How does you nation enforce its laws?

Postby Mega-City » Fri Jul 27, 2012 8:44 pm

The idea of this thread is what is the mechanism for enforcing the law? What are your LEOs called and what are the branches?

My society has the Justice Department. It is over seen by the Chief Justice and The Council of Five

It is divided between five branches

Street Judges (special subdivision, Undercover Judges, also know as the Wally Squad)
Psi Division (special subdivision Exorcist Judges, Dream Police, and The Department of Magic)
Public Surveillance Unit
Special Judaical Squad
Tek Division

Each branch has a Department head Judge and below him or her are Sector Chief Judges. Below him or her are the rank and file with Senior Judges handling the role of Sergeants.

The Diaspora Church of the Eternal Kawaii maintains harmony among our people through the Happiness Police. They are a dedicated troop of young, unmarried females devoted to upholding our religious laws and enforcing public manners and decorum. They're easily recognized by their brightly colored seifuku ("sailor suit"-style school uniforms) and the large wooden ceremonial mallets they carry.

The Canton of Justice
Mistborn-designed to eliminate Nobles who become too dangerous. Usually serve as private assassins for powerful Great House Lords.
House Guardsmen-Each House has it's own armies that protect their cities and protect their keeps.
The Buoyant Armigers-Are the elite honor guard for Great Houses, and designed to protect the House Lords at all costs.
City Watch-Lowest of the low and only keep tabs on the Skaa. Made up of Skaa themselves, but, still treated as expendable garbage by the Nobility. Notoriously corrupt as well.

The Steel Ministry
Steel Inquisitors-elite super soldiers under direct control by the Steel ministry, and only obey the Emperor and The Head Inquisitor. They are rarely seen, but, are sent only after heretics and dangerous Noblemen.
Obligator's-serve as the eyes and ears for the Steel ministry. Focused on keeping tabs on the Nobility

If a Skaa broke the law, the City Watch would if the crime were reported send guardsmen out to punish the offender, usually by means of torture and depending upon the severity death. The City Watch mainly only care for smuggling and big time offenders. As such crime is very high within the cities. the City Watch themselves have very little power and can only punish Skaa.

If a Nobleman murders someone, an Obiligator would dispatch a group of Guardsmen to arrest the offender. They are then tortured until a confession is made. If guilty they are put to death via meat hook in Public. Though that said, Obligators can be bribed, and members of the Nobility, and even powerful criminal Skaa can escape justice by bribes. Though if caught, the offenders are killed on sight.

A Noblemen that is preaching the overthrow of the Empire, and speaking heresy is dealt with by a visit from the Steel Inquisition. The end result is messy to say the least. Steel Inquisitors are known for their cruelty. It works the same for Skaa.

If a Lord of a Noblehouse began plotting the destruction of a rival house or became too powerful a rival lord may request the services of a Mistborn to prevent a House War. To do so an obiligator must be present, and the agent and lord as well. A writ will be signed in blood, and the target will be killed once the writ is approved. Mistborn rarely fail.

Well, the law enforcement still works, generally involving the following methods:

- Cracking down on stuff
- Encouraging consumerism

Through many agencies:

-HRP (Holy Republic Police)
Which are divided into sub-agencies:
-HRP-SWAT (Holy Republic Police-Special Weapons and Tactics)
-HRP-HRA SAF (Holy Republic Police-Holy Republic Army Special Actions Force)

The Holy Republic Army is limited in enforcing the law and only enforces the law on the nations' borders and costlines (A.K.A Military Conflict and War)

The City Vigilantes of Froggy City, a branch of the Froggy Development Authority is a praised scheme by many other cities and municipalites which it is a police force dedicated to enforcing neighborhood laws and ordinances. Other cities and municipalities plan to have their own City Vigilantes on the future.

The Civilian Police Force operates to enforce the law among civilians and assist civilians during peacetime.
The Military Police Force operates to enforce the law among military personnel and assist military personnel during wartime.

In Ur-Alhazred, laws are literally enforced, by the Adeptus Arbites, who are both judge and jury, maintaining the common law and patrolling the streets. Before the Exodus, Arbiters had a bad reputation for being morally corrupt, a reputation that still tarnishes their authority. However, they are nowadays virtually free from the worst excesses, as much as any human organisation can be, thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Imperial Inquisition, which holds absolute authority over everyone and everything when it comes to their mandate; to root out the Heretic, the Witch and the Xenos. The Inquisition, unlike the Arbiters, intentionally cultivate their fearsome reputation; their duty lies with Ur-Alhazred as a whole, which makes the occasional collateral damage an acceptable price for the continued survival of their little corner of the Imperium.

The Adeptus Mechanicus also bears mention, for it is at once part of yet separate from the rest of the Imperium. The nature of the Machine Cult makes most mundane crimes rare, with the perpetrators being punished according to their usefulness to the cult at large and the seriousness of their crime. However, the Tech-Priests also have their own particular form of crime; Techo-Heresy. Magi who dedicate themselves to tracking and disposing of Hereteks are known by the title of Secutor, and their retinues - in what many believe to be a rare display of humour, even as the Magi claim that the word comes "from an ancient order of Machine Cultists" - as Trouble-Shooters. As a whole, the "police" of the Adeptus Mechanicus are referred to as the Impure Tech Service, or simply the IT Service.

The Justice Department or Justice Council consists of judges and lawyers selected by political Trustmen( veteran politicians with high sincerness). The MicroJust Departments are regional overseers with laws adaptive to a specific region (most are unitary, but states like Jafseera have many shaira courts which are part of MicroJust).
The whole country must answer to the National Justice Department, who also control Police and Security.

We make use of both the military and the secret police. Our police "cars" are actually lightweight, compact 2 person IFVs armed with a high calibre chain gun, and is equipped with a spotlight for night time patrols and raids. Car chases usually don't occur much, since the target often ends up getting torn apart by the rounds fired at it.

In Nordengrund, the soldiers are also the law enforcers. The soldiers who enforce the law are a part of a branch known as the Federal Police Force. They are administrated by the general. During the day, they wear blue uniforms. They have helmets with visors, blue shirts, blue trousers, bullet- proof vests, steel- toed boots, and gloves. Their uniform is the same at night except the color is black and they have night vision goggles at night. They carry Republic Pistols Mark 7, and FPF Rifles.

Quite simply it depends on the crime. If for instance a starving boy steals an apple, he is caught by the local Provincial Constabulary, convicted by a Provincial Court (via judge and jury), and then given however many years of hard labor is recommended by the judge. If however the person in question is suspected of holding Marxist or anti-Catholic opinions, he is caught by His Majesty's Special Service, the Office of Heretical Inquisition, or Bureau of Investigations, taken before an Imperial Tribunal, convicted, and terminated.
Dammed Marxists running about buggering sheep, and other such mischief. We really must do something about that.

Laws are enforced by the central state police agency, the Anglish People's Militia (APM). Militiamen are easily recognisable through their traditional rifle green uniforms and hi-vis equipment and protective vests. APM personnel are not routinely armed, except with a baton and CS gas spray.

All convicts are processed by the local branch of the People's Central Court Service, and their sentence is deliberated on the severity of their crime - ranging from community service or having to continue working on minimum state benefit, or lifetime imprisonment.
