Read the thread again. He's being held pending retrial on rape charges (which no-one expects him to be acquitted of), and will still serve his original sentence for serious sexual assault of a minor. So not free at all.

I don't see what's so wrong about this:

First of all, the defense team had a good objection to the second charge and managed to convince the court. Hence why it was overturned. for retrial.

Secondly, one of the convictions was not overturned because the confession made it stick. Hence why it is not being overturned, that one.

Seriously, this is a defense attorney's day representing their client. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Right, for rapists and people who commit sexual offences against children. I know it isn't great for information extraction, but that's not what I would implement it for. It's purely to make the rapist/sexual offender feel pain, as they made their victim feel pain.

The man's defense lawyer actually had to convince the court for a retrial.

I know defense lawyers are so little spoken of, but that's their job, to get you out of jail or with the least sentence possible.

He doesn't get to walk. He was convicted on two charges. One conviction was overturned because the prosecution failed to prove its case. He's being held in jail until he's put on trial for that charge again.
