For a deserter:
-Court martial
-6 months in a military prison
-Their service time accumulated toward the mandatory 4 years is cut in half
-Repeat offenders (3 cases) are dishonorably discharged and treated as though they never served at all. As a result their voting rights are revoked and they cannot access the public healthcare, education, or welfare systems. Their dependents and spouses are still allowed to make full use of public programs, and the spouse retains their voting rights. At the age of 35 the repeat deserter may apply for 4 years of community service in order to regain access to public programs and their voting rights.

For a defector:
-A defector is given their choice to either die by firing squad, hanging, gas chamber, or electric chair.
A social democracy following a variant of the Nordic model of the European welfare state composed of a union of Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Greenland, Denmark, Sleswig-Holstein, and a bit of Estonia.

I should also clarify that death is a rarely used punishment for desertion, used rarely to set an example to other, would-be deserters.

Now, one noteworthy exception to this general policy is deserters in the middle of combat. These may be shot down on the spot by the nearest officer, or NCO to keep the lines stable.

Execution by firing squad is the traditional, and usual, punishment for any soldier attempting to permanently desert the military. Being absent without leave carries less harsh penalties, depending upon the circumstances, but generally involves the withholding of wages or some sort of privilege, though can be punished with incarceration in one of the nations military prisons.

The punishment for desertion varies with the circumstances of the crime. During peacetime, the worst penalty for desertion would be loss of pay and rank, imprisonment, and dishonorable discharge. During wartime, that's likely to be the lightest sentence a deserter can get; flight from the battlefield during a critical operation will probably result in execution by firing squad. Since our Expeditionary Forces, Air Forces, and Navy are all-volunteer, professional forces, desertion is rarely a problem.

Defection is treason, and the penalties range from imprisonment to execution.

The punishment is determined on a case-by-case basis. For desertion, the minimum penalty is a dismissal of all charges (this is only if the orders given were exceptionally idiotic and likely to get the soldier killed for no tactical or strategic advantage) and the maximum is five years hard labor (ironically, they are usually put to work in a war zone). For defection, it again depends on the circumstances. For example, if the soldier believed that he would be saving lives by doing so, the charges are generally dismissed. However if they are attempting to pass information onto the enemies, they can be stripped of citizenship and their medical and economic rights and privileges.

A deserter will be kicked out the armed and jailed for up to 5 years. A defector will be treated like an enemy soldier.

For both crimes the offending soldier will stand trial at Military Court. Desertion usually means a fine of roughly US$100 and demotion, for defection the norm is a fine of about US$1000, dishonorable discharge and being imprisoned for 2-10 years. However, with defection especially, it depends on the scenario and level.

It varies.

The official punishment is a light flogging but not many commanders use this anymore. The army often look into the reasons for desertion if it is out of folly or simple laziness soldiers are given 5-11 strokes with a hard cane.
If it is out of a medical problem the deserter is sent for psychiatric evaluation and is then sent back to the front when in better health . In peacetime the punishment is usually a short prison sentence and 3 months without pay. However in Total war when Mackonia is fighting for its life the death penalty is often used .

A case that has recently came into light in Mackonia happened when a highly overzealous officer had a young conscripts hand chopped off for desertion.

During times of peace there is no standing armed forces.
During times of war deserters are transferred into a paratrooper unit, with no training in parachuting, and dropped deep into enemy teritory with minimal supplies. If they survive and make it back they get sent back again. If they survive until the end of the war they are heavily fined for having not tried hard enough.
Defectors are treated as enenmy soldiers, and if caught are subject to human experimentation, generally resulting in their death.

Deserters are fined and imprisoned. Defectors on the other hand, now they get hung. And they dont get the long drop, they get the short drop.

In wartime so would the punishment be hanging while in peace time so would they be flogged and then kicked our of the army with a deserter tattoo tattooed on their forehead to forever mark them as cowards and scoundrels.

In peacetime, deserters are typically flogged, then dishonorably discharged. In wartime, deserters are usually imprisoned at hard labor for the duration of hostilities, then dishonorably discharged or hanged depending on their performance during their term of labor.

Defectors are officially supposed to be executed, but there have been a few cases where suspected defectors have been "accidentally" killed by the detaining MPs.

Desertion, let alone defection, is punishable by the death penalty due to security risks involved between the Tantalan Royal Military and that of our non-human nemeses. Why should we allow a Corporal well-trained in the self-defense fields to live on after committing a security breach? Our key military advantage is the galaxy's relative lack of information regarding our strategic programs which concern the unconventional forces...

Deserters & defectors will find it extremely difficult to assimilate into our neighboring enemies' cultures due to our very own history of inter-cultural hostility with our enemies. Thus, defecting from our armed forces will not only alienate the said soldier from us, but also prove futile as our Aurelian antitheses will not readily accept an inbound ex-TRM soldier due to their overall sense of distrust in us. Consequently, deserters/defectors are extremely rare due to the lack of non-belligerent powers willing to accept our highly-prized soldiers' "assistance."

It depends on the circumstances and, of course, which army the deserter/defector was in.

In wartime, desertion and defection are both punishable by death - we don't bother with execution; a shoot-on-sight order is issued.

In peacetime, desertion is punishable by imprisonment and "rehabilitation". If the latter fails, the deserter is released and a "desertion tax" is levied. Defection is always punishable by death, except that in peacetime it's a proper execution for them.

All of this information comes from the Army, i.e. the Dystaran Army. They can't speak for the numerous "civilian" (read: noble-controlled) fighting forces.

the punishment in both cases is death: the ObersterFuhrur has no use for spineless cowards.

the order from high command above all else is to fight to the last man and to die like a man. any personel in the armed forces who deserts with face execution by firing squad(which is considered dying like a coward) and their family with be outcasted and live with the shame of being related to a coward for generations.

Deserters have their name broadcasted so all may know the identity of the cowards, and placed on the List of Cowards; this translates to no company being willing to hire you, among various other negatives. The only way to get yourself removed is to serve a full tour in the military after your desertion.
Defectors are imprisoned for life, because defection is treason , or if they are a sufficiently powerful or important defector (such as a General or someone with access to valuable intelligence), they will be (quietly) eliminated.

The Valclusian Armed Forces consider desertion and defection two separate military crimes. Desertion is punishable by imprisonment, fines and a discharge from whichever branch of the military they serve in. Defection, with the intent of leaving one's own side for the enemy is punishable by death, for it is treason. If they are caught, they are given a military tribunal, where they are scentenced to whatever punishment the judge sees fit.

Desertion is punishable by corporal punishment and a very dishonorable discharge, with the risk of fines and imprisonment in a military complex.

Defection is considered High Treason and is therefore punishable by death.
