He was but he was also an 83 year old man with Alzheimer's. His quality of life was not something likely to increase with the passage of time. Luckily, through the miracle of the motion picture and television and all that, he'll be with us for a long, long time. Long enough for you to have to explain to your relatives in one or two generations who he was and why he was funny and put up with their eye-rolling and blank looks. :)
