I'd recommend it, otherwise you'll get very confused. Technically, there's only one book - The Lord of the Rings. But back when it was published, the idea of publishing a book that long which wasn't a bible or a dictionary was insane, so it got split into three. I'd also recommend reading The Hobbit beforehand, but it's not strictly necessary.

I have the urge to buy a compound bow, when I see a puddle or anything remotely muddy I must drive my jeep through it, I started listening to outlaw country music, I'm wearing camo as we speak…

To be fair I grew up doing most of those things but distanced myself when I practically became a hipster In highschool.
