Goverment

Postby Cydea » Wed Aug 22, 2012 6:05 pm

Goverment

Oligarchy, run by the members of the “Old Families”. Oligarchy itself is unelected, heredity, and has twelve different members of the Old Families sitting on board of the council. The council itself is known as the "Serene Council". The oligarchy has supreme power over the government, overseeing all decisions and putting new laws into effect regularly. Focused on benefiting themselves first, the people last. Economically dominant as a result of foreign business ventures paying them directly, uses an extensive system of patronage to keep those needed happy.

Each family has their own private militias (however, most of them only number 400-500 people. They function more as a large collection bodyguards then an army), and in order to settle duels in between families formal duels to the deaths are announced. These families own their own vast plantations, as well as their own mines. They effectively run the country in a feudal like manner. A complete list of the "Old Families" is below.

- d’Arbanville family
- Poulin family
- Soucy family
- Joubert family
- Cloutier family
- Lemaire family
- Plourde family
- Deniau family
- Desrosiers family
- Sauvageot family
- Dupont family
- Desroachers family

To address a member of the council, they do not call them by their first names. Rather, they must refer to them as "Sir d'Arbanville" or "Sir Dupont" in order to address a specific member of the council. Also, the members of the Old Families that do not sit on the Serene Council also wield an immense amount of power, often serving as leaders in the military or as members of the boards of various "CIG" businesses (explained later in the Economy section of the Factbook.)

The military is firmly in the Old Families pocket. Many of the militaries general’s are either members of or are related to the Old Families themselves, and as a result the loyalties run very deep. The military is what allows the old families to continue their reign over the country without much “talk-back” from the locals. Much of the army is made up of conscripts.

Aside from the council of the Old Familes, there is a small elected legislature. Consisting of 80 elected members of the population, this legislature has only been added to the government in the past two decades. The Old Familes regard this legislature as a nuisance. The legislature has little power, only allowed to voice their opinions on the Old Families decisions. They are constantly clambering for some sort of reform, but, the Old Families refuse to give them any sort of reform. The legislature, known as the “Elected Assembly” is more or less united.

Geography

Postby Cydea » Wed Aug 22, 2012 6:06 pm

Geography

It is a very hilly country, with over 2/3rds of the country being some sort of hill. Forests are also common on these hill-tops, with some 60-65% of the country being forested. The remaining 3rd of the country is swamps. The swamps themselves are freshwater swamps, leading out directly to the ocean to the north.

The hills of the country are resource rich, with much copper, nickel, coltan and colbat. However, the hills of the country are also infertile due to the tough soil of the hills.

Economy

Postby Cydea » Wed Aug 22, 2012 6:08 pm

Economy

The nation’s economy is located in several different sectors, listed below:

Mining: As many different mineral resources are in the country, mining is easily the biggest sector of the economy. Most of the population is employed by a mining company of some sort, as most of the major towns of the country are located near what was once or what currently is a mine.

Agriculture: In a close gap behind mining, agriculture is the second largest sector of the economy. Although most of the population engages in at least some sort of subsistence farming (as much of them are paid next to nothing for their wages in the mines), often potatoes and other easy to grow vegetables. The Old Families often own vast plantations, often growing grapes and tobacco on the steep hillsides of the country.

Consumer goods: Cigarettes are the largest consumer good produced and exported in Cydea, with the local “Rothman’s” brand of cigarettes owning a monopoly on cigarette production and export in the country. It remains the single largest export, aside from mineral resources, in the country. A few other consumner goods are made, but, on a largely insignificant scale.

Forestry: With nearly 65% of the country covered in forests, forestry makes up the third largest sector of the economy. Many wood products, such as furniture and general lumber come out of Cydea. It’s traditionally been a very small sector of the economy, with many people viewing working as a lumberjack as a “dirty” job as a result of past cultural stigmas against the natives that used to live in the forests.

Wine products: Although Cydeian wine isn’t world famous, it occupies a niche in the market for those wanting a cheaper yet still good-tasting wine that packs quite a punch. It’s a small market that’s unlikely to grow any-time soon, but, still remains a vital part of the economy for many. The company "Taste of Heaven" controls a complete monopoly on wine production and shipping within Cydeia.

Most of the population of the country live near poverty levels, with most people living on 5-8 dollars a day. However, the Old Families and their supporters have millions of dollars of wealth, plundered from the Cydeaian people.

Also, many big companies in Cydea such as "Rothman's Cigarettes", "Taste of Heaven", and several other "Old Family" owned companies are apart of the business conglomerate "Cydeaian Investment Group", which functions basically to unite all of the businesses operating inside of Cydea together to be under the direct control of the Old Family's to personally profit them. Several international businesses are affiliates with the CIG, which grants them near total control of their operations as long as the Old Families get their kickbacks.

Food

Most Cydeian food is comprised of potatoes, okra, and chicken. The potatoes almost always come mashed, the okra is always fried and the chicken is always breaded. Gravy is applied heavily and liberally on the meals. The Old Families typically have a much more varied diet, due to their wealth, but for the majority of the population it’s the “poc” (pronounced as “poke) of potatoes, okra and chicken.

Sports

Cydea is home to several regional mixed martial arts organizations, who often hosts tournaments on a regular basis. Cydea is known for staying "pure" to mixed martial arts, using a stripped down rule system that allows most strikes and submissions as well as limited referee involvement; similar to the early UFC events. It's wildly popular in Cydea amongst the entire population, with fans of individual fighters occasionally getting into fist-fights with fans of other's fighters at the tournament, similar to football hooliganism in other countries.

As a result of the love of mixed martial arts in the country, many people practice some sort of martial art in the country. The most common style for many people to practice is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, followed by Freestyle Wrestling, and then Kickboxing. Other styles are prevalent in the country, just not in a great degree.

The second most common sport is Rugby, with many club teams playing at a local level. It's nowhere near the level of popularity that mixed martial arts has reached in Cydea, and it's a well known joke that Rugby players hate MMA fighters and vice versa. There is national Rugby team in Cydea, however, many have proposed the idea to goverment and many suspect it will be a manner of time before a rugby team is formed in Cydea.

Education

Education in Cydea is primarily done through private tutors. The private tutors are hired by a group of families (or, in most of the Old Families cases and some of the wealthier families of Cydea) to educate their children from around the age of six to the age of eighteen. The private tutors often live in the home of one of the children or live nearby. Having the same teacher for such a long period of time brings out an intense bond between the tutor and the children, which help's promote learning. The tutors, after the children turn 18, can suggest which university for the students to attend too (if the parents can afford it). Their are several universities in Cydea, with one located in each major city.

In the universities, it takes a much more standard approach with class-times and professors rather than tutors.
