In the late 19th century, there was fierce debate over what should be Stormaen's national animal: the European robin (Erithacus rubecula) and the European wild boar (Sus scrofa). The two sides were called the "birds and boars" (also sometimes mockingly called the "twits and swines").

The "birds" (or "twits") supported the robin because it is fiercely defends itself and its territory, is small and agile, can see out the worst winters and because of its a majestic red chest, similar to the Red Duster (locally called the "Union Flag") of Stormaen. They opposed the wild boar because, in their eyes, it was dirty and lacked dignity.

The "boars" (or "swines") supported the wild boar because it was strong, resourceful, fiercely independent and very defensive over its home. They opposed the robin because it was small, weaker compared to bigger animals and lacked uniqueness.

Ultimately, public opinion favoured the robin. However, special mention was made of the wild boar and it's considered Stormaen's second national animal.
