How can a car "literally" give birth?

Postby Achaea-Graecia » Wed Sep 29, 2010 5:20 pm

That is the new Dodge Caravan. If you haven't already seen the commercial, the ending of the script reads,

"Oh, and it literally gave birth to every other minivan."

Are you kidding me? It LITERALLY gave birth?! How does a car "give birth"?! How does a car LITERALLY give birth?! Could you imagine a minivan mounting another minivan and having sex with it?! And how would the mother minivan deliver the child? Do you open the trunk nine months later and there is a baby minivan inside?! That's insane! Why is America so stupid? Well, for one, there is a blatant LIE in a commercial for a well-recognized car company!

It's extremely noticeable too because the speaker stresses the word "literally." He says it like this, "And it, literally, gave birth to every other minivan."

Do you know what the word literally means? Have you ever heard of "figuratively"?
"Oh no... saying figuratively wouldn't have made such a big impact on the audience. Instead, we opened the dictionary, looked up "literal," tore it out, crumpled it up, chewed it, and swallowed it. Then, spat it back out so none of the kiddies have basic vocabulary skills." What a load of crap.

I mean, I could imagine that Dodge created the concept of a minivan, and other car companies followed suit, but this is just dumb.

It doesn't inspire quite this level of rage in me, but the bizarre misuse of "literally" to mean "not literally" is certainly a pet peeve of mine. It does, however, as you point out, lead to some fairly hilarious mental images.

If it's new, how did it even figuratively give birth to the concept of the minivan?
Wouldn't that be an older car, that isn't this one?
It's the least literal a birth can be
