Shooting in Oteki
Kovdor, Oteki, where the shooting occurred
GUSEV, OTEKI - Earlier this morning, at one am local time, a man, Feliks Oleg was shot and killed by a Namorese police officer whilst walking with his friend, Viktor Evgeni. The reasons as of yet are unclear, with various conflicting accounts by witnesses and the Kovdor Police Department.
"The officer was a Kannei, and he was staring at us," said Viktor. "It was late night, so he thought we were going to do something really wrong, so he called us over and wanted us to show our IDs. I showed mine, but Oleg refused. Then the officer said, 'Why the hell do you not want to show your ID?' and Oleg said, 'Because you can't make me. This is ridiculous.' They got into a quarrel, but Oleg was not doing anything. Then Oleg said 'You know what, f__k you, I'm off,' and tugged me by the shoulder telling me to leave the officer. The officer said, 'Hey, don't leave, it's not over yet.' When we refused he continued, 'Hey, don't leave, or else I'm going to shoot you dead!' And he did. Oleg wasn't doing anything. I'm shocked, how the hell did they shoot my friend like this?"
However, the police chief begged to differ: Kai Long stated that it occurred due to a physical clash. Other eyewitnesses gave contradictory accounts: a drunken witness said that Feliks was digging into his pockets as if he is looking for a weapon, and the sanitation worker saw him turn slowly and surrender, but when the back was turned, the police fired at him.
Such reports sparked outrage: an opinion poll shows that 72% of respondents believe that the shooting was racially motivated, 8% say it is not, and 21% are unsure. When news of the shooting broke out, protests have broken out in many cities, such as Bethlehem, Yerevan, Firenze, Jerusalem, Vesterhag, and even Kenyen, demanding justice and a "Namorese withdrawal."
For the Otekian expat community, the response is higher: 86% feel the shooting is racially motivated, 2% feel it is not, and the rest are uncertain.
Chief Executive Mikhail Shumev of the Otekian People's Association said, "We feel the pain of the relatives of Feliks Oleg, but we need to wait for further information before we judge this (the shooting) as racially motivated, or whether it is not. To say one way or the other is at this point of time is just pure speculation, because we do not have the full story about what occurred in Kovdor."
