Or alternatively, we could try to find some form of middle ground between homeschooling and a public school, such as a distance-ed-centric approach?

I believe that schools should be dissolved in order to find an alternate form of location-based education. Maybe hands-on training for the students will work, as they get to witness and experience the fields of study and work that they aspire to become a part of later.
