I think national pride and patriotism are extremely useful tools for creating a national economy which is competitive in the global marketplace, especially if the economy is socialist in nature, as that naturally aims to reduce competition within the nation.

That is only if there's Socialism in One Country, as set forth by Stalin. If there's global revolution, then nationalism has no value.

I'd rather have a societal evolution than revolution.

It might just be that I grew up speaking Gaelic, with both my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc being native Gaelic speakers that I detest English, both the language and its government. I really don't mean offense, but as someone who did grow up speaking Gaelic, I have heard stories from my parents, and grandparents, their parents (etc) about the racism against the Gaels by both the Lowland Scots and the English, and anyone in the UK can see the same views about the Highlanders and Gaels in particular are still espoused today, that have their origins from the Highland clearances. I have heard the term teuchter used more than once as an insult, not jokingly. Racism against the Gaels still exists today. While I don't think independence solves that, it is a step in the right direction seperating us from the reason why an ethno-linguistic group still sees racist thoughts to this day.

I am also a highlander but my veiw is that the whole UK should work together to help each other overcome these issues. Rather than reverse what 400 years of people have worked so hard to achieve.

Well, why do we want global revolution? I would like to see a bunch of socialist nations, because government usual works better at a more local level. And I want the people to be unafraid to have pride in their nations and their forebears. I want this pride to drive them to be more productive citizens and to create great works.

I agree with you on government working better on a local level, but pride in a nation isn't what I'm going for. It should be pride in themselves, their families, their friends, their communities. Although pride in one's nation can be helpful sometimes, it creates hate and violence more often than it does peace and cooperation.

We need to evolve to realize that there are technical solutions to the real problems facing the world today. We need to apply the scientific methods in society.
