Ranma sat down at the bar and snatched up a glass of sake and downed it. She said, "Haven't been in here in awhile."

One of the humans almost ran for the bar, returning a moment later with a tray of frosty pints. Their drinking game abandoned, the squad was beginning to get quite drunk now, with Ratho, Tarik, Ricky and V'nel breaking into boisterous song. None of them seemed to notice that everyone was singing in different languages and no-one was singing the same song.

Scott put down his pint, "Aye, much as their politicians whine about it," I pointed a thumb at V'nel and N'tack, two of the lizard-like aliens known as "frekti". Seeing the querying look on Laz's face, Scott continued, "There used to be a human colony on a planet called Erasmus. Independent; didn't have much contact with the rest of the galaxy. The Ularn Federation showed up five or six years ago and at first we thought it was great. The federation's got a big manufacturing sector but isn't much for mining. They needed ores and minerals and we had plenty of both. For two years the economy never looked better."

He swallowed another mouthful of beer, "Then the whole colony got hit by an asteroid. We were close to a billion people; the impact wiped wiped out almost ninety percent of us. Dale over there," he gestured to the marine dancing with the girl with the buzz-cut , "was evacuated before the meteor hit. Ricky and I," this time he indicated the dark-skinned human by the bar, "made it to shelters and got evacuated a few weeks later. Amy's not from Erasmus - her family moved to the federation about sixty years ago I think.

"Now the problem was that the federation now had a hundred-million refugees living on their planets, and none of them could find jobs. Erasmus was mostly miners and farmers, and the federation's got robots to do that sort of work. Mostly we weren't qualified for the sort of thing. So you've got a hundred-million people suddenly on welfare, with no prospect of getting them off it. The politicians like to brush off the problem, saying humans're just too lazy or incompetent to find work. They pulled us out of Erasmus and now we won't even return the favour by contributing to their society. But really there's no work to find," he gestured at his uniform, "unless of course, you join the navy. Seriously, most folk there are screaming out for jobs. Living on welfare in the federation isn't pretty."

He finished off his pint, "So that's humanity; the Federation's ungrateful charity case!"
