Your Killed in Action: How are their next of kin informed?

Postby New Shenandoah » Sun Jul 10, 2011 6:58 am

When you fight a war (or policing action, etc) surely you will lose lives.

How are the next of kin (family, significant others, however you interpret it) informed? Are they informed?

I know we have many tech eras here, so can't expect a single overwhelming method.
Do you send telegrams? A priest? Fellow service members? Are they simply mentioned in the news? Are they not told at all?

In New Shenandoah a member of the same service branch who is trained in how to handle these sad situations is sent to meet with the next of kin. Typically he is accompanied by a chaplain (for the comfort of the next if they are religious) and in some cases a member of the deceased's same unit.
They identify themselves and who they're speaking with to avoid mistakes, and then break the news softly and politely.

How is it done in your nation?

When we have someone killed in action, A service member from there unit will arrive to greet the widow with the UWO Flag and there will be a preist there to confort them

"Ma'm, On behalf of the Chancellor and The Union Defence Force, I am honored to present you with this flag to honor your Husband/Son who served greatly in battle, Our condolences and hearts go out to you and your family"

This is what is said by the presenter who carries the flag that will be givin to the widow, before that two service members will unfold and refold the flag before presenting it to the Widow

An e-mail is sent to the next of kin. We don't want to waste money on some fancy-pansy chaplains etc.

Typically a member of the Militia tasked with and educated on how to handle such situations would visit the address of the person the deceased specified should be notified should they pass on, and sadly break the news. A person such as clergy or what have you of the religion of the family will most likely be present to provide comfort.

in Heningrad when a member of the military dies his or her next of kin are informed by an other member of the armed forces in person and given the deceased's uniform, weapon, and the flag of Heningrad. the procedure differs slightly in the air force and navy because the family usually can't be given an aircraft or ship as the deceased's weapon.

A member of their unit (preferably a close friend) will visit to break the news. If the person is not there, then further attempts to contact them via email, phone, letter etc. will be made.

The base commander and a close friend will notify the spouse in person to provide comfort. The deceased warrior's CO will then send a letter to the husband/wife and his or her parents.

They are informed by the a member of the Defence Department face to face at their home or workplace. The death is then announced on the news. Within 6 months, they will then receive a letter of condolence from both the President and the commanding officer of the deceased's platoon.

H-Alba is a fairly safe place to be; being a neutral nation we are not involved in any conflicts and street crime is rare. When a police officer is killed in duty however, we send a clergy member (be it a Druid, Priest, Imam, Rabbi or what ever your religion is) along with another member from his squad to break the news. They are then presented with an honourary flag, which is a red flag with their face in the upper corner, and the birth date and date of death.

Within three months they will receive a letter of condolences from the Prime Minister of h-Alba, along with a cheque to thank them for his services in keeping our nation safe.

When a Boehemian soldier is killed in action, an officer and a military chaplain go to the next of kin's home and inform them in person.

The deceased's personal effects, a folded flag and a letter of condolence from the Premier may arrive later.

A telegram is sent home and delivered to the family. A letter from that person(written upon joining), Maximinian flag, and a large sum of money are also given to the family at the funeral directly by a family chosen member of congress or senate.

The names of the fallen are read up in the temple, church or mosque where they prayed to their god(s) but the family of the man are also sent a letter informing them of their lost as well as containing the mans pay, the money he had not managed to spend on booze and other personal items the guardsman owned

In the event of a Galladian Soldier/Ranger being killed in action during a war/dispute, the identification chip inserted in their arm deactivates. This alerts the closest military base/invasion camp/mothership's computer system, which automatically sends a notification to the War Office located in the capital city of Bastioforre.

The War Office then dispatches a personalised letter to the next of kin of the deceased. After a dispute, the Empress also holds a remembrance service, inviting the families of fallen soldiers to the Imperial Palace for a wake.

An officer and a soldier (or sailor, or Marine, or aviator, or Militiaman, depending on the branch of the military the dead served in) pay the family of the KIA soldier a visit, bearing a Saurisian flag and the deceased's peaked cap or helmet, depending on his/her rank in the Military.

After the conflict is over, the records of casualties and deaths are made public.Usually, the commanding officer or a "brother-in-arms" will visit the next of kin and inform them of the loss as well as pass along a recorded message that the solider had for his family.

A Soldier from the deceased serviceman's unit goes to their next of kin and presents the national flag which is wrapped around the medals that serviceman/women received. The government grants the service members family with a small sum of money out of respect. If the body can retrieved, it is given to the family and the family decides how to handle the burial.
