Ukrainian War VI: Pyrrhus Returns

Previously, on the Ukrainian War...

We encourage everyone to consult their preferred news sources for up-to-date news. As it stands, the situation is changing. The Russians have adjusted their goals, concentrating on the east and the south, while showering Ukraine with missile strikes and artillery barrages. The Ukrainians have counterattacked and regained territory, not to the point of evicting the Russians but enough to make them think. And all the while, the shadow of Pyrrhus looms over Bakhmut...1 Prigozhin has taken the mantle of Horus Lupercal...2 it seems there is blood in the river Moskva...3 we see what might be Putin cleaning house...4 Pyrrhus' shade returns...5

1 Pyrrhus in Bakhmut - Bakhmut, Russia's pyrrhic victory.
2 "Spit it out, boys! Staging a coup here!" - The Death of Stalin
3 "Aye, kind of a mood killer." - Hellsing Ultimate Abridged
4 "[They're out of the picture, mate.] Putin's cleaning house." - OG MW2
5 Pyrrhus Returns - ...this time, in Avdiivka

how much has the frontline moved in the last 4 months? it seems like it's pretty deadlocked, but I haven't been following it.

For the moment, the only serious movement has been around Bakhmut, yes.

Truth is the first casualty in war. We probably shouldn't believe anybody.

The great thing about capturing a city is that the exact requirements for what counts as capturing it are nebulous, so you can claim to have captured it as many times as you want.

How many times has the Voyager probes left the Solar System again?

Yup. General Mud's forces still hold the battlefield.

The Russians (and the Wanger mercs) control nearly all of the Bakhmut, but the Ukranians have retaken flanking positions north and south of the city. Both sides of have lost plenty of soldiers in the fighting, but the Russians apparently took the worst of it. But that's what ya get for trying offensives in urban areas against dug-in defenders who know the terrain.

The neighborhood of Bakhmut is such a microscopic territory...
To some extent, I am surprised by these maps, on which Prigozhin occupied several new yards and the Armed Forces of Ukraine recaptured a couple of suburban wastelands from some Russian company. As if who controls Baba Luba's garden is a worthwhile topic for popular discussion.

Bakhmut itself is taken if you only consider the city limits, but a fierce battle is ongoing in its vicinity, particularly on the flanks.

Ukraine is also conducting shaping operations for the counter-offensive throughout the front, so far the Russians think the counter-offensive could come from... anywhere and in any direction. So I would say that they've been relatively successful in keeping the enemy off balance.

The solar system’s end is obviously wherever the Voyager probes happen to be, as all of space is rightful human territory.

That said I feel like Bakhmut is reasonably conquered in the technical sense (Russia has the land) but not in the general (Ukraine still meaningfully contests the area to an extent).

I just checked and it took the Russians around 9 months 2 weeks and 6 days(according to Wikipedia) to finally take Bakhmut. About a week shorter than the battle of Verdun to take a relatively strategically unimportant city. And even then them holding it could be in flux depending on how fighting on the outskirts and flanks develops(the sheer amount schadenfreude from Ukraine pulling a Stalingrad on them could power the entire planet.) And likely with casualties in the tens of thousands. Fucking grim.

Doesn't the 'drone attack' in the Kremlin seem fishy?

I mean, 2 people were seen going up to the flag pole, as if it was staged, and the 'drone attack' barely did any damage to 'assassinate'. It seems like they're using that as a way to cause harm in Ukrainian peoples, even though they've been doing that even before the 'drone attack'. Sounds like the Marco Polo Bridge incident re:work to me.

First... To say something about Zaporizhzhia on this thread.

Ukraine has delayed it's counteroffensive, but I still think Ukraine's gonna try aim for Tokmak, Melitopol and Berdyansk rather than go full out on Bakhmut

That would certainly be the most logical choice. I'm still thinking that we're gonna see a repeat of last year where Ukraine launched two counteroffensives at basically the same time.
