On a completely different note, I find myself wanting to design a mech(a?). Rather odd since I've harbored a strong dislike of such things for several years now.

It wouldn't be all that big. Probably three meters tall, maybe half that in width. I'd imagine it to be at or below five tonnes. Armament would consist of a beefier version of the standard infantry geweer (which is not but a rifle-ized version of this) and a low velocity 30mm - 40mm cannon. Armour would also be reasonably light, being meant only to defeat small arms and the like.

Is it worn like armour, or does the operator sit in a cockpit?

This is the fundamental difference between power armour and a mecha.

None of the above. It'd be a robot like the rest of the infantry. I'd honestly assumed "mecha" covered those as well.

Ahhh, Robits.

Well then it's just a very large robot. At three meters you've more or less hit the limit on an 'effective' size. A three meter tall robot can still crouch behind a house, or a low wall, etc. Any larger and the power pack/source/engine is going to have to start being exponentially larger to move the thing, as per the square cube law.

I remember seeing not long ago in this very thread some sort of low-velocity man-portable 30mm gun on a tripod/truck. I'm sure such a weapon couldn't topple a three meter tall, five-ton robot soldier.

Puzikas wrote:Idk I might just give you a breakdown of what I liked and what I didn't about it.

I heard it was a bitch to keep maintained, and was complex enough that it never entered full-scale production. That's about it.
I also hate it in Battlefield, but that's a different story.

Dang nabbit. :p

Would the recoil from a trio of 7.62x51mm rounds near simultaneously be comparable to say, a NTW-20 firing? I've already got quite a few not!NTW-20's in my arsenal, then again, why bother shooting three 7mm rounds if you can also hit 'em with one 20mm.

I dunno, if you design the recoil system properly, you get the energy delayed over a longer amount of time. Doing that, you can safely fire a non-recoilless 76mm shoulder mortar without having your arm torn off.
