Why Is Sex Still Considered Dirty/Perverted/Shameful?

I can't wrap my head around the fact that there is still this common social perception that sex is somehow a dirty, taboo, or just plain bad. Sexuality is one of humanity's core instincts and a basic element of our society. For one, it's necessary, because without sex, as with many other species, the human race could not continue it's existence. Two, sex is pleasurable. People like doing it because it feels good, otherwise they wouldn't do it. So if sex is both a necessary and desirable aspect of the human condition, why do people still hold this perception of sex as something perverted or disgusting? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Religion.

That perception of sex is not as common in some places as it is in others. If you live in one of the backwards, depressing places, you have my sympathy.

I agree that people need to lighten up about sexual matters, but overall, a certain amount of Puritanism will pervade American culture for years to come.

I don't know. I'd like to hear some attempts at explanation, but General isn't big on Psychology graduates. I guess they're too busy writing advertising copy or whatever it is they do when they have their degree.

Meh, sex is more accepted today. I don't see why you should complain.

Hmm ok well to be honest I only usuallty stick to posting "new agey" stuff becuase my beliefs are more aligned to that and I usuallty stick away from sexuality thing becuase I have this whole self esteem thing about being judged and nhot liked. I really just want to fit in and like the idea of beiong liked not disliked but well thats just unrealisitc. people arenbt going to like me and some people will so I just have to stop being so full of my self and stop caring what people thionjkg abougt me. so yeah im gay and really spiritual and crazy and if no one likes it. I dont really care..... although thje cask wine im getting drunk on might have something to do with this present mindset im in :P

More accepted, yes, but most human societies today are still generally sex-negative rather than sex-positive.

Once upon a time having sex out of marriage would see you excomunitcated from society. Nowdays I know girls who have slepts with 20+ guys and think nothing of it.... Id say we have mentality evolved a long way since the old days.... althought there is still room for improvement

Religion certainly plays it's role, but I'm starting to think there's a segment of the general population that's just plain anti-fun.

Depends on how you look at it. Having multiple partners or being a prostitute is dirty and shameful, whether you bring religion into it or not.

^Because society labels things dirty/perverted/shameful to discourage people to do it in ways that are wise and in a manner/ extend that would make it dirty/perverted/shameful. Also just because someone finds that somethings feels good doesn't means it is good. Also, sex is very dirty. Rubbing/ falling of hairs/ spreading of bodily fluids isn't really a clean thing. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dirty

Social stigma and moral panic are no substitute for awareness and a good education, kid. Also, by that logic, humans are in a state of perpetual dirtiness from the very fact that we are biological organisms.

A little bit of a puritanical attitude toward sex is good because unplanned pregnancies can be a problem. Even though we have contraception now, it's not 100% effective, you can still catch STDs, and our brains are still wired the way they evolved before the invention of contraceptives.

There are some people who take prudishness too far, but there are other people who could do with a lot more of it.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't be careful about how they have sex or who they have sex with, but all puritanical this crap about sex being dirty is really not helping. In fact in some cases, it makes it worse.

Perhaps in the future we will evolve immunity froim these new diseases :P either way it is a change in mentality from the old ways. Once upon a time in the society I live in it was common for the father to choose his daughters spouse... its totally changed from those days when the impingement of universal right of freewill was common place (atleast in the society I live in)

The last part was a joke.

Sorry, but it didn't have the tone of a joke, so I couldn't tell. By the way, did you get the reference? :p

Why is having multiple partners or being a prostitute dirty? In some past societies either or both were acceptable. Doesn't that mean that it's entirely subjective?
