What kind of phone are you looking for in general? And who do you want it to be your provider? A big company or one of the many third party providers with SIM cards?

Well, I'd rather it be one I can take with me to another provider if I must. Don't remember the term. Currently, we're on a family plan on AT&T.

You want an unlocked phone then. They will be more expensive than your normal contract phone, but it's worth it because you can jump providers and use international cards if you need to.

Some iPhones have already been jailbroken and unlocked as well as some Androids have been rooted and unlocked. You may want to start there or if you want something like a regular phone go for Nokia.
