The USSR could have just used other people's munitions, but developed its own. My nation is almost fifty times larger than the USSR was at its peak, so obviously we're not going to faff about with rounds developed by tiny backwaters like the USSR, USA, PRC, and so on ;)

One of my favorite tricks is to manufacture standardized ammunition that is ever so slightly (.1 mm or so) larger than "traditional" calibers like the 7.62 or 9mm rounds. For some models this doesn't make much of a difference, but for others (if I get lucky) it could mean in a war that captured ammunition is useless for the enemy since my rounds won't fit inside the barrels of their guns, while I can still use their munitions (albeit at reduced effectiveness) if I happen to come across them. As a general rule, Ardan ammunition is ever-so-slightly wider than most rounds we see on the market today. It's a big part of the reason why my government consistently refuses to export weaponry.
"I am the Elder King: Melkor, first and mightiest of the Valar, who was before the world, and made it. The shadow of my purpose lies upon Arda, and all that is in it bends slowly and surely to my will. But upon all whom you love my thought shall weigh as a cloud of Doom, and it shall bring them down into darkness and despair."

As BG said, why not? Its not as though actual ballistics are all that difficult to work with. A lot of people actually use historically rare or rejected rounds or one of the thousands of comercial or wildcat sporting rounds that are available. Many people are simply taking the opertunity to do away with what some consider to be the serious mistakes made in Western small arm ammunition selection since ww2.

My 6.25mm Round for example started life as the British experiemental 6.25x43mm round and got slightly modified throughout it's life.

The Principality generally uses any and all firearms-weaponry that is sold via their multi-national conglomerate known as HIA-Haruspex International Armaments. Unless of course there is a reason that a weapon should not of course be sold, generally this is in the area of prototypes and what not.

Description

The Wyvern mark I is the standard rifle of both the Grand Duchy of Maergau and the Empire of Great Maern; having been conceived before the peaceful devolution of the Maern Commonwealth into its constituent states.

The rifle is optimized for first-shot accuracy in semi-automatic mode with the capability for sustained, automatic fire. Maern tactical doctrine emphasizes marksmanship at distance and stealth over volume of firepower. The model shown features the basic weapon, including ambidextrous controls, integrated top-and-bottom mounting rails, flash suppressor, evergreen color scheme, transparent magazine, and additional compact telescopic sight.

Invitation
The Grand Duchy will shortly offer export weapons in multiple configurations of caliber and size.

Why should your nation consider the Wyvern?
The Wyvern may well be the first and only small arms platform designed to protect not just your nation, but also Mother Earth. Our first-rate designs, compromising no measures of effectiveness, are produced according to the principles of highest environmental sustainability and lowest impact on the ecosphere. Consider the following facts:

- The Wyvern is made with more recycled materials than any comparable assault rifle.
- Our steel is made from ore mined according to the extremely strict Belerian Protocols For Resource Extraction.
- The 6.5 x 39 mm cartridge utilizes the most advanced clean-burning propellant known to man. This means leads to less air pollution and healthier, more effective soldiers.
- We offer the sale of carbon credits with each unit of ammunition sold to qualifying customers. When trying to meet your cap-and-trade carbon limits, why not purchase the most effective way to protect your nation?

The world's first "green" assault rifle - can you afford not to have it?

Background to the Wyvern Mark I Assault Rifle

Antecedents: The PORW Program
The Wyvern Mark I assault rifle is descended from the defunct Personnel Optimized Ranged Weapon program instituted by the Maern Commonwealth in 1962. The idea at that time was to develop one cartridge that could serve admirably in three distinct roles - standard assault rifle, light machine gun, and S.U.M. (Small Unit Marskman). It was decided at the outset that the round would need to incorporate a high ballistic coefficient, for accuracy out to 500 meters, with good stopping power, all in a package that could be carried in reasonable quantities by troops in the field. Developers quickly realized that a full-powered "battle rifle" round, while providing excellent range and power, would be impractical due to both excessive recoil during automatic fire as well as the carrying capacity limits of front-line troops. After lengthy debates, the armaments engineers settled on the intermediate-caliber "Fafnir" cartridge based on experiences of marksmen in Belerian Cup Shooting League competitions.

6.44 x 42mm - A Lost Opportunity
The Fafnir proved ideal for the task. A 6.44 X 42 mm round, the Fafnir excelled in trials conducted with re-chambered Mark-144 rifles. Since the Mk-144 was hopelessly obsolete in other respects, offered only with a stripper-clip fed internal magazine and bolt action, the next task was to develop a new, modular platform for the newly developed cartridge. Several prototype assault rifles were made. Specifications included barrel length of 18 inches, three-way fire selection, 25-round ammunition capacity, and an overall weight of less than 4.5 kg. Other parameters were left intentionally unspecified, in an effort to urge creativity. By 1967, two competing designs emerged as clearly superior to others. The Steinmann v66.4 employed a locking, rotary bolt and a direct impingement gas system. It was a very accurate rifle, but performed in only mediocre fashion during field trial "torture tests." In contrast, the von Andau v67.2, built to looser manufacturing tolerances with a long-strike gas piston action, had extremely few jams and malfunctions. Near the completion of the trials, it was felt that the von Andau, though extremely reliable, was only "good" with respect to accuracy, and therefore did not take advantage of the best features of the Fafnir cartridge.

The Mark 148
Beginning in 1968, blueprints were drawn up for a production version of the new rifle, dubbed the Mark 148, based on the Steinmann design with minor improvements. The Commonwealth military had gone so far as to place an order for 110,000 units for use in several branches of the military. Due to political events (to be summarized below), however, only 500 Mk 148's ever ended up being built. Today, they are highly prized as target-shooting rifles or collectors' pieces. A few did end up seeing combat in "The Danona Salmonist Insurrection" of 1973, although no one in the Maern Commonwealth military will satisfactorily explain how that happened.

Politics ends the Mark 148 and Fafnir
Plans and procurements for new weapons systems based on the Fafnir cartridge were terminated with the formation of the Belerian Treaty Association in 1969. At the insistence of Dynanar, the alliance's wealthiest member nation, all cooperating nations agreed to use the Dynaran 5.32mm "ratkiller" cartridge as the foundation of small-arms standardization. Designed decades earlier, literally to kill Dynarian Great Rats and other pests common in the Dynarian inner cities, 5.32 was modernized by loading with more efficient, "hotter" powders and a more advanced design for the bullet itself.

The Era of the Ratkiller
Throughout the 1870's and early 1980s, various international conflicts exposed some of the shortcomings of the "ratkilller." In general, the 5.32 worked well enough and was cheap and easy for its Dynarian developers to manufacture. It did, however, suffer from poor internal ballistics performance when loaded with military-grade ball ammunition. According to the Maern military's tactical doctrine, the round was also underpowered for longer-ranged encounters that should, in theory, dominate both offensive and defensive actions. It was found wholely unsuitable for sniping applications, although it did excel as a CQB cartridge and as a good choice for local law enforcement. Nonetheless, the Maern Military's early misgivings about the ratkiller were confirmed during the 1st and 2nd Caimisellan Wars, the Forty Nights War of 1978, the Iragean Revolution, and the Crisis of Devolution

By 1995, growing dissatisfaction doomed 5.32 as the Maern general purpose cartridge - not dissatisfaction with the round itself, but with its Dynarian manufacturers. Increasingly incensed with Dynaran's reckless disregard for human rights and the environment, as well as Dynaran's reckless adventurism in foreign policy, the Maern government's ruling Green party tried, with increasingly heavy consequences, to dissociate Maern from Dynaran and the BTA as a whole.

Devolution of the Maern Commonwealth - A New Opportunity
Ultimately, the Maern-Dynaran feud exposed cleavages within the Maern commonwealth itself. Opposition Gaia Party members, covertly supported by Dynaran, agitated for a return to the conservative, religious values of prior times. Throughout the mid nineties, the Gaians caused numerous disruptions in Parliament and society as a whole, culminating in the failed coup attempt of 1996. The armies of Maern, Faorais, Dynaran, and Caimiselle all stood at high alert for weeks as the crisis came to its bitter end. Wishing to avoid both a shooting war with Dynaran and a civil war within the Maern Commonwealth itself, Parliament submitted the Act of Devolution to its citizens. Passing by a margin of 58% to 39%, this plebiscite led to the creation of three successor states. The Empire of Great Maern (Often called simply "Maern", the Grand Duchy of Maerngau ("Maerngau") and the Theocracy of Danona emerged to pursue their own ideals - so far, peacefully.

Separating on good terms, Maern and Maerngau established a treaty of military cooperation on June 20th, 1997. Rejecting all things Dynarian, a joint committee of experts from both states looked to develop its own alternative to 5.32 and its associated weapons platforms. Naturally, they turned to the earlier, indigenous 6.44 Fafnir for inspiration.

6.5 x 39mm
Development on a modernized Fafnir commenced in earnest in early 1998. Utilizing the same basic principles as the original Fafnir, the new round had to be highly accurate and lethal, but suffer only a modest recoil and weight cost. Incremental improvements led to the 6.5 x 39 mm cartridge within a fairly short period of time. Most of the work on the new round was performed by engineers from Great Maern.

An Assault Rifle for the Modern Era
At the same time, a separate team from the Grand Duchy developed a new rifle for the cartridge from the ground up. This group aimed to retain the accuracy of the Steinmann-derived Mark 148, but overcome reliability issues associated with the Mark 148's direct-impingement gas system. After surveying and field-testing a wide range of assault rifle designs, the Maern team specified that their new rifle would have the following characteristics:

- Barrel length between 510 and 550 MM
- Closed- bolt design
- Rotating bolt locking system
- Short-stroke gas piston system with user-adjustable flow settings
- Accurate to within .75 MOA at 100 meters from a cold barrel
- Modern, scientifically designed, ambidextrous ergonomics and controls
- 600 rpm minimum rate of fire
- Field-strippable using only a cartridge case
- Compatible with optics and other accessories of foreign make using universal rail mount systems
- Assault Rifles would share a minimum 62% parts interchangeability with new weapons of the same family
- Modular design: rifle must be modifiable in the field to accept different calibers and barrel lengths.
- Under 4.5 KG loaded
- Polymer parts of the weapon must incorporate a minimum 70% recycled materials
- 45% of the total energy used in each rifle's construction must be supplied by renewable energy sources such as wind, tidal, or biofuel.
- Steel and aluminum weapons components would, where appropriate, also be composed of recycled raw materials.

Many of the requirements above were put in place at the request of civilian politicians of both the Empire and the Duchy.

Field Trials and Scandals
After several false starts, several very respectable prototypes for the new Maern rifle emerged for trials in 2001. Steinmann's heir Claus returned with a rifle (v01.2) that met nearly all of the design requirements and actually exceeded many of them. In addition, several employees of the defunct von Andau concern started up a new corporation specifically to provide arms and materiel to the new states of Maern. The two prototypes were similar in many respects.. The von Andau design, designated the v01.4, extended only to an "assault rifle" configuration, whereas the Steinmann team had working prototypes of carbine and LMG versions of the rifle. By all accounts, the Steinmann design would have been adopted but for two reasons. Firstly it was much more expensive than the von Andau design. Secondly, Claus Steinmann's illicit relationships with Dynarian financiers was exposed to the media. Resigning from the project in a cloud of scandal, Claus Steinmann derailed the almost certain adoption of his own weapons design.

The Mark I "Wyvern" Assault Rifle
The von Andau v01.4 design emerge from the development process as the Mark 1 "Wyvern" Assault Rifle, officially designated as such on May 21, 2003. Significantly, the designation Mark numbers were reset to 1 to reflect the start of the new political era. The Grand Duchy of Maerngau has adopted this rifle as its primary combat infantry troopers' weapon. Approximately 43% of the nations' troops have the new rifle already; the remainder use equipment retained from the days of the Belerian Treaty Association. Many of these older weapons have been rechambered for 6.5mm, although the Grand Duchy plans to have 90% of its troops using the Wyvern by 2012. The Empire of Great Maern has been a bit slower in fielding the Wyvern, but plans to have a 100% adoption rate as early as next year.

I'm not much into guns and bullets stuff, but I have some nice pics.

Vespertilian military has a degree of independence in choosing their armament, so these ones are either most common or most (in)famous picks:

West Sector (Combined English)

- M4 Carbine using standard 5.56mm NATO rounds

North Sector (German)
All same weapons as West Sector with replaced Assault Rifles

G-36 Assault Rifle - Regular Infantry - 5.56mm NATO Rounds

HK416 Assault Rifle - Airborne and Special Forces - 5.56mm NATO Rounds

Sounds like a logistical nitemare.

It may seem to be like that, but my nation is practically massive and operates on 3 sectors of military, each with their own industrial divisions of weapon output and ordnance production. The West and North sectors practically are linked due to their similarities in terrain and enviornment. They operate on the 5.56mm NATO round which is widely used in their assault rifles and machine guns. The Eastern Sector however operates in a different enviornment which most suites the use of the AK-47 due to its liabillity in harsh conditions, the AN-94 was voted for Regular Infantry (yes and I may say including Special Forces) by the Chief of Staff and board of military advisors. All 3 sectors are controlled by independent Theater Generals but all link back to one board of 15 military advisors and representatives (5 of each Sector origin) with the Chief of Staff of the Supreme Forces taking authority and the right-hand man of the President of Drvarska.

5.7x28mm for P-90 and Five-Seven.

We use others guns, but this makes up 90% of our Forces.

This is where I go to make my weapons. I get the parts from there, and then edit in Photoshop. Just thought I'd put this out there. Just note that it's in French, and it does take a little while to load up the parts. Other than that it's fun and easy to use.

Our chief weapon is surprise, surprise and fear, fear and surprise.

Our two weapons are fear and surprise and ruthless efficiency.

Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.

(I'll come in again)

Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope

And nice red uniforms, Oh damn!

OOC: My current military is (very) loosely based off the modern German one, so yeah, quite a bit of H&K weapons are used.
