The punishment for desertion varies, based on the circumstances. In all cases so far, the deserter was found to have significant psychological issues, and received treatment.

The Atlantis Constitution proscribes exile to a gateless planet as the punishment for defection or treason. However, the Constitution also allows the Council to terminate "individuals who, through their actions, have demonstrated that they are a threat to the safety and security of the people of Atlantis". So far, all known defectors and traitors (of which we have had very few) have been terminated under Council authority.

If you desert, the military gives you a fine, a large one must I add. Then you are thrown out of the military and are unable to apply for jobs in the government.
Your grade in the military is revoked and if you have taken a degree in the military, that is also revoked.

If you defect however, you will face jailtime and revoking of your passport. You are unable to travel outside he country during the wartime and for 2 years after the war. If you are high up in the military and have knowledge of things that could be a danger if our enemies knew it, you would face life imprisonment. We can not risk letting our secrets out to our enemies.

CANON UPDATE (OOC):
I have given this a lot of thought and I have decided to do some major changes to the Walosian History Canon.

The largest change that I will be doing is the removal of the “Walosian-Khelsharian War of 2009” and the following abdication of Empress Liat as well as the removal of the character Liat completely. The reason why is because I have developed my nation into a more realistic fashion during the 2014-2015 era and after reviewing older post I see that the war and abdication of Liat is both unrealistic, doesn’t fit with the overall nation and is simply unprofessional.

Deserters are court-martialled and forced to serve a prison term, after which they shall be dishonourably discharged, losing most of their soldier's benefits. However, they are allowed to re-enlist, and if they serve well in their next service term, they can be re-classified to an honourable discharge and their desertion overlooked.

Defection is viewed as treason, and defectors would be summarily executed should sufficient evidence be present.

Officially it is imprisonment, but this is barely, if ever, enforced. Usually a discharge and a fine of 100,000 USD.

The Revolutionary People's Army of Rustonia punishes desertion by assigning the captured deserter to a penal unit until such a time as hostilities are declared over. Defection, assuming it means defection to the enemy, is punished by execution via firing squad.

We are not a medieval nation, so we have no army. And desertion/defection is not really a problem this way.

Provided a Sidh would even have the mind to desert, he'd certainly be put to death as a coward and traitor when caught, since banishment is not an option on embattled worlds. Most likely through some very slow, agonizing and degrading means befitting for a coward, deserter and traitor. But since serving the Imperium at arms is considered a privilege and honour, and death on the battlefield glorious, military service bringing various privileges, such as full citizenship, I don't see why a true Sidh would even want to desert in the first place.

Since conventionally punishing a defector is impossible for obvious reasons, prominent defectors are marked for termination and a Judicator kill team is dispatched to "judicate" them, which usually involves a very messy and gruesome death to serve as a warning for would-be future defectors. Rank-and-file Sidhae who defect are rarely judicated though, having no information or knowledge of value to need preventing from falling in enemy hands, although then again, enemies are also less likely to accept the defection of these Sidhae and just take them prisoner and hand them over to their kind to be dealt with on the next prisoner exchange.

Defection is rare but not non-existent. Most often, it's scientists and other intellectual types, not soldiers who defect, usually out of political disaffection, their minds being poisoned by the filthy and degenerate alien ideas of liberalism and the likes. Officers and their charges sometimes defect when they feel disgruntled with the Imperial military, such as when they feel their sacrifices have been in vain, squandered by incompetent command, or out of simple greed, the promise of financial wealth being more appealing to them than the promise of fame and glory.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

If you desert the military, you will be fined for the price it costs to keep you in it.

If you defect, well, lets just say the SCP foundation is always looking for more "volunteers" and you just became there prime candidate.

If a soldier deserts, his immediate superior will be penalised by a fine 1 pound sterling per day for every day until the deserter returns, or when the deserter's tour/commission ends, whichever is sooner.

If a soldier defects, his property real and movable will be forfeited to the crown, on top of the fine imposed on the officer.

Absolutely nothing. If one of our soldiers wishes to leave the army, the only thing that will happen is that he will no longer be paid.

If you desert, but not defect, we aren't too harsh. We'll throw you in an isolation cell for a few days. After which, we'd usually analyze your psychological well-being, to see if the desertion was brought on by stress or other problems. If it was, we may assign the soldier to conditions that would suit him or her better, so they would be less likely to desert again. If not, we return them to their unit, and usually order a watch on them. If they desert again, we'll just keep giving them isocell time, perhaps even torture them a bit as corporal punishment. We're harsh to enemies, not our own men and women if it can be helped.

If they defect...they can expect a magnetically-accelerated 2mm round through their skull. Though, if we got their hands on them, the punishment would be much, much worse. Traitors are not tolerated.

For desertion: the usual punishment is 3 years of imprisonment or 6 years of public service. If the deserter seems to be suffering PTSD and are legitimately unfit for battle, they will be honorably discharged and sent to therapy.
For defection: Life prison sentance

Our armed forces are all volunteer, all the time. If you want to go home, go. There are dozens waiting in line to take your place. Since they're trying so hard to get in, we see little reason to prevent you from getting out.

The closest thing we have to "punishment" is that you'll have an even harder time getting back in if you change your mind.

This, but there's also some social pressure on deserters; people of the opposite gender tend to not see them sexually attractive anymore and they might have a hard time finding a job if their desertion is made public (which happens sooner or later, as authorities leak some information to media on a regular basis)

That's true here too. It isn't good to be thought of as a quitter in either work relationships or personal relationships.
