Venezuela Officially becomes a dictatorship.

Election/recall processes were suspended when Maduro realized he would lose and lose worse than Trump in November.

I am gravely saddened but honestly I think we all knew they were a dictatorship masquerading as a democracy so long as the party in power won.

NSG what do you think will happen next?

It looks like a large scale citizen's revolt will occur with paramilitaries like Colombia had for years.

To be totally honest, Venezuela was a dictatorship ever since the second term of Chavéz.

I can't say that I'm surprised. Let's just hope he doesn't stay in power too much longer.

Venezuelans want food and medicine. Those issues don't relate to this crisis.

Op is biased towards people who aren't yankee neoliberals. The real culprit of Venezuela's misfortune is the oil price lobby.

So Venezuela becomes a dictatorship...again. Honestly, no one should be surprised by this because the PSUV have been in power for so long and it's top members have basically enriched themselves off the wealth the oil brought to Venezuela, so they're never going to put themselves into a position where they'll lose their revenue streams. Maduro also has the backing of the military and during the last round of major protests, has demonstrated with the orders to use live ammunition against unarmed protesters, that he is willing to kill if it means he stays in power.

The sad thing is that ordinary Venezuelans, and especially the poor, are between a rock and a hard place. The government won't fix the economic crisis, because doing so would basically undo everything Chavez had built up, and they can't popularly overthrow their leader because they'd be shot dead in the streets if they did.

Their should be a massive protest against this travesty against democracy and the government's refusal to accept the result of the last parliamentary election. Hopefully they don't cancel the 2018 election and the President loses by a landslide but honestly I wouldn't put it past them to rig it or more likely cancel it outright.

The last time Venezuelans protested, dozens were killed and the government have police shoot-to-kill orders.

Then the people start defying the police and rebel against them too. I don't normally call for that but the Venezuelan government should be ousted in a revolution.

Cancelling the 2018 election would result in catastrophe.

I do not believe that socialism in general is to blame but more like how they implemented it along with corruption, over-dependence of oil and police brutality.

There is nothing about the government participating in the market (rail companies Nederlandse Spoorwegen (or Abellio), SNCF and RATP being the examples I can instantly recall), but nationalising a supermarket is overkill. Artificially controlling prices is crazy. Leaving corruption unaddressed is ridiculous. And cracking down on legitimate protests like that is a recipe for disaster.

What do I think will happen next? Popular revolution, inevitably. When there's a shortage of toilet paper in a bankrupt, economically backwards state, that's the inevitability.
