I think that's a bit harsh; it all depends on the context. If the goal was realistic portrayal, then no, it needs work. If the goal was a cartoonish portrayal, I think it's rather good. If Vass wants to use this style for a comic or cartoon, then I think she has a solid basis.

I'm also an artist. We all have our different styles. Some say my drawings are just scribbles on a page, and indeed they sometimes look like that. Others can clearly see the form and find beauty in them. The value of art isn't always what can be interpreted by an audience, although that's of course ideal; it's the value of what the artist puts into the work.
Think of yourself as a parent of a young child who had brought a drawing home from school, and it's not terribly good. Would you dare tell them "Oh this is really bad, you must try harder"
No, you probably wouldn't Perhaps out of sympathy for your child, but if it were my child, I'd realise that my child likely isn't getting formal training from school. I'd probably say "I can't wait to see your next one" because I'd love to see improvement in my child's work. And they can have their own style; it doesn't have to be a hyperrealistic representation, god knows I can't do that myself. The point is, don't stifle someone's style because it isn't yours; they may have a different aim than you do. Whether they're cartooning, drawing for fun, prefer a fine sketch style, or shade heavily, just because you don't do that doesn't make it automatically bad.
