to preserve our culture and help our people escape poverty is a few scant ríkisdalurs. Globalization is killing us slowly by stripping us the money we need to develop and instead trusting greedy corporations to provide instead.

This brings me to my next point - our culture is endanger of dying out. Thanks to globalization, each day the Fjallandic language - unique amongst it’s kind for it’s conservativeness - becomes less and less spoken. Since the Fjølden War, the number of speakers of Fjallandic has dropped to a million (from 2,5 million in 1973). Along with declining birthrates and the commodification of our culture, we Fjallanders will become completely Vestmarkized - and as a result - internationalized - and our culture will be forgotten and replaced with the consumerist culture that already dominates us today.
In addition, both Vestmarkic countries and multinationals intrude in our space, cutting down our trees and destroying the natural beauty of Fjalland indiscriminately. As a result, we have rapidly depleting resources and poor prospects.

Some point to this as a reason that we can't survive without either Vestmark or Vjaarland backing us. However, I would counter that we still have the necessary resources to survive - we have copious amounts of timber still left, even as this timber becomes exported in large quantities to central and western Vestmark who lacks the wood. Fjalland is a heavy fishing culture, with our fjords being home to some of the biggest fish in the north, rivalled only by Atlantica in size. And while we lack the fertile fields of Vestmark, we did successfully farm the land and produce a sizable output well up to the Industrial Revolution. Finally, we still have plenty of oil to go around with natural oil seeps occuring in several important locations to the boggy south. So there is no doubt that Fjalland could not only survive as an independent country - but also thrive.

((Yes this is a crappy article. But Pétur Geirsson wrote it, and not me. Besides, crappy biased opinion pieces are realistic.))

From the Board
Why we're endorsing Huan An for Namor's Presidency-General

Image
Huan An provides better long-term solutions than his political rivals.

NOVEMBER 12, 2015- Namo, Namor- Earlier today, Radio Free Qianrong's editorial board published an editorial piece arguing for the election of Tao James as the President-General of the People's Republic of Namor. They argued that Tao James would be best at preserving detente, at restarting the Namorese economy, and in handling relations with Qianrong. We, however, have to disagree with the arguments made in the article. After thorough analysis, we have concluded Tao James and the other leftist Namorese politicians running for the Presidency-General are not the best choices for the Presidency-General due to their distaste for detente and their plans for the Namorese economy, whereas the plans made by New Democratic frontrunner Huan An will help the Namorese economy, preserve detente, and thus benefit Qianrong.

The most pressing issue for many Namorese voters will be the economy. The editorial board at Radio Free Qianrong claims that the policies espoused by Tao James and Shohai Antelope will restart the Namorese economy by inspiring confidence in the country's government. However, it should be clear that the plans espoused by Tao and Shohai would inspire fear, not confidence, in the Namorese economy. Plans for massively increased taxes and increased publicization of the economy, as well as the calls for blatant class warfare from many on the left, would only inspire fear from business owners in Namor- multinational businessmen and small business owners alike. Namorese businesses would feel threatened by higher operating costs, and would reduce their services and employment numbers under a Popular Front administration. By contrast, Huan An stands for making it easier for businesses to operate and for keeping the Namorese market free and fair, which will inspire job creation and in turn recreate the economic stability that many Namorese crave. Huan An's plans also call for actions to be taken to jump-start the economy in certain areas and further ease economic operations in many areas.

Increased economic prosperity in Namor means increased economic prosperity in South Velkia. With Huan An, this is especially so because of his calls for more laissez-faire economics and freer trade between Namor and its neighbors. More trade between Namor and its neighbors means more economic stability and prosperity not only in Namor, but in its neighbors- Luziyca, Chorea, Riro, Katranjiev, Scotia, Ainin, and Qianrong among them. Ultimately, Huan's economics will inspire economic confidence and security not only in Namor, but also in its neighbors, which will in turn help the economic situation across Esquarium.

In Luziyca, detente is now in safer hands than ever. While it is true that Breuvi Shjoraski and the Whigs oversaw some major advancements in detente- such as the meetings between Shjoraski and Namorese President-Generals Alicia Wolf and Fu Wen- Sera Svensson and the Liberals are even more openly in favor of detente than the Whigs. Svensson has campaigned on expanding negotiations and guaranteeing peace in South Velkia. She has sworn to drop Luziycan support for violent terrorism and to recognize the rights to self-determination of the Nantainese. With the Triumvirate insurgent, NOSDO imploding, terrorism still powerful in Nautasia, and Nevanmaa threatening a Third Great War against South Velkia, the sometimes tenuous peace between Luziyca and Namor is one of the few bright spots in an increasingly dark and dangerous Esquarian geopolitical scene.

Namor's political right, especially Fu Wen and Huan An, seems determined to preserve this vital peace. But the Namorese left has campaigned on its utter obliteration. The Liberator has declared detente a failure. Tao James has managed to compare Luziyca- a country that is generally recognized as democratic at home, if significantly less committed to those ideals abroad- to the internationally infamous Triumvirate regime in Koyro. Shohai has said that it would be perfectly legal for the People's Republic of Namor to provoke a war of aggression against Luziyca- a Fourth Namo-Luziycan War over Nantai. Luziycan offers to turn to the will of the Nantainese people as the final decider of Nantai's future- the doctrine of popular sovereignty, one of the most basic doctrines of democratic thought- have met a cold reaction in Namor. Tao James, Shohai Antelope, and Namsa Singho have refused to even consider that the Nantainese people might legitimately have little desire to return to Namor; they've made it a condition that, if there is going to be a referendum over Nantai's fate, the voice of the 2.5 million Nantainese people will be rendered utterly irrelevant by inexplicably pouring in the votes of 937 million Namorese on the issue.

While it is true that both Huan An and Tao James support the resumption of humanitarian aid for Qianrong, obviously we must also conclude that Huan is the better choice for Qianrong. A quarter Minjianese, Huan has campaigned extensively in Little Qianrong and has been a steadfast supporter of providing humanitarian aid to Qianrong while respecting Qianrong's national sovereignty. Because Huan's economic plans will take down trade barriers in South Velkia and Lahudica, strengthening the economies of countries like Qianrong, his election would also bring economic boons to Qianrong that might help lower cripplingly high unemployment. His policies are also far more likely to preserve the Namo-Luziycan peace, instead of provoking a massive war that would potentially spill over into other nearby countries and would shatter any economic progress made in recent months.

If the Namorese people seek belligerent rhetoric, an end to diplomacy, and economic troubles for themselves and their neighbors, then they should vote for the Popular Front's candidate, whether that candidate be Namsa, Shohai, or Tao. In the end, that is what the Namorese left offers this election. If, however, they want to preserve the peace in Western Esquarium, if they want to guarantee economic prosperity and preserve peace in South Velkia, however, then Huan An is the only real choice for President-General of the People's Republic of Namor. And the people of Qianrong should hope for a Huan presidency as well.

4:00 PM News: 15 Senators, South State Auditor Bolt to Civic Alliance
Image
Port Yehoshua's Senator Genevieve Reunolds
Good afternoon, this is the Radio West Cedarbrook 4 PM Report from Wrycova. The newly incorporated Civic Alliance Party, led by Gerard Zeller announced today in Wrycova the defection of 13 Libertarian and 2 Conservative Senators to Civic Alliance, giving it a Senate presence for the first time. There were 9 defectors from South State, 3 from Central, 2 from Coastal, and 1 from Port Yehoshua. The two Conservative defectors were from Central State. Further dissatisfaction in South State was evidenced by the simultaneous declaration in Holon of the State Auditor, Helene Tuwin, to Civic Alliance. Tuwin returned to office as an Independent Libertarian last year, refusing to share the Libertarian ticket with scandal plagued Governor James Prenevaou. Leading the Civic Alliance faction in the Senate is Port Yehoshua's Genevieve Reunolds from the Municipality's far west side. Under Senate rules all members defecting to the Civic Alliance will retain their committee assignments.

Sources familiar with External Affairs say the selection of Mrs. Mioritious to take the lead personally underscores the commitment of the department to conduct discussions with discretion, and the expectation that an agreement will be both comprehensive and realistic.

Civil Court to Accept Case Challenging Northwest State Water Allocation
The Gesgowy District Civil Court has accepted a legal challenge by the Admas Gvul Barley Producers Federation to Northwest State's water allocation in 2015 in the Trukntsung basin. Allocations were announced by the state Surface and Subterranian Water Resources Allocation Board last month, amid much consternation by grain growers in the Northwest borderlands. The suit claims that allocations sharply increase the flow of the Trukntsung available to Gesgowy and neighboring cities without regard for farm production in the region's townships. Attorneys for the Federation cite a 12% reduction in flow available to growers from 2014, which they claim has been arbitrary and unsubstantiated based on the reports that accompanied the allocation. If the argument is accepted in District Court, it may impinge on major industrial development plans in Gesgowy, leaving the city's Department of Development with little to show for those plans. The development plans include expansion of a refinery, allowing it to more than double it's output of marine and aviation fuel. Lawyers for the Board are reviewing the Federation's report. One attorney for the Board said "The barley farmers failed to use immense amounts of water during the drought years of the last decade, and we believe that the Trukntsung Basin compact requires more diligence from them before it can be heard to complain about uses in Gesgowy." Some courts have ruled earlier that grain irrigators could use more efficient irrigation methods without violating similar compacts.

Residents are banned from having pun after town council bans puns
Image
Main St. in Straight Edge

STRAIGHT EDGE, SPRESI - Today, a town of 1,200 people, Strait Edge has officially banned people from having any pun at all due to complaints from tourists complaining about how often people have a lot of pun due to the bad puns that are said to be the worst in the world, if not within South Velkia.

Mayor Hayt Spuns has explained that "many people have been complaining about the puns that we, the residents of Straight Edge have generated. Some have complained that we're doing this to be edgy, but that was part of life here in Straight Edge. However, because of our reputation as a town where people make many bad puns, we are left with no choice but to improve the standard of living in our county by banning people from making puns."

Couple Hunter and Olive Green have opposed it, with Olive saying that "It will harm the economy. We have a long-running show about puns at the Straight Edge theater, which is basically just a play on words. We have more hedge pun managers than there are in all of the rest of Esquarium: combined. We married each other because of our adorable names: I mean, Hunter Green and Olive Green, they go great together, yes?"

Hunter nodded, and says that "we even have a gift shop where they sell hippos and zippos: one is really heavy, while the other is a little lighter. And yes, we also have a restaurant that serves Wookie stake, although it is a bit Chewie for our tastes, to be honest."

If one says a pun, they will be fined 5 lira for a first time offense, but if they are a habitual punster, they could be punished by being sentenced up to 1 year in prison. Literature that contains puns are no longer permitted, and all businesses that use them are to be shut down.

Hayt Spuns has said that "I hope that this will ensure that our county will no longer have to endure our own puns. We are sorry for having so much pun in the past: we promise not to do it again."

At press time, all of the inhabitants have been fined, and all the deciduous trees were being cut down due to how they were described as being the "most beautiful recycling plants" as a result of them recycling their nutrients.

LIBERALS BLOCK 2016 BUDGET
Government pushes for spending cuts continue despite fears of a recession

11 November 2015 Last updated 15:22 Geadish Standard Time
Finance minister Dag Loettervik presented the budget for the 2016 calendar year to the House of Representatives. However, the Liberals teamed up with the opposition parties in order to pass a motion that will delay the voting on the budget for another week, arguing that it required amending. As the budget has not been properly rejected, the Liberals' actions are not expected to trigger a snap election, as similar incidents in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2004 did not.

Three months earlier, Loettervik surprised observers by announcing they would postpone further spending cuts due to what he termed to be "uncertainty", which likely referred to fear of a worldwide recession. Economic data that was released two weeks ago confirmed that Geadland's economy had contracted in the third quarter, along with a further fall in wages, though unemployment remained stable. Loettervik warned his own MPs that "We could possibly wait another year for the worldwide economic outlook to improve - but do we really want to leave it that late? If we want our economic reforms to be implemented and to have enough positive effect before the next general election, now is the only time we can do it."

The government's budget proposal implements spending cuts with the intention of lowering the deficit to 1% of Geadland's GDP, mainly through cuts to spending on welfare, healthcare, law enforcement, agriculture and urban redevelopment projects. Despite Geadland's exit from NOSDO, which has raised fears that Geadland may be more vulnerable to foreign threats, the government has continued its cuts to military spending. The budget proposal also includes lowering the corporate, transaction and inheritance taxes, while raising the threshold for the former.

The newly-elected Liberal Party Kurt den Rude said that "Our party needs to take a stand against some of the right-wing excesses that this current government had indulged in. It is irresponsible to cut spending on this scale when the economy is in danger. We are not rejecting the budget. We believe that amendments and further debate are needed, which is why we're voting to delay the vote on the budget until next week." In response to a reporter asking him if his party were planning to bring the government down, Den Rude said that "We don't want to and we believe we can negotiate and find a solution on this issue."

Samuel Stefansen called the budget "unfair" and "an attack on our welfare state and poorest citizens." He said that the budget, combined with the Royal Bank of Geadland's decision to increase interest rates, showed that "the government is sticking to outdated financial policies at a time when a recession looks almost certain" and that "Geadland is in danger of sleepwalking into a crisis". He said that a snap election "would be the most preferable outcome" and added "personally, I think the Liberals will capitulate. So I challenge Mr Den Rude: if you mean business for your new party, stand your ground and don't let that budget pass until all your demands are met."

The days' events caused a drop in value of the guilder and the Bondhaven Stock Market index, due to increased fears of a government collapse. Bookmakers ViddPlus have raised the odds of the government collapsing before the end of its mandate from 6:1 to 4:1, while psephologist Johan-Peter Blumendal says that while a snap election is "unlikely", the Nordland government "is at its most precarious moment yet".

Analysis: What could happen to the government?
In June 2013, the Liberals signed a confidence and supply agreement with the Conservatives and Progressives. For the agreement to hold, the government must have a budget . This means that the government has until the new year to get the budget passed, or 11 December if they want to get it passed before the chamber's Christmas break.
  • Government negotiates with Liberals and agrees to moderate budget: The government will negotiate with the Liberals. It is even possible that the Conservatives have intentionally presented a budget that is more radical than what they intend to pass, anticipating that they will have to water it down to ensure its passage. The Hägen government used this tactic several times in the 2000s.
  • Government negotiates with other parties to pass budget: This is possible, but would be hard to do. The government would need support of 56 MPs in order to secure a majority. If they could obtain support from the Christian Democrats, New Alliance and Swedish Democrats, this number would be reduced to 8. They would most likely look for votes from the 12 independents that are crossbenchers (pro-government or neutral). The sheer difficulty of doing this makes it unlikely, and it would bring Efa Nordland two more drawbacks: the Liberals may retaliate by blocking some other legislation, and they may argue that the government would be breaking the 2013 agreement.
  • Government stands their ground and Liberals capitulate: If the government refuses to agree to changes to the budget, there is the possibility. However, this is not likely to happen. The Liberals have already challenged Nordland and backing down from it would disappoint their supporters, many of whom have already accused them of being too friendly towards the Conservatives. It is possible that they would capitulate only if public opinion came out in opposition to their tactics, which isn't particularly likely given the government's approval ratings.
  • Government fails to secure supply and falls: Inevitably this would lead to a snap election. Out of the parties that could most likely cooperate with Efa Nordland in the future (the Christian Democrats, New Alliance and Swedish Democrats), all three have said they would not support a government without new elections. In any case, the Swedes would probably prefer to remain on the crossbenches than to support the government. New elections would almost certainly lead to left-wing victory, as the left have retained a large lead in the polls. With the Liberals suffering from historic low polling ratings (though Den Rude's arrival has boosted them slightly), an early election would not be in their interest.

GEADLAND REACTS TO SVENSSON'S VICTORY
Politicians send congratulations, others go further still

12 November 2015 Last updated 12:14 Geadish Standard Time
The election of Sera Svensson in Luziyca has largely been welcomed in Geadland. Opinion polling showed that 52% of voters believed that Svensson's victory was the preferable outcome, compared to 25% who would have preferred Breuvi Shjoraski to remain and 6%* would have preferred Paul Nickolovich, leader of the libertarian Social Credit Party, which unexpectedly rose to second place in the later stages of the campaign.

Efa Nordland phoned Sera Svensson to send congratulations, as well as posting on Twitter that "Congratulations to [Sera Svensson], for her victory in the Luziycan election. Geadland looks forward to working with you." Opposition leader Samuel Stefansen said that "it is great to see that the Luziycans have decisively voted for a more caring and progressive government." Former Prime Minister Edvard Johansen, who had a rocky relationship with Shjoraski's predecessors, asked "Who can hate Luziyca today?" Martin Hammerschöld, the leader of the Swedish People's Party and Commissioner of Leghel, said that "Us, the Swedes of Geadland, are especially delighted to have one of the most important countries in Esquarium elect a fellow Swede as their head of state."

Public opinion in Geadland has long been disappointed by the fact that Luziyca elected uncompromising right-wingers for six elections in a row since reunification. Shjoraski was actually more favourably received, due to his unexpected decision to seek détente with Namor, something which the public and government in Geadland have long desired. Back in 2011, voters stated that by an even wider 67%-14% margin they would have preferred a Liberal victory at the time. Efa Nordland sent a message to Shjoraski saying that "Our government has enjoyed working with you and your government and seen an era of improving relations and trade. In particular we commend the role you have taken to improve relations with Namor. I believe that in Geadland your presidency will be viewed favourably in hindsight."

Geadish media do not make endorsements in foreign elections, apart from The Liberal which despite its neoliberal philosophy endorsed Svensson. The editorial praised Shjoraski for his "truly commendable" move to seek better relations with Namor, before then saying that "32 years is surely too long for a party to rule" and that "A Sera Svensson presidency would be an opportunity to bring the rich closer to the poor, the Luziycans closer to the Namorese and Luziyca’s multiple ethnic groups and social classes closer together."

It has been reported that some rather tongue-in-cheek celebrations have been organised in several cities, including Bondhaven, Eskrau, Sofjastad and Arje. One organiser, who had put up banners and balloons on a street in Eskrau, said "We did something similar when William Bush died a few months ago!" Some were organised by Luziycan Geads. Others had no connection with Luziyca and just wnated to celebrate the defeat of the Whig Party, who have governed Geadland's neighbours for over 28 years.

*Percentages do not add up due to undecided respondents.

Qianrongs declare puns illegal, punishable by kicking
Image
Lingaas Tingatangataang was the first to be punished by the new anti-
pun laws enacted by Qianrong's rival governments. He is seen here being
kicked by a policeman. The footage was subsequently broadcast on
Qianrongese Television.
Xiangmen, Qianrong - As the Qianrongese archipelago enjoys its first moments of peace in months, the country's rival governments are trying to set aside their differences and focus on what's bugging them both. And today they did just that, both passing laws banning the use of puns in public and declaring such to be punishable by kicking.

The passage of the anti-pun laws were announced in a joint press conference between Qi Chien-Xuan, prime minister of the Qianrongese government in Yucheng, and Long Jiao-dan, leader of the Qianrongese government in Xiangmen.

"There are many things Long and I disagree on, like who is the legitimate government of Qianrong," said Prime Minister Qi. "Fortunately, Long and I were able to agree that if there's anything harming the security of this country more than anything else, it's puns. Puns are a legacy of Luziycan influence in Qianrong, and it's about time we assert our independent image by ridding ourselves of the threat posed by them."

Long Jiao-dan agreed. "The great revolutionary pioneer, Huang Jun-Tseng, unfortunately didn't realize the threat that is the play on words. But I am willing to work with Mrs. Qi in making sure that every Qianrongese, be they with us or against us, do not spout puns out of their mouths again. And I pledge with all my heart to punish all those who make puns to the full extent of the law."

In the areas governed by the Yucheng regime, officially known as the Second Independent State of Qianrong (SISQ), the "Law to Proscribe the Play of Words" was unanimously approved by the legislature and signed by the Prime Minister. In areas governed by the Xiangmen regime, also known as the Qianrongese Soviet Republic (QSR), the "Law to Eradicate the Bourgeois Practice of Puns" was also unanimously passed. In both Qianrongs, the anti-pun laws went into effect immediately.

Under these laws, the making of puns in public is punishable by kicking. When asked why kicking is the punishment for violating the anti-pun laws, Qi said "because that's what I do to my own kids when they make puns. As a woman, it pleases me to know that I have much of an ability to beat up pun-makers as do men. Times have changed."

Not so long after, Qianrongese living under both governments started feeling the effects of the anti-pun laws. 17 year-old Yucheng resident Lingaas Tingatangataang was sharing a joke with his friends when police showed up out of nowhere and started kicking him.

"It was a scary experience," Tingatangataang told the Pickle. "I was asking my buddies whether they Ngo Huu Tra'd to smoke pot. Before they could answer, ten muscular policemen came at me and started kicking me in the balls. It still hurts. In fact, I think they're about to fall off if they hadn't already. I'm never sharing my puns with my friends again."

60 year-old Pi Gu, who lives in QSR-controlled areas, was hospitalized after he was kicked and disfigured by secret police for saying "Long live the Qianrongese Soviet Republic." According to sources he is now being charged with insulting the Chairman.

Human interest: Interview with a Phazayazki defector
Image
Dimitry Sokolov

BANGSON, NORD NAKLON - It is common to witness amazing stories of defectors braving odds. There have been complaints over how many Yazk refugees have been streaming in from Phazayazk, but often, we overlook the ordinary Yazk refugee: and it is one of these refugees who we have decided to showcase today, with his consent, of his experience here in Shibdan, and how he got here from his homeland in Phazayazk to the little island of freedom. He arrived here in 2006, and married his wife (and beloved teacher among the native Shibdanese) Mrs. Yakolev in 2010.

Journalist: Greetings. We are honored to interview you today. First things first, what is your name, and what was your role back in Phazayazk?
Dimitri Sokolov: My name is Dimitri Sokolov. Back in Phazayazk, I was a steel mill worker.
Journalist: That is an interesting profession. So, what was your childhood like?
Sokolov: Well, I had a relatively typical childhood in Phazayazk, which meant that I was raised communally (by the whole community with a group of other children instead of with my parents, although I still knew/know them quite well) when I was very young, and later went to a Phazayazki-style school, which was not so much education as it was indoctrination into complete worship of the Orlovs and unconditional support for the Phazayazki government.
Journalist: Very interesting. I assume that they determined your entire career path?
Sokolov: Oh, yes, yes. According to the National Profession Test, taken by every Phazayazki citizen after they leave the required 4 years to service to the military (from age 16 to 20), I was best suited to being a steel mill worker.
Journalist: Oh. How did the test function?
Sokolov: The test includes questions for intelligence, as well as physical activity tests, although the role is largely predetermined based on Government observations of one's performance in school and the military. The test is extremely long, usually taking, on-and-off, around 2 weeks.
Jouranlist: So basically, the test was meaningless, I assume. What was your military service like, if we can backtrack a little?
Sokolov: Well, I served in the Army as a Border Guard across the border with Chorea, basically meaning that I had to be on guard 24/7 to monitor potential Chorean activities across the border. Luckily I wasn't an Emigration Guard, so I didn't have to shoot those that tried to escape to Chorea.
Journalist: That is fortunate. So anyways, what was life like when you became a steel mill worker?
Sokolov: I was lucky enough to still in the Commune where I was born and raised, although life did quite change, both with work obligations and more importantly with obligations to "commit yourself fully to the Great Workers' Socialist Revolution"; I was required to attend the weekly Party Conferences (which generally lasted the whole day), and participate in "Revolutionary Sessions", quite similar to what people called the Struggle Sessions in Green Fever-era Namor and 26th of July-era Katranjiev.
Jouranlist: Interesting to hear. So, what made you begin considering leaving for Shibdan?
Sokolov: I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but a man (who didn't live in my Commune and who I never saw again; I think he escaped from a Labour Camp and was trying to destroy the regime) somehow got a hold of secret and illegal anti-regime pamphlets (or as we call them in Yazk-majority Phazayazk, Samizdats). The pamphlets mentioned Shibdan as the closest free country for those living in Yazk areas (and Chorea for those living in Phazai areas) and how to create boats to escape to Shibdan, so I, and quite a few others who got a hold of the pamphlets, read them and began making plans for leaving to Shibdan.
Journalist: Interesting. Was it difficult?
Sokolov: Going to Shibdan? Yes, definitely.
Journalist: But what about the preparation?
Sokolov: I, like virtually all of those that escaped to Shibdan, lived along the coast, which meant that some others in the group were boatbuilders or fishers, and thus were able to bring or build a couple boats on the trip to Shibdan.
Journalist: I see. Did you have to convince the rest of your family?
Sokolov: Well, I showed them the pamphlets originally when some of them came into my possession, so that helped quite a bit. Nevertheless it was quite difficult at first convincing them to leave, earlier because of the propaganda the regime indoctrinates citizens with, and later because of the dangers involved in escaping.
Journalist: Indeed. I assume that if they chose to stay... they'd be arrested?
Sokolov: Not just arrested; sent to the Labour Camps, where they'd be beaten and tortured on a daily basis, and eventually worked to death. Everybody knows that there, as the Government uses it to discourage defectors. Although, to be fair, that's really the only prison system they use in Phazayazk.
Journalist: So, when you sailed to Shibdan, what were the greatest challenges?
Sokolov: Well nobody said sailing to Shibdan is easy, and that's very much true. Probably the biggest danger is having your boat capsize, but you also want to avoid the Navy, which immediately shoots down refugees if they see them, and really just having freshwater is a major concern when sailing to Shibdan.
Journalist: I see. How many people came with you on your boat?
Sokolov: I think there were around 20 people on my boat, although the boat was travelling with a couple other boats that, when combined with the boat I was travelling on, had about 60 people.
Journalist: So, what was your first sign that you reached freedom?
Sokolov: I remember seeing land, far away at first and not sure if I had reached Shibdan yet, but closer I could see a Shibdanese city (I think it was Aboyov) and even closer still a flag... a Shibdanese flag.
Journalist: It was pretty nice. So, when you reached Shibdan, what did you do next?
Sokolov: Well, I was luckily welcomed and received the standard integration to Yazks and all, and then I moved to Bangson. At first I tried to become a mill worker or something like that; at this time I knew how to perform two jobs, being a border guard or being a steel mill worker, but there aren't those types of jobs here, so eventually I worked in the fishing industry, since I knew a few things of that sort.
Journalist: What were the differences between Shibdan and your home country?
Sokolov: *chuckles* Oh, there are so many. Obviously the biggest difference is that Shibdan is a free country whilst Phazayazk obviously isn't, but definitely the massively different economic systems of Shibdan and Phazayazk are another major difference, which took more than quite a bit of adjusting to, whilst the economic structure is quite different, what with your major service industry and all, and of course the cultural differences; you guys speak different languages than we do, although in Bangson it's much more similar, your religion is far from the cult of personality practiced in Phazayazk, and you also raise your children quite differently than was done in Phazayazk.
Journalist: I see. So, did you have a hard time integrating into Shibdanese society?
Sokolov: Yes, very much so, yes. Phazayazk and Shibdan are just so different in almost every way, making integrating very hard.
Journalist: So, have you gotten married?
Sokolov: Yes, I married a few years back.
Journalist: If you don't mind me asking, who did you marry?
Sokolov: A beautiful fellow Yazk refugee named Anastasia Yakovlev.
Journalist: What a lovely lady. I knew about her as a community leader: if I recall correctly, she was a teacher on the reserves a few years ago?
Sokolov: That is correct.
Journalist: I assume you two had children together?
Sokolov: Yes, we do have children.
Journalist: Interesting to hear. After having spent several years here in Shibdan, would you want to help others come here?
Sokolov: I'd love to do so, yes, but I'm not sure how I really can.
Journalist: Very well. Thanks for the interview.
Sokolov: You are most welcome. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be interviewed.

"Nouvel Avenir" called opposition coalition formed today

Holère - Today on the 14th of November a big opposition coalition was founded for the first time in Fascesia. Although the parliament exists only feignedly, and is controlled by legally prescribed 51% of the UPC, the founder of the "new future" called coalition, Théophile Vigneron jun. sees himself as a representative of the people. The explained aim is the rise of the number of voters of the member parties, as well as the increase of the pressure on the government to the enlargement of reforms. Member parties are: the social-democratic PSD, the Christian-socialist SC, the green ECOSOC and the left-wing liberal PDR. Together all parties own 64 seats in the Conseil de Peuples. What at least makes up a little more than one third of the ruling UPC.
Image
File footage of Théophile Vigneron jun.

"After long time of rule from top to the bottom and the exploitation of the simple man something must change. Now the Fascesian people are ready to govern themselves!" This was only a small wording of the speech of Vigneron. Shortly after he came to speak about the exclusion of two left-wing parties, in particular the totalitarian-communist PST and the social-anarchistic TRAVAIL. "Both left-wing parties who have not entered the alliance are not mourned here. They were always an fringe group which, if nothing goes wrong very badly, always will remain a fringe group. As well as the split rightists."

"The expectations are turning me crazy", opines one of about 13'000 participants of the big rally on the Place de Fusiliers in Ystère. "It could become a bigger movement which again makes democratic changes in the system," forecasts politics analyst Prof. Dr. Maurice Maillot, "after the revolution in 1796, the 1st civil war, the proclamation of the republic and the 60ies riots a renewed social revolution would bring Fascesia closer to democratic standards."

The coalition must react fast and build up on her initial PR to effectively bring the voters on its side. Years ago the PSD had already accomplished great deeds, the overthrowing of the isolationistic government in 1967 and the pursuit of responsible government officials. Nevertheless, it only took over control briefly, because after the conclusion of all new contracts it initiated new elections, lost the majority and became a part of the opposition again. This happened because of the fear of change in the biggest part of the population, the change to social-democratic structures.

Vigneron was born in 1952 in the small small town of Gésses, close to Ritou. During the socialist riots in the 60ies his family got a hard blow to feel, his father was fatally wounded by security forces in the May-Shootings. At that time he received the motivation to change the system and his interest in socialism was awakened. A long time his father was his greatest paragon, also because he had actively taken part in the fight against the government. His father fired rounds on security forces from a window of his flat in 1962 with his old military weapon an HFNF mod. 39. Whether he ever killed somebody could not be proved.

At the age of 18 Vigneron jun. visited the university of Vendres and signed up in political science, national economy and anthropology. After only two years he became forcibly recruited, because the volunteer numbers hit an all-time low. After a one-year military service he returned to the university and studied four more years, until he spent several months in Soled. It pulled him to Vjaarland in 1978 where he fought for the FMBA. His "highlights" in this time were the production of bombs for the Brekkestad disco bombings, the decisive support of the assassination of Ansgar Lund and the anewed production of bombs, this time for the Strendhavn metro bombings.

In 1992 he became aware that he had to create order in his homeland, however, at that time the governing party in Fascesia dealt hard with open socialists. Again he travelled to Soled to marry his former partner and lived there until 1998. The situation in Fascesia had not particularly improved for the left until then. Therefore, he proceeded to Francilie for the next seven years and supported the Parti Travailliste. In 2005 he returned to Fascesia, however, not being active in national politics. However, he scented his chance to enter politics after the national revolution in 2010. Today, however, is his true comeback.

Will the coalition realise their goals, or must we reckon on other results? This lies completely in their (or even his) hands.

Namor declares support for invasion of Arnborg
President-General Fu approves of Ainin-led coalition, says it's "doing the right thing"

NAMO, CAPITAL DISTRICT - In light of the news that a multinational coalition led by Ainin has begun an invasion of Arnborg, President-General Fu said Namor supports the coalition's efforts at removing the country's government from power.

"Our allies in Ainin and elsewhere are doing the right thing," Fu told reporters in the Executive House press conference. "For successive decades, Arnborg has been ruled by an oppressive dictatorship that excludes a majority of its own citizens from the political process. It is one of the few states that has a racist policy in place, discriminating against the black majority and depriving them of their basic human rights. For years, the population has done everything it could to remove the regime from power, but to no avail. Now they're getting the push they desperately need. There's no reason why we shouldn't support that."

But the President-General also warned of "further challenges ahead."

"I just want to remind our friends that there's much more to do after this military action is complete," he said. "They will be responsible for helping the Arnborgese people rebuild their country so that it becomes the multiracial democracy they promised. All sectors of Arnborgese society reconcile with each other. If they fail to do this, there will be bad consequences down the road."

Fu said Namor is not joining the coalition due to its campaign coinciding with the Namorese election season and "a host of other reasons."

"For us, we've more urgent issues to address," he said.

While the major Namorese parties and presidential candidates voiced support for the removal of the Arnborgese regime, some questioned the effectiveness of an invasion.

Popular Front front-runner Tao James said he believes "there are better ways" to change the situation in Arnborg.

"As a non-interventionist, I look for better ways to end racism, suffering and totalitarianism than sending boots on the ground. Invasions are just one of the many methods of ridding the world of an injustice, but there are better ways. I'm not against the invasion [of Arnborg], but my skepticism for invasions as a means of deposing a government means I'm not for it, either."

On the other end of the aisle, New Democratic presidential front-runner Huan An praised the invasion, calling it "long overdue."

"Namorese are not very fond of military interventions, and certainly if Arnborg was committed to treating its people fairly I would oppose military action, but this has been going on for too long. Sanctions did not end the regime. It's time another means be considered."

Ainin and members of the Organization of Nautasian Unity launched an invasion, code-named "Operation Liberate Arnborg," which seeks to depose the government of Arnborg. The invasion was not known until recently, as the participants initially claimed they were holding an anti-terrorist exercise.

ATLANTIA CREEK SEMI-OPPOSES THE INVASION OF ARNBORG
By Rachel Stevens

LA PLAYA - Earlier today, we received word that Arnborg got invaded by Ainin. President Tascharido said, "Esquarium is supposed to be a land of place, not invading other nations." She continued, "I don't support dictatorships but having meetings to show our disapproval is much better than invading nations, but I'm glad that the invasion will end the racial tensions in Arnborg." she concluded with, "We have our own country to run and we won't be part of the coalition to rebuild Arnborg."

BREAKING NEWS: Arnborg Invaded by Coalition Led by Ainin

The Greater Ardokian Republic Condemns the Racist Apartheid State of Arnborg - But Questions the Necessity of Military Intervention

Sunday 15/11/2015 | Ardoki City, Greater Ardokian Republic

Image
Minister-President Keelin O'Hara of the Greater Ardokian Republic.

Reports are coming in about an ongoing invasion of the South-Western Esquarium state of Arnborg. Ainin, which is leading a coalition of member-states of the Organization of Nautaryan Unity launched a surprise attack on Arnborg under the guise of military training exercises. Strong opposition to Arnborg's system of apartheid and institutional white supremacy has been unanimous among all political parties in Ardoki and is deeply hated in the wider population.

But there is a sense of uneasiness about whether to support the military intervention, or to quietly express disapproval of the resort to violence (being careful to make clear a strong opposition to Arnborg). While the coalition's invasion will likely liberate Arnborg, and bring equality to all its citizens regardless of skin colour (white people are actually a minority in Arnborg, despite their instiutionalised dominance). Like any war, there will be civilian casualties. Thus the question on whether war is necessary must be asked.

Minister-President Keelin O'Hara released a statement to the press earlier today: "... The Government of the Greater Ardokian Republic condemns the racist and apartheid state of Arnborg to the utmost degree. I wish to make it clear that my government wants nothing less than the removal the present government of Arnborg, and the establishment of a new and inclusive government for all in that country. However we must express our concern about the current invasion, and the risks of killing and maiming civilians on all sides. We would have preferred a more diplomatic approach, with increased and ongoing sanctions until their government must give in to holding free and fair elections for all."

Some observers have labelled this a 'humanitarian intervention', noting it's humanitarian goal and warning against labelling it as an invasion or military intervention. However regardless of what you should call it, the intervention is only the beginning and will not be the hardest part. As you have probably guessed there is a lot of racism in Arnborg, within the people and also the institutions of state. There will be opposition and fear from the white minority, and perhaps resentment and feelings of vengeance from the black majority. It will be a challenge to transform the country into an inclusive and accepting nation, it could easily take generations to effectively combat division and hatred there. That is not even mentioning the massive wealth inequality in the country, with the black majority suffering very disproportionately from poverty and crime, which poses another stumbling block towards a free democracy.

It should be obvious that a peacekeeping mission will be necessary for years after the liberation, in order to ensure a peaceful and stable transition to a free and equal state. When questioned on whether the Ardokian Republican Army would be involved in peacekeeping if asked, she responded with "I think there will definitely have to be peacekeeping forces present in Arnborg, in order for there to be a smooth transition to democracy. As a member of the international community, Ardoki will fulfil its duty ensuring peace and human rights wherever it is needed."

This is an ongoing story and not many details are known at this moment. We will be sure to continuously update you on the developing situation.

The Liberal reports
GEADLAND: THE ANGRY, DISORGANISED FAR-LEFT
The radical left is gaining some support in Geadland, but their lack of organisation conceals this

14 November 2015 Last updated 11:22 Geadish Standard Time
DA HEGNER – Over 70,000 protestors assembled in Da Hegner last Saturday to attend four different protest rallies, with two protesting the government’s domestic agenda and two protesting their foreign policy. Gerd Ulriksen, a leader in the SDLP’s student wing who helped organise the March Against Austerity, had said prior that “We think this could be the biggest day of protest in Geadland since the Year 100 [1968].” It probably was not, as an anti-NOSDO protest in 2000 is thought to have attracted 100,000. It may, however, have been the most disorganised since 1968.

A march calling for Geadland to recognise and support the Lec Republic was held on the same day as a peace rally that called for the government to stay out of the conflict. Several protestors arrived late and had to march with the wrong protest group. Organisers anticipated a crowd of 40,000 but instead 70,000 turned up, far too many to fit into the assembly areas at the start and end of the marches, which took the traditional route down Den Linden Traie avenue. Though the marches were mostly peaceful, there were a few incidents including smashed windows and fights been demonstrators and the police.

Not all the protestors came from the left; the Support the Lec Republic March attracted some conservatives too, including former Progressive leader Jüte Rosengard. However, the events the day gave a curious snapshot of the state of left-wing politics in Geadland. They attracted a range of figures, from middle-class social liberals to avowed communists. The hard left, however, happened to be better represented than it was in previous anti-budget protests in 2013 and 2014. Most MPs from the Green and Socialist parties turned up, whereas less than 10% of the significantly larger SDLP are reported to have attended. Johanna Pirsen, a GRK reporter, said that “There were a lot of banners for hard left parties and causes. I swear they’re becoming more common with these anti-austerity protests year after year.”

Struggling together
The radical left in Geadland has always been diverse, ranging from the left faction of the SDLP to a plethora of far-left organisations outside of Parliament. They have always tended to be more visible in protests, public discourse and academia than it has been in elections, especially general elections, and thus in Parliament. This is partly because many radical left-wingers do not vote, while those who do often vote for the mainstream SDLP instead. It is also because they are usually more vocal, being especially eager to organise protests. The leftmost benches of the House of Representatives, where the Greens, Socialists and many like-minded SDLP backbenchers sit, have long been nicknamed “Loudmouth Corner” due to their zealous debating.

The movement also seems to be gaining support. Support for the Greens doubled in the June local elections. Non-parliamentary far-left parties such as the Red Party (successors to the defunct Communists) and the Anarchist Movement also have growing membership. The number of Geads who consider themselves “anti-capitalist” has increased from 8% to 12%. Opinion polling suggests that the cohort of members who have joined the SDLP since the 2013 election are noticeably more left-wing than those who were members of the party before then. The main exception to this trend is the drop in support for the Socialists; in the last two years they have been overshadowed by the Greens and the gaffes made by their leaders.

What is surprising is that the current conservative government is not making left-wing voters nostalgic about Manfred Hägen, who ran a moderate SDLP government from 1997 to 2008. In 2010, 82% of SDLP voters viewed Mr Hägen favourably. A poll last month found this had dropped to 57%. This cannot just be due to centrist voters deserting the party, as the SDLP’s poll ratings are higher now than they were five years ago. Rather, they reflect how many left-wingers have come to regard him as being a sellout. Since the Conservatives have moved to the centre under Efa Nordland, they argue that the SDLP are too similar to their adversaries. This sentiment benefits the radical left.

Ain't going nowhere just yet
The movement could also be on course to lose momentum. Many predicted that left-wingers fed up with Andras Verbåten’s government drift towards for hard-left parties; however the SDLP’s losses to them were limited in 2009 and 2013. Mid-term polls tend to give higher results for fringe parties than actual elections, due to anti-incumbent sentiment and undecided swing voters. But the left fringe lacks organisation. It is split between many parties of greatly differing ideologies. They are split between the Namorphiles and pacifists, activists and intellectuals, as well as between those who join the SDLP and those who join the many alternative left parties. These divisions prevent them from working together easily, and conceal their increased support.

For opposition leader Samuel Stefansen, who has himself sometimes targeted voters that are more left-wing than his party, this is a mixed-to-negative trend. If it benefits him, it would do so by increasing turnout among left-wing voters, and it is possible that if the electorate shifts to the left then the political scene will shift with it. The drawbacks are greater. If it becomes clear that the SDLP would need radical allies to form a government, they would risk losing the next election or, if they win it, being stuck with a disorderly government. Geadland’s SDLP should be hoping that the radical left remains as fragmented and directionless as it currently is.

Adlerberg elected Prime Minister after Socialists form coalition
United Workers’ Front excluded from government, enters confidence and supply agreement

STRENDHAVN -- Socialist Party leader Freja Adlerberg has been elected Prime Minister of Vjaarland after announcing the formation of a four party coalition between the Socialist Party, New Left, Green Alliance, and Liberal Party.

The announcement concludes nearly four weeks of Socialist-led government negotiations with Vjaarland’s center and center-left parties. Coalition talks commenced after last month’s elections resulted in an unexpected and sweeping victory for the Vjaarlandic left, precipitating the collapse of outgoing Prime Minister Harald Sjolgaard’s right-wing coalition.

Negotiations were slowed significantly by friction between the left-wing United Workers’ Front and centrist Liberal Party, together representing the two most polarized factions present at the talks. The United Workers were ultimately excluded from the final coalition due to what party leader Edvard Nyman described as “irreconcilable differences” with the Liberals, instead opting to support the incoming government through a confidence and supply agreement.

Adlerberg, whose election marks the first time that a woman has held the office of Prime Minister, celebrated the victory with other coalition leaders at a press conference Friday night, declaring a “new chapter in the course of Vjaarlandic history” and promising to “undo the disastrous policies of the past 16 months.”

The aftermath of the October election has attracted considerable attention from the international community, as opposition leaders campaigned on a collective vow to expel Nevanmaa from the Northern Sea Defense Organization. Nevanmaa's controversial human rights record and aggressive foreign policy in South Conitia has been the focus of a number of efforts to end the archipelago nation's membership, with detractors condemning the monarchist regime as a threat to regional stability. Adlerberg is expected to reverse the policy of the Sjolgaard government, whose veto has been the primary obstacle to a Nevan expulsion, as one of her first acts as Prime Minister.

Slave Demonstration in Palqtal
Protests over Alleged Mistreatment Prompts Discussion over Use of Contraceptives

In the snow-laced Wyengteng Plaza in Palqtal, more than a hundred fair ladies and refined men could be seen gathering around the bare willow tress today. While their attractive appearance and well-decorated clothes soon caught the attention of everyone in the city, it was not an ordinary convention under the early winter sun. Soon before noon, the blessing from the local Imperial Cult clergy before the shrine, the flock soon turned their attention towards the manor of the noble clan of Kurusu situated not too far from the public square. Armed with ceremonial pole and support from the local clergy, it was soon clear that they were to protest against the Kurusu family, which had been embroiled over alleged claims of their mistreatment of one of their slaves.

The majority of the protesters, according to the shrine personnel, are fellow slaves dedicated to sexual gratification of several of the larger local houses, including those from the Kurusu household as well, explaining their attractive and elegant outfit and appearance. At the same time, with guarantee from the Imperial Cult and fear from causing physical damage to them, neither the local law enforcement nor the Kurusu household guards were willing to engage them, making ways for them before the concerned manor as the nervous representative of the clan awaited.

The controversy started about ten days ago, when the local slave guild received one of their members from the Kurusu house who required medical attention to a strained ankle. As common injury of slaves dedicated to carnal pleasure tend to be either infection or strains closer to torso due to their required work, investigation soon began as both the clergy and the guild question both the injured slave and his owner, Nonpuhiko Kurusu. Despite initial reluctance, both parties soon began cooperating with the authority that ultimately revealed the incident that caused the injury, as well as the protest today.

The Kurusu household, despite being one of the larger clans in the city of Palqtal, was only a recent addition to the ruling class of the Empire, with its ascension occurred barely two hundred years ago. As such, it was still regarded as "neophyte" by the upper echelon of the Imperial social hierarchy, limiting its prestige and supply of individuals willing to serve their houses. Because of that, after the recent termination of contract between the household and several of its menial slaves, unsuccessful recruitment soon led to a shortage of domestic slaves essential to keep the manor in functional status. Nonpuhiko, the current patriarch, thus resorted to employing his remaining slaves - all of them pertaining to sexual gratification - for household works as well. For the most part, the patriarch honoured his obligation to reward the impromptu workers with additional payment and benefits, but he admitted that the injured slave was "better in bed than in kitchen", and he felt the need to reduce the payment accordingly.

While the tension was unrelated to the injury, and further investigation discovered no signs of further mistreatment, it was still deemed a breach of the contract between the household and the slave in question due to its failure to expand the service quality to works beyond providing carnal pleasure. The inability to provide medical care at time, as the clergy noted, also cast doubts on the Kurusu household's ability to provide acceptable living quality to its slaves. As such, a protest organised by the slave guild was approved, as a demonstration of the questionable management of the concerned clan. Naturally, other slave-owning clans in Palqtal were willing to cooperate with the guild and the shrine, allowing a leave for most of their slaves today to further boost the ranks. According to one of the older and larger houses supporting the protest, such reprimand was required to "teach the neophyte of the proper way of aristocracy".

The representative of Kurusu household, who was also the eldest son of Nonpuhiko, openly apologised to both the household slaves and their representing guild, stating that the family would provide proper care and compensation for such inappropriate behaviour. However, he continued to refuse commenting on the rumour that the household would transfer willing slaves to other local households to reduce the expense to sustain them.

The demonstration, however, also sparked a discussion between the guild and the owners regarding the increasingly common usage of contraceptives. As a recent invention to reduce unwanted pregnancy and increase sensation, it use was thus seldom included in most relevant slave contracts. Although unofficial inquiry suggest that use of casual contraceptives became increasingly common since the last two decades due to widespread availability, some slave guilds had been promoting its inclusion as a default statement for all future slaves where sexual interaction was to be expected. While sexually-transmitted disease was much rarer than a century ago due to the diligent works of the Imperial Cult and the government, many guild members agree that a wider use of physical barrier-based contraceptives will allow many of the isolated outbreak of infections to be eliminated, with the additional benefit of reduced cost in dealing with unwanted pregnancy despite the best effort for both parties involved.

GOVERNMENT REACTS TO INVASION OF ARNBORG
Nordland approves of invasion, but defends Geadland's decision not to take part.

15 November 2015 Last updated 15:22 Geadish Standard Time
When it was reported yesterday afternoon that an Ainin-led coalition had launched a surprise invasion of Arnborg, the government of Geadland has confirmed that they have not been taking part. Prime Minister Efa Nordland and her Minister of Defence, Micheil Boorten, spoke at a press conference, in which they discussed the events.
Geadland has long disliked the Åtskildhed government that exists in Arnborg. This government has denied suffrage to two-thirds of its citizens, discriminated based on race and suppressed political opposition. The intervention is welcome and justifiable, however we have not been able to join. We have still busy disentangling ourselves from NOSDO since our exit from the alliance in July, and in any case having too many countries with too many languages taking part might have been counter-productive. This is why we have not been able to participate in the initial invasion, though we do not rule out sending peacekeepers further down the road.

While she had said she supported the invasion, she admitted there was a risk that it could bring the wrong result:
The Åtskildhed regime has left Arnborg as a country with stark racial divisions and a lack of national identity. These problems may hamper attempts to establish a democratic state and are not going to go away overnight. There are many ways this could happen - Arnborg could face insurgencies or even a civil war, or new governments that fail to reconcile to country or govern well. All too often, we have seen oppressed peoples given hope and then watched it being dashed. We hope this doesn't happen to Arnborg, but this is a real risk.

Opposition leader Samuel Stefansen said that "While share the government's worries about the invasion giving the wrong result, we certainly support it. We'd really like to know why our government has opted not to take part, especially as both Luziyca and Namor are supporting it. Even after quitting NOSDO, it seems, the Nordland government is still afraid to stand up to Nevanmaa." While most parties have voiced support for it, it has been opposed by the Green Party and the New Alliance. The latter's leader, Georgus den Holm, said that "While the Åtskildhed regime was contemptible, we can't force a democracy on its citizens from above. It has to be built by its own citizens. That's why I'm concerned this whole enterprise will fail."

Elsewhere, Katarin Appelhorst, the Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs, has been mocked for a disastrous English-language interview with a reporter from the Luziycan broadcaster LRT. Appelhorst was caught off-guard by the reporter, appeared to have patchy knowledge of the events in Arnborg and made several errors when speaking in English. In particular, she said that "too many cooks spoil the brothel" instead of "too many cooks spoil the broth". Progressive Party leader Markus Matjassen defended her by saying that "She was ambushed by the reporter and had not yet been informed about what was going on."

Dolfradia reacts to Arnborgese invasion

Kälihäba- After an Ainin-led coaltion launched a suprise invasion on Arnborg, The Dolfradian government has stated that they will support the invasion , saying on their website:
The invasion is necessary for the peoples of Arnborg, cause the Åtskildhed dictatorship must come to an end. When it is over, there will be no more discrimination, denial of suffrage and suppression of civil freedoms on that island forever. However, we will not join the invasion due to financal and security reasons, and the fact that we are not to intervene on conflicts.

However it warned that risks will have to interfere with the rebuilding of the island
Attempts will be hampered by a host of problems, including the devastating legacy the Åtskildhed government has brought upon them. There must be a slower time where the Arnborgese must rebuild their faith and joy, A new government should be formed as soon as the people wanted it to be. Risks must be taken before all of these problems asre vanished.

Chief Minister Jakob Garlünd said that the invasion "is a perfect time" to begin reducing Nevanmaa's influence as a world power before he fears that Nevanlinna will reconcile & eventually ally itself with the Triumvirate and becomes hellbent on beginning a Third Great War.
Another Great War is bound to happen anytime soon. With the Triumvirate stalking on Nordanian nations, Nevanmaa's Lecistani puppets attempting to eliminate the LDR rebels, The Caphilate running amuck in Kraq, ethnic strife, worldwide recession & threats of war, this may certainly happen. But although Nevanmaa and West Cedarbrook has accepted Katranjiev's proposal of peace, Nevanlinna will use the offer as an excuse, i fear, to continue building it's empire and provoking major disasters (possibly referring to Nevan occupations of Lecistan & Costa Sud and the resulting instability)

-BREAKING- PAVONISTADE TAKES PART IN THE INVASION OF ARNBORG
President speaks on Pavonistadian involvement in Aininian-led efforts

Date: November 15, 2015

Aininian Prime Minister Marianne de Lotbinière declared in a press conference that an Aininian-led coalition has begun a surprise invasion of Arnborg, several days after the commencement of Exercise Arrogate Nibbler. Among the coalition, drawing many ONU countries as well as others such as Francilie and Scotia, is Pavonistade.

President Yksteldehs Oppenheim spoke in regards to what is now coded as Operation Liberate Arnborg (an anagram of Arrogate Nibbler), "Arnborg has maintained the backwards system of apartheid for decades. The process of creating a white-dominated nation has led to unneeded devastation against blacks and racial minorities. In spite of international condemnations and sanctions, Arnborg does not appear to accept the opportunity to reform itself".

"[...] It is no longer appropriate for countries to continue condoning Arnborgese apartheid. It is now the time to initiate change, even should that mean forcing it to happen". President Oppenheim also believed that Pavonistadian intervention and concealing the nature of Exercise Arrogate Nibbler was "justified and necessary".

The bicameral National Assembly of Ainin approved of "humanitarian intervention" in Arnborg. In the early stages of the invasion, military and government institutions such as the Arnborgese Ministry of Defense were targeted by bombings. A blockade and no-fly zone around Arnborg are also being enforced, authorizing entry to only coalition units. Prime Minister de Lotbinière warned that "[a]ny unauthorized vessel that enters the zone will be boarded and interned" and any unauthorized planes "will be terminated with extreme prejudice."

The Pavonistadian warship involved in the operation is PNS Lionheart, a Phoenix-class frigate which is expected to be among the warships to enforce the exclusion zone established around Arnborg.

Several leaders have voiced on the surprise invasion. Namorese President-General Fu Wen said "[o]ur allies in Ainin and elsewhere are doing the right thing". Ardokian Minister-President Keelin O'Hara "condemns the racist and apartheid state of Arnborg" but has concerns over the invasion and its consequences.

The invasion of Arnborg would be the first non-Ocelotian war that Pavonistade directly participated in many years. Currently President Oppenheim and possibly-relevant Minister of Defense Alain Colton could not be reached for further comments, although earlier they promised further details regarding Operation Liberate Arnborg.

Year to Date Retail Results Disappointing
Many Sectors Flag After Late Year Downturn

In business news, the Retail Sector Information Board today announced results for all components of the 2015 Year to Date retail trade in West Cedarbrook. Overall sales fell 1.6% for the period. Most market segments shared in the decline. Motor vehicles dropped 0.3%, Food and groceries by 1.6%, Fuel by 2.0%, Entertainment and restaurants by 1.3%, and Clothing by 0.6%. Electronics fell by13.7%, and Auto Parts and accessories dropped by 2.5%. Home furnishings bucked the trend, moving up by 0.6%. Other sales not elsewhere categorized were down 2.1%.

In making the announcement, Jeannete LaPau, Chairman of the Board cited rising unemployment in the last half of 2015 the year for the sales weakness. In the food sector, she cited the move of many consumers toward substitute goods, most notably away from meat and poultry and toward potatoes and cereal grains. Clothing segment weakness was attributed to relatively uncompetitive pricing among major outlets and online vendors. LaPau mentioned a relatively the 5.6% decline for for leading clothier Dawtie.ie this year, saying that the company suffered due to inroads in rurual and small town markets by more value-pricing competitors. La Pau also cited the long strike at Furd Motors as a contributor to weakness in the motor vehicle market, and added that the trend of consumers to retain their cars, trucks and SUV's had increased throughout the last half of the year in response to employment uncertainty among consumers.

General election on the horizon in Ocidenia

The entire country is actively anticipating the approaching day, when it once again will get a chance to democratically elect its own national leadership

Image

The National Provisional Assembly (NPA) has officially revealed the first update today on the planned general election in Ocidenia. The whole nation has been anticipating this day, as the NPA, despite doing a commendable job as Ocidenia’s interim government, remains to be a transitional administration and not the official elected authority of the country. Despite praising the NPA, the Ocidenian people have been waiting for the announcement of the day, when they get to elect their own government and actually have leadership chosen by them to run our country.

Today, the Chairman of the National Provisional Assembly of Ocidenia Adiro Pagressos, has officially confirmed that the election is scheduled for the end of the year and that the nation would have a new elected government by the beginning 2016. Although this information was vague and did not reveal too much specifics, Ocidenians accepted it as a real treat and for days, the country has been tossing this information left and right, as the media had generally been concentrating on this topic and debating the potential candidacies and campaigns, while the people themselves have been discussing the job that the NPA had been dong and whom they wish to see running their country in the future.

In public life, the NPA had actually been receiving comparisons to the recent administrations of Ocidenia. The pre-revolution government was called-out for worst corruption in the country’s history, although the people had still paid their respects to the fallen Prime Minister and other officials of that government, who had been killed during the coup staged by the CIA of Luziyca. Comparisons had even been made to the puppet Brozhav administration, as the nation of Ocidenia unanimously remembers it with disgust and not a single positive memory remains from the reign. Even the last supporters of Brozhav have shifted their opinion towards support for the overthrow of the Luziycan-backed dictatorship, as now-deceased Brozhav had revealed who he truly was to the world. Even today, with Brozhav no longer alive, some demonstrations had been taking place, where the people carried banners with the black and white portrait of Brozhav and with the words “good riddance” being spray-painted on them. Nevertheless, the post-civil war Ocidenia has remained calm as all internal turbulences had ended.

Meanwhile, with the NPA now having given the first official update on the anticipating election in Ocidenia, the nation continues sharing its’ views, as well as anticipating for the awaited day to come. Chairman Adiro Pagressos confirmed that the election will be taking place in a form of a pre-revolution model, with the nation electing the leading party in the country on the first day and then electing the Prime Minister out of the winning party on the second day. Ocidenia holds pride in this model and views it as a cultural value, as many country usually have the winning parties appoint the Prime Minister, while in Ocidenia, the nation has a say in everything.

In other news
  • Remainder of the Brozhav administration exiled out of Ocidenia.
  • NPA works to ensure job security across Ocidenia.
  • Comfortable conditions for free and fair elections under preparation.
  • Initiatives to re-open Ocidenia’s embassies abroad continue.

Gillenor to take police action in the conflict in Lecistan

It was announced in a conference this afternoon that Gillenor will be supporting it's West Cedarbrookese ally with military action in Lecistan. It has been speculated by many of the press recently that the current Gillenorian government, headed by an Oranje majority in the commons; is likely to take an interventionist approach to the civil war. The Gillenorian Prime Minister, Jonathan Westwick-Carlisle, stated in his conference that he had been in talks with West Cedarbrookese President, Isaac Feld, about how they could help.

The Ministry of Defence has stated that it will be sending upwards of 600 military police officers to maintain order in the Republic of Lecistan. Hopefully allowing West Cedarbrookese forces to focus more on the conflict with the Nevan military. The force itself will be sent via a detachment from the Royal Navy that is stationed nearby. After docking in port it is likely that the force will have four days of training on the culture of the local people in order to better police them.

Many critics of the Gillenorian civil government have argued that this is nothing less than veiled imperialism. The government hasn't bothered to answer this ridiculous attack on it. The Prime Minister of Gillenor has however stated that this action is not a provocation of Nevanmaa, merely an attempt to keep order in the state.
