Many cultures in the past sought to use the image of a bird to embody the virtues and nature of the people.

For example, the aquila, or "eagle", is used by the Roman legions, representing its fierceness in battle, and piety to the family and state. China, on the other hand, elected to use the phoenix to express the divine nature and supreme stature of the Chinese state.

Themiclesia, akin to China, uses the phoenix as its royal bird. The phoenix is immortal in Themiclesia culture, and is a bird of wisdom and vision; moreover, the phoenix is perceived as the greatest, gentlest and noblest of all avian animals. The phoenix only appears in the human world as an auspicious sign of good government.

Endemic to the forests of central and southern Germany, the Urvogel lends its name from the fact that it was one of the first creatures to be documented in full detail by modern biologists, most notably by Carolus Linnaeus. An insectivore (thought it does occasionally feed on fruits and carrion when it needs to), it had been traditionally associated with fertility and nature in Germanic culture and, later on, came to symbolize the vitality of the German people. As such, depictions of Urvogele were put on the coats of arms and flags of various German states and noble houses, most notably Prussia and the House of Hohenzollern, and it became a symbol of German nationalism in the 19th century with revolutionaries waving red, black, and gold flags bearing the Firstbird with its wings stretched out in the 1848 revolutions in Germany.

It's not a bird but it's close enough: Quetzalcoatlus, a large pterosaur who is quite common in much of Saurisia Proper and who eats mostly fish, small terrestrial animals, carrion, and whatever else is available for them to peck at. They were once used as aerial mounts by smaller Saurians though they were used as scouts since in battle, they were no match for the mighty dragons employed by the Drakònians.

Hircus avian species are incredibly aggressive and caution must heeded when near all but the smallest.
Caudipteryx is our national animal and an integral part of Hircus eco-system.

Perdi are a avian found near coasts and inland waterways. They will eat nearly anything they can fit in there mouths.

Magyar are another form of Caudipteryx. Don't let the pretty feathers fool you these 1.7 meter birds are very aggressive.

Sorna are true avian predators. While the other large birds eat smaller eggs and rodents these will eat larger prey. Since Hircus has no Equines these were used in ancient times as steeds.

Werp are named by the sound the make. They live in colder water and arctic areas.

Maka are a plump water fowl. Many are domesticated. There eggs are a delicious part of a healthy breakfast.
