History

The Union-Class frigate is the United Citizens' Navy's longest-serving class of vessels, with over seven decades of continuous service. First fielded by the Federation Expeditionary Fleet in 3560, the Union-Class quickly proved itself to be a highly capable ship, able to perform both Search-And-Destroy missions as well as Deep Cover Assault operations. The original design, now known as the MK.I, had heavy armor, big guns and was capable of taking on ships several times its size. Consequently, it was produced in unheard of numbers, and by 3600 there were over 100 of the ships in service. Because it is so beloved by all who used it, the Union-Class has been updated and retrofitted with the latest technology to keep it competitive in the current military climate.

Despite the creation and adoption of the more advanced and more powerful Horizon-Class Heavy Frigate, the Union-Class remains a staple of almost every fleet in the Navy. The latest incarnation, the Mk.VII, has found a niche role in serving as a stealth ship, thanks to its run-cold engine mode and extesnvie suite of ECM systems. The upgraded armor and shielding allow the Mk.VII to take some heavy punishment, and the large number of rapid-fire weaponry means that it can deal a lot of pain as well. In addition, the Union-Class's high speeds and high manuverability have given rise to the nickname "Sparrow" among those who pilot it.

The Union-Class is expected to stay in service for at least another twenty years, with two further upgrades scheduled, the first of which (to be known as the MK.VIII) will begin in just a few years time.

History

More than any other class of vessel in the United Citizens' Navy, the Valhalla-Class has become the visual symbol of the might of the Federation. A massive ship in every sense, the Valhalla-Class has captured the imagination of civilians across the nation, and have come to represent all that is right with ship design. The current version is the MK.IV, which is really just a slightly upgraded MK.III, which is often called the most beloved ship in the Navy. Because it is a simple weapons upgrade, all MK.III ships are currently in the process of being updated to MK.IV status, and more than a three hundred of them have been constructed and deployed across every possible fleet. Build using the most advanced techniques available, and capable of being built with a wide variety of mission-specific equipment load-outs, the Valhalla-Class has become the workhouse ship of the Navy.

The MK.I and MK.II versions of the Valhalla-Class were both designed to deal with similar sized ships, and sacrificed defensive capabilities for a large number of lower-than-class-average guns. This allowed them to easily wipe out hostile ships up to a battlecruiser, and let them put up a good fight against other battleships. However, it was quickly discovered that the lack of defensive capabilities put the MK.I and MK.II versions as a significant disadvantage when facing heavy battleships or dreadnoughts. This led to the development of the MK.III, which reversed the design philosophy behind its two predecessors. The MK.III's armor and shields were both significantly improved, and an brand new AI-based Fire Control System was installed. Also unlike its predecessors, the MK.III gave up numerous guns in order to equip larger guns and more armor.

Most notably unique to the MK.III are the twin axial-mounted 100inch Linear Mass Accelerators which hurl 1,500-ton ferromagnetic-tungsten slug at close to 250,000 kilometers per second; a velocity that gives the slug the power to punch through shield and armor alike. These cannons are unique only to the Valhalla-Class, since their massive energy and space requirements make them impractical on any other smaller class of vessel, but are too small to be used effectively on dreadnoughts. A whole host of 50inch Linear Mass Accelerators, give the Valhalla-Class an extra boost of (omnidirectional) firepower, while the equipped antiship missiles allow the MK.III to engage speedier and smaller vessels.

The MK.IV upgrade makes only a few modifications to the MK.III platform. Most noticeably, the MK.IV upgrade gives the Valhalla-Class one meter more of armor, and reduces the number of missiles pods to make room for a brand new type of weapon, the Graviton Shear Cannon. These are weapons unlike any other ever developed by the Columbia Conglomerate. The GSC fires a stream of gravitons towards the target and then pulses them with dark energy, causing the gravitons to briefly excite and tear away from each other. This "shearing" effect causes millions of tiny gravitational anomalies to form within the molecular structure of the target, and when they collapse, the target's molecules are torn apart and destroyed. Outwardly, this appears as if the target is sliced to pieces before exploding. These weapons are powerful, but dangerous, since if they misfire, the resulting explosion can destroy a good part of a whole fleet.

Also of note in the MK.IV upgrade is the inclusion of a brand new reactor to compensate for the enormous draw of the GSCs, along with an officially designated DarkShock drive. Other upgrades include new weapon control systems, an improved automated virtual intelligence network, an expanded and improved sensor suite, and a state-of-the-art cyber combat system.

The MK.IV has been incredibly well received by all who have seen it in action, and it is expected to remain in service for at least a century.

History

The Horizon-Class Heavy Frigate was designed just twenty years ago in response to the Office Of Naval Coordination And Oversight's (ONCO) request for a frigate that could not only act as an effective replacement for the Union-Class, but also be able to fight independently and take on heavier classes of ships; two qualities that the willful-yet-outdated Union-Class lacks. Nowadays, the Horizon-Class is well regarded as a great improvement to the Union-Class, but despite its original purpose, the Horizon-Class has yet to replace its smaller cousin.

The Horizon-Class is also known as a member of the group of classes known as the "Almost Weren't" ships. Initial construction of the Horizon-Class was plagued by problems, most of which stemmed from attempting to fit so many guns into what was really not that large of a platform. In their attempts to do so, the Columbia Conglomerate pushed the project way over-budget, delayed deployment by decades, and ended up having to scrap numerous other intended add-ons to the ship in order to make room for the weaponry. Before ONCO could cancel the project, however, the Columbia Corporation managed to pump out ten of the ships, and following demonstrations, it was decided that despite the problems in construction, the ends were more than enough to justify the means.

Unlike the Union-Class, the Horizon-Class does not suffer from a lack of firepower; indeed, it is often said that it suffers from the exact opposite. It mounts 16, 20 and 25 inch Linear Accelerator Cannons, along with 18 missile pods; a number and class of guns that is usually only found on destroyers. Its armor is two inches thicker than the Union-Class's, and the shielding has been beefed-up to withstand even more punishment. The fire-control system and ECM suites have also been upgraded, and the class was the first class of any UCN vessel to be designed to be fully EMP resistant (a trait which is now standard among all vessels).

History

One of a small group of ships not manufactured and/or designed by the Columbia Conglomerate, the Corsair Class has, since its inception, been the odd-man-out between the two active duty destroyer classes. Designed by the Concord-based Harland-Nor Corporation, manufactured by the Davenport-based Hephaestus Heavy Construction Company and built using some Columbia Conglomerate parts, the Corsair Class has come to represent what happens when multiple corporations try to work together, but don't actually communicate with each other. The design and manufacturing process of the class was marred by inter-corporate disputes, numerous re-designs, and the possibility of having the entire process canceled entirely.

The Corsair Class's intended use was as a fast attack and escort destroyer; a ship designed to work in either a pack of similar ships, or along side much larger ships as an escort and guard. To this end, the Corsair Class was designed to be fast, agile and equipped with enough guns to sufficiently fill out its role as an attack and guarding vessel. However, when it came to actual construction, problems became apparent. Harland-Nor's initial design had no room for the guns they intended to stick on it, warranting a re-design. The second iteration was found to be too sluggish and too unwieldy, and the compromise third design is the one that eventually went into production. But this design had its own problems. With a unique engine configuration and odd, vertically-oriented body, the third design lacked enough room to mount more than three turrets. To solve this problem, two "shelves" were attached onto either side near the bow, and two turrets were bolted onto the top and underside of each one.

The end product was a bizarre looking ship that did its job, did it well, but had a "about to fall apart" feel to it, especially when the guns mounted on the shelves were firing (reports from crewmembers state that the ship feels like its going to vibrate apart). Harland-Nor has repeatedly reassured the Navy that there is no actual danger to the ship or its crew, and that an upcoming improvement to class will solve the vibration problem. Despite this and several other quirks and flaws, the Corsair Class has proven to be an effective ship that can pursue and destroy enemy vessels with ease, and also can effectively guard larger vessels against attack. Outclassed in performance by its larger, more heavily armed and more usually designed counterpart, the Helfield Class, the Corsair Class has come to be known more for its looks than anything else.

History

Though it was technically designed under the authority of the Columbia Conglomerate, the Federation-Class is officially registered as having been designed by the famous Karmarov Ship Design Company, which went out of business nearly a century ago. Head of the design project was the legendary ship designer himself, Viktor Karmarov, who was given the opportunity to design one last ship by the Federation government as a gift on his three-hundredth birthday. This worked out well, since it gave the UCN a chance to replace its aging and outdated Vauxhall-Class of Heavy Dreadnoughts, and also provided a good opportunity to show the government's benevolence towards loyal citizens such as Karmarov.

The Federation-Class is the single largest (in terms of length) and most powerful ship ever fielded by the UCN. At 6,010 meters in length, and equipped with weaponry and armor usually reserved for space-stations, the Federation-Class has come to represent the full industrial and military might of the Federation. Constructed at a classified location, alongside the Whiting-Class Supercarriers, the Federation-Class was designed to act as essentially a mobile battle-platform, capable of besieging planets and wiping out entire hostile fleets or even planetary defense platforms. And, with a construction cost in the tens of trillions of FSDs, every Federation-Class superdreadnought is a work of deadly art and a massive investment on behalf of the government.

Built using the most advanced materials and technologies available, the Federation-Class represents the best of military ship design, and incorporates a range of never-before-seen features. Most notably is the incorporation of three 200-inch Linear Mass Accelerator Cannons, which have previously only been equipped on space stations and planetary defense platforms. These massive guns fire their solid-tungsten slug with enough force to punch through an entire ship, and then do it again,. In testing, the guns were capable of punching through an amount of armor equivalent to three fully armored Union-Class vessels, and then destroy a large block of station-grade armor behind that.

Supplementing these main guns are twelve 125-inch LMACs and two-hundred 25 inch LMACs, along with a full fleet's-worth of missile racks. Notable among these are the "Orion" missile racks, which fire the devastating 104SS Heavy Missiles, which have been shown to be capable of destroying a battleship, and the Type 1BW "Black Hole" Missiles whose precise manner of effect and inner workings are, as of current, classified. The same goes for the two PP-X2H Dark-Infusion Particle Cannons, the technology behind which is still kept secret from the public. Additionally, the MK.III upgrade provides four Graviton Shear Cannons to the class's arsenal.

Its massive size, intimidating weapons payload and the overall mythos behind the Federation-Class have all given it status as "The most feared vessel in the entire UCN". Currently, a comprehensive upgrade package is on-track to be equipped on all fifteen Federation-Class ships, the details of which have not yet been released. Also, it is rumored that three more Federation-Class dreadnoughts are currently being construct.

History

The Helfield-Class was first designed near the end of the 6th Era Of Expansion, when ONCO put out a request for a destroyer that could supplement the somewhat 'odd' Corsair-Class. The request made it clear that the ship should be heavily armored, heavily armed, and capable of bringing cruiser-level amounts of firepower to the battlespace in a destroy-sized package. However, the contract also required that the ship be easy and relatively cheap to build. To achieve this, the Columbia Conglomerate took an Hauler-Class cargo freighter, gutted it, and turned the bulky cargo ship into a menacing war-machine.

The conversion process is incredibly easy, and is actually still the basis for all Helfield-Class Attack Destroyers. The ships can be constructed on a literal assembly line, with Hauler-Class freighters going in one end and Helfield-Class destroyers coming out the other side, with the entire process taking just a little over two months per ship. Conversion takes place in three steps: Step One is to strip the Hauler-Class of all civilian parts, and to refit the internal structure with stronger metals. Step Two replaces all the systems, including the engines, armor, and computer network. And Step Three was to install the guns, the ammo-stores, and the weapons control AI. Because of the ease and simplicity of its manufacturing process (and rumors that civilians could do their own refits of Hauler-Class ships), the common motto of the Helfield-Class became "In Three Easy Steps, You Too Can Have A Warship"

However, a consequence of this really easy conversion process is that the Helfield-Class lacks amenities of nearly any sort. The crew of 200, with the exception of the officers, all sleep in vertically stacked bunks, with no room beyond a small locker for personal effects, and no more privacy than the curtain that slides across their narrow berth can provide. Eating and recreation are both done in a cramped cafeteria, which was designed for just over 100 people, and not 200. The interior accommodations are sparse, and the floors and ceilings are bare and covered in pipes and electrical panels, while the floor is raw, exposed metal. Thanks to the enhanced guns, and built-up armor, the physical space available inside the ship is very limited, and everything is tight and cramped. However, the crews of Helfield-Class ships take pride in the hardships they endure aboard their own vessels, and claim that it makes them tougher and more adaptable than the crews of more 'refined' vessels.

Militarily, the Helfield-Class is essentially a flying gun. The Helfield-Class is equipped with enough guns to count it as a cruiser, and such a high armor-to-size ratio that, mathematically, it is more heavily armored than a battlecruiser. Because most of the guns are axially mounted, the Helfield-Class is best utilized in a sort of "firing line" method, where it is able to bring all of its guns to bear on a single target. The ship's only omnidirectional weapons are half of its 5-inch rapid fire linear accelerators (which are used mostly for missile interception), and the 6 missile pods, and as a result the Helfield-Class is vulnerable to fighters. They rely on their armor and powerful shields to protect themselves against much more nimble vessels. As such, the class has found itself put into a somewhat niche role, where numerous Helfield-Class vessels are lined up and used as "broadside cannons" against larger ships.

History

Smaller. Faster. Better. These are the words that ONCO used when they put in the request to the Columbia Conglomerate to design to build a replacement for the Valhalla-Class battleships. The request came as something of a surprise to many; the Valhalla-Class was a relatively young vessel (having been in service for only twenty years), and its modular design allowed for extensive retrofits that would cover any perceived weakness. However, ONCO insisted that at least three prototypes be built of whatever the Columbia Conglomerate came up with, and offered the company a massive sum of money to do it. Six years later, the first of the Shadow-Class battleships was unveiled to the public.

The Shadow-Class is, in nearly every way, superior to the Valhalla-Class. It is smaller, packs far more firepower, has much more advanced technology, and most notably it mounts the same experimental dark-infusion particle cannons as the Federation-Class dreadnought. Quad 50-inch accelerators and close to one-hundred turret mounted 25-inch accelerators give the Shadow-Class unrivaled capabilities against targets, while the dark-infusion particle cannons, PP-500 turret mounted particle cannons and large number of VL systems allow the vessel to engage the most heavily shielded or most distant of targets. To handle this diverse and complex range of weapon systems, the Shadow-Class is equipped with a never-before-seen AI known as the Special Integrated Resource InTelligence, or SPIRIT for short. SPIRIT is the UCN's first truly "smart" AI, and is capable of independent learning, self-improvement, and interacting with crew-members as if it was a living person. But aside from crew-interaction, SPIRIT also is capable of running all weapons systems simultaneously with superhuman speed and precision, including the Shadow-Classe's impressive electronic warfare suite, one of the most advanced in existence.

Defensively, the Shadow-Class once again eclipses the Valhalla-Class. Close to fifteen-feet of Nanocarbidium High Density Alloy, Sandwiched Between Two Layers Of High-Tensile Multipolymer Composite, stands between the inside of the ship and space, and the Shadow-Class also uses a scaled-down version of the shielding found on the Federation-Class superdreadnought. And while the shielding and armor are enough to keep out even the most powerful of shots, the Shadow-Class also futures a unique defensive mechanism against incoming fire. Two-hundred CK9R Dark Pulse Emitters are placed at regular intervals around the exterior of the vessel, each of the emitters containing a sphere of contained dark energy. When a projectile gets within fifty feet of the ship, the nearest emitters briefly expose the dark energy to space, causing a localized distortion of the dark matter in the surrounding space. This distortion spreads outwards, vaporizing regular matter within one-hundred feet or so of the emitter itself, including any incoming projectiles or missiles, and seriously weakening incoming lasers/plasma/particle beams shots.

All of these advanced technologies require vast amounts of electricity, and so the Shadow-Class mounts two different reactors which, when their outputs are combined, actually generate more energy than the Federation-Class's reactors do. These reactors allow for all the ship's systems to be active at the same time, a feat which would overload a normal reactor set-up. In the event of an emergency, both reactors can be "boosted" by feeding off of each other's energy feedback cycles; however, this process is dangerous and must be carefully controlled and monitored. Both reactors are also protected from overloads and shield surges by a complex network of Faraday cages, digital breakers, and a local AI that deals solely with the reactors and the engines to prevent overloads or overdraws.

To date only three Shadow-Class battleships have ever been publicly acknowledged; the Umbra, Penumbra, and Antumbra. All three are currently in service with the Advanced Operations Fleet, as part of the secretive Tier-1 special operations group the Special Tasks Group.

History

The Zephyr-Class is an oddity within the UCN, and has often been called "The Class Without A Home". Developed just ten years ago, the Zephyr-Class was ordered by ONCO in order to provide the UCN with a ship based around energy weapons, something that the Navy had previously rejected in favor of more traditional vessels. However, after studying other nation's navies during a thirty-year study, it was determined that energy weapons did hold certain advantages over kinetic weapons, and that the UCN's lack of ships with a primarily energy-weapon build was a situation that needed an immediate fix. The result was a ship that does not fit neatly into any one classification, but has also proven itself as a formidable vessel in any sort of situation.

The entire ship is built around the eight massive Dark Energy Particle Cannons that take up the majority of the bow of the vessel. These weapons are shrunk-down and modified versions of the much larger Dark-Infusion Particle Cannons found aboard the Federation-Class superdreadnought, and function in a similar but much more focused and stable manner. Alongside the Dark Energy Particle Cannons are the vessel's two Antimatter Kinetic Penetrator Launchers, one on each side of the main guns. These weapons are far more basic, but in many ways more devastating. The launchers fire a 50ft long poles made of tungsten and depleted uranium at a high percentage of the speed of light, each of them tipped with a high-yield antimatter warhead. The penetrators are designed to skewer a target and then detonate within the enemy ship or station for maximum damage. In addition, the penetrators can also be used for orbital bombardment. These two weapons are both supplemented by a large number of missiles and CIW systems.

Defensively, the Zephyr-Class is incredibly heavily armored for its size. It uses almost 4 meters of the same armor used aboard the Valhalla-Class Battleship, and is equipped with a significantly upgraded version of the shield used by the Helfield-Class Destroyer. The entire defensive network is controlled by a highly sophisticated combat control system known as SPIRIT (SPecial Integrated Resource InTelligence) that can coordinate every single weapon aboard the vessel at once, far more accurately and more quickly than any human ever could. This allows the Zephyr-Class to act as an anti-fighter platform to defend other larger or more poorly defended vessels.

Overall, the Zephyr-Class is well loved by those who have fought alongside one. They are capable of filling numerous combat roles, from support to full on assault, and their armor allows them to take as many hits as they can dish out. Currently, a MK.III upgrade is in progress that will give the Zephyr-Class more omni-directional firepower and brand new engines that will increase maneuverability

History

As is easily deduced from it's appearance, the Valiant-Class Battlecruise is essentially an up-armoured and more heavily armed Zephyr-Class Armoured Cruiser. Constructed side-by-side with its smaller cousin, the Valiant-Class represents a perfect bridge between the armoured cruiser and battleship classes. Just slightly larger than the Zephyr-Class, but with armament approaching that of a battleship's, the Valiant-Class has become a mainstay of the UCN and is often lauded for its combat abilities and overall durability. Big, heavily armored, and with a unique and almost delicate design, the Valiant-Class is both intimidating and aesthetically pleasing, and is generally considered the most "beautiful" vessel designed by the Columbia Conglomerate.

In order to enhance structural stability for such a thin ship, the eight 45-inch main guns of the Valiant-Class and it's smaller complement of 35-inch guns are all axially mounted, with the rest of the ship built around the gun's mechanics and firing systems. Though this limits the class's omnidirectional firepower, this is compensated for by it's unusually high levels of maneuverability, plus the large number of 12-inch rapid fire accelerators mounted in turrets all over the vessel and a large numbe rof missiles. An unusual feature of the guns are the Kinetic Energy Reclamation Dampers built in a ring around each barrel. When the guns are fired, the recoil and shock are transfered into a series of buffers that use it to generate energy to feed the gun's loading and firing systems. This allows the vessel to continue using its main guns even in the event of a power failure, a useful ability in combat.

From a defensive standpoint, the Valiant-Class is impressivly outfitted. 4 and a half meters of the same armor as the Valhalla-Class, a newly upgraded and somewhat experimental shield system, and the usual array of missile intercepts and particle repeaters give the class the ability to take as much as it can give. Like the guns, the shield is equipped with a system designed to absorb some of the energy it takes from incoming fire and direct in back into the shield generators, though this is much more tempermental. To make up for that, the class is (also uniquely) outfitted with many solar panels, both on 6 "wings" located near the stern, and on locations all over the hull. These actively absorb and store solar energy, which can then be used to power any section of the ship that needs it.

All in all, the Valiant-Class has proven itself to be one of the more formitable fighters in the UCN's arsenal, and is in use with every fleet of the navy. Most admirals use them as primary assault ships, holding back bigger vessels and letting the Valiant-Class do much of the damage before sending in the big guns to finish the enemy off. Like the Helfield-Class, which also has mostly axial-mounted firepower, the Valiant-Class can also be lined up like a multi-ship broadside to unleash a wall of projectiles against a single enemy or a whole fleet. And, like the Helfield-Class, the Valiant-Class has also found a niche role as a main go-to for orbital bombardment operations.

History
A new addition to the UCN, the Tarnkappe-Class has been the source of some contention amongst UCR military strategists. Introduced into the navy just twenty years ago, the Tarnkappe-Class goes against essentially everything the UCN is known for. It possesses no true offensive weapons; rather, it's entire arsenal is composed of light weapons and missiles designed to intercept enemy fighters, small craft, and incoming projectiles. Though officially referred to as a Fleet Defense Cruiser, most in the navy simply (and derivatively) call it a "cruiser without the cannons".

From an offensive point of view, the class has very little to offer. 15 and a unique set of 18.5 inch LMAs provide the vessel with the ability to lay down a large cloud of fire on enemy fighters and projectiles, while laser repeaters and missiles give the vessel extended-range interception abilities. Theoretically, the missiles are capable of offensive actions against enemy ships, but in order to maximize maneuverability, the warhead capacity of the missiles has been reduced. A unique feature aboard the class is the Swarm Missile system, originally found on the export-only Javelin-Class. After extensive testing and some minor design tweaks, the Swarm Missile system has now be added to the Tarnkappe-Class to provide it with enhanced anti-fighter capabilities.

Defensively, the Tarnkappe-Class is a shining star. Five meters of the Valhalla-Class's armor cover every square inch of the hull. The entire weapons loadout, dedicated to defense, allows the class to shield itself and the ships around it from incoming fighters or projectiles, while at the same time acting as a sort of defensive coordinator for the defense system of the rest of the fleet. Courtesy of six different computer cores and AI systems, the Tarnkappe-Class can be given control of other ship's defensive weaponry, and can then coordinate fleet-wide defensive actions. This not only improves defensive efficiency, but it frees of offensive-oriented ships to focus on fighting, not defending.

However, due to its unique purpose and high degree of complexity in construction, the Tarnkappe-Class has had some difficulty integrating into the UCN. Most commonly, a fleet is assigned ten or twenty of the vessels to provide for a total defensive shield around the fleet, at least in theory. In practice, many admirals will keep one or two of the vessels within the fleet, and scatter the rest around the outside of the fleet or around the flagship to try and stop enemy projectiles or fighters from even getting within sight of the fleet. Despite their awkward existence, the Tarnkappe-Class has proven to be highly effective acting as an anti-fighter and anti-projectile platform, and ONCO has pledged to continue upgrading and integrating the class into the UCN.
