Incidentally, if anyone is trying to compensate for something it's clearly South Korea, the official name of which in its native language (대한민국, Daehan Minguk) literally translates as "the Republic of the Great Han." Great, in this case, being great as in "Alexander the Great" or "man, that kimchi was great!" rather than the more mundane use of "great" to mean "larger" such as the "Great" in "Great Britain."

uh, dude, it was independent for 1700 years. It governed itself before 1602 when the pope offficially said it was a nation. Heck, San Marino conquered territories and took land in a war which the papal state gave the land. So san marino was independent for a long time.
