How will you survive the 'end of the world' ?

I've always been fascinated by apocalyptic scenarios and sometimes I fantasize about imaginary survival plans for a zombie apocalypse or my first action in the outbreak of nuclear war. So let's have a discussion everyone's 'end of the world' survival plan. Now for the purposes of this hypothetical situations imagine that the apocalypse has touched all countries and people. So yes, Madagascar will still have zombies or the super virus

Scenarios to be considered (poll scenarios are also valid)

Zombie apocalypse

A strange virus has been slowly infecting all the countries of the world for the past week. Media reports have been fragmented and have described infected individuals as exhibiting animalistic behaviors but no global panic has started as governments around the world have censored the media in an attempt to avert mass panic. However that is all changed when a infestation strikes your countries most populated city (not the capital city) where gory spectacle is broadcasted worldwide. Shockingly it is the same as you flick through the other channels, similar scenes assault your eyes in places like Lyon, Liverpool, Sydney, Shanghai, San Francisco or Frankfurt. The word 'Zombie' quickly begins to spread as everyone watches their television screens in apprehension or begin their disaster survival plans. That is where I leave you, at your house (with or without your family) after seeing the TV screen suddenly black out and replaced with an emergency broadcasting system.

I'd also like to mention the word 'Zombie' is not taboo in this scenario unlike every other zombie movie. The zombies can be assumed to be just like the zombies in the =http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Zombies'The Walking Dead' except that they don't decay

Nuclear holocaust

It all started with that damned conflict in Asia! Tension between Pakistan and India have reached melting point over the last few weeks over a dispute over a newly discovered diamond deposit. At first the conflict sounded with sporadic skirmishes as each side attempted to build a barrier over the diamond deposit to secure if. Then a roared into a full-spanning conventional war as Pakistan mobilised its military to annex the North- West of India. No one is certain who was at fault when the first ICBM was launched but reports came thick and fast as the war spiraled into a nuclear holocaust fueled by the paranoia and fear that started the it. Indian ICBM hits Multan killing 9 million. Pakistan ICBM hits New Dehli killing 14 million. Chinese ICBM hits Mumbai killing 22 million. North Korean ICBM hits Seoul killing 17 million. Israelian nuke hits Mecca killing 25 million. American nuke hits Pyongyang killing 3 million people. Russian dead hand system activates. As you soon as you hear the first report of nuclear fire between India and Pakistan, that is where you start, at your house with or without your family.

It takes 1 day before the Russian dead hand system activates and miraculously the nukes never land in your starting city either by a lucky missile defense system or the cities insignificance.

Solar Flare

It was just a normal Saturday morning for you waking up at 9am to the sound of your favourite radio station. After preparing breakfast by the kitchen bench and turn on the television to see the weekly weather report, you hear that its going to be 19 degrees today. Chilly you think to yourself. Suddenly a pulse glistens from the sky illuminating the interior of your home in an wash of blue light. As the blue pulse recedes your discover that the TV has been rendered destroyed. Curiously you also notice that the lights in your house has been switched on but to your dismay, they don't work either. You place down your bowl of cereal and walk towards your computer but alas it will not work. The blinking lights of your internet modem that once provided you comfort and entertainment now lie dormant as you being to think "what else has been destroyed" ? And that is where you start, in your house (with or without your family).

Yes the solar flare has destroyed all electrical devices within the world, unless it has been electromagnetically shielded.

Personally, I'd take the Solar flare scenario because that's the least disastrous of them all. Society unlike a nuclear holocaust or zombie apocalypse has not been completely destroyed yet.

Regarding the last one, that's not really an 'end of the world' scenario.

I lived through the Carrington Event. It wasn't really that big of a deal.

This is a good one. Question: on Nuclear apocalypse, is it realistic or like Fallout?

Climate Change, cause don't you love -15 degree to +200 degree fahrenheit climate swings?
Great dying, YAY!
You're saying the VERY mild effects of climate change.

In the 1800s?

I'd take Blade Runner/Terminator

What do you mean?

Are you asking that the devastation is like that portrayed by Fallout or that weapons aren't found in cabinets in your local grocery store?

Something like Captain Tripps (aka Tube neck) from Stephen Kings The Stand seems reasonable to survive the first global wave, but since I have a chronic condition I would probably die with thousands of asthmatics, cancer patients, and others who ran of the things they needed. Stephen King goes into graphic detail on how the second wave dies.

It was kind of cool, really.

The 1989 and July 23rd 2012 storms were nearly as strong.

It could be, really depends on how people react. Think about how much knowledge is lost from the destruction of all electronics, that's the entire internet or any computer network destroyed. That's pretty apocalyptic considering some governments rely on computer networks to govern and communicate.

I dunno.
When I think "end of the world", Im thinking Revelations, game over man, those of you coming home, follow me. For the rest, the train to Hell is to your left. You get the last car with the Bay City Rollers, and Andy Gibb singing "Shadow Dancing" all the way into the lake of fire.

So you survive the first wave, but what about all the stuff that happens afterwords.

I can think of all those poor people in the hospitals dying once the power goes out.

Volcanic ash. Perhaps the aftermath with hold something better than the rest.

Well I live reasonably close to an active supervolcano so I'll probably chose the "buried under several dozen metres of ash" option.

Well, I'm prepared for multiple scenarios. I have land, water, agricultural supplies, livestock, fuel, food, and enough ammo to hold off my entire county. And that is not counting the people that would join me.

I guess I could handle zombies, overpopulation, solar flare, chinese EMP, and polar switch.

There'd be two ways to survive either of these:

1- Go to a rural area (the desert of Central Australia would be an ideal location) and ride out the storm.

2- travel on a spaceship to start a human colony on mars. If you can fix the air pressure there and then plant trees, these trees will release Oxygen and make Mars a suitable habitat.

I will choose Solar Flare because it doesn't sound like a major event for mankind to fall.

I am in a college so the military will gun us all down like they do in some scenarios. Expect a media blackout on Kent state 2.0 with even more casualties.

Solar flare is the easiest. It would last the shortest (really, we can rebuild that shit pretty easy), and people lived like that for most of history anyway. Plus, it would shake up the social order a bit, and hopefully I could jocky myself into a nice and comfy monarchy, junta, or religious post.

You will also have to generate green house gases to raise Mars' temperature, right?

I hope you save some room for the Junta.

I have plans to build another nation in the ruins of the old.

I'll just go through all the poll options.

Zombie apocalypse: There's opportunity for badassery and such, but chances are I'd just end up trying to survive with a group of survivors in a fortified location with lots of guns. And if there are a lot of zombies we're in deep shit. Girlfriend would probably get bitten, and then I'd have to shoot her, or any family member. And then there's also the idea of me being bitten or ripped apart, and I'd prefer not to get killed by a rotting corpse. So that's out.

Global pandemic (like the Bubonic plague): I hate this idea because it means there's no control over whether you're infected. I could go outside, not do anything too dangerous, and still catch it and die. I prefer the zombie apocalypse to this. But unfortunately this could actually become a reality.

Nuclear holocaust: Means everyone dies, basically. Food sources and water sources are all contaminated, there's no way to really survive unscathed. So this is also out.

Climate change (a 5m rise of sea level, global famine): Not so terrible, though I like my food. I could survive though, and it looks like this is where we're headed as is. We're overpopulated as it is. I'm fortunate enough to be in an area and have access to areas that are unlikely to be affected by famine or global warming. So this is a good option.

Solar flare that destroys all electrical devices on earth: Easy to survive in theory, except this means no shower, no toilet, etc. We'd all have to go back to the 16th-17th century. Electricity is also essential for survival in many areas, particularly very cold ones, or very hot ones. I prefer climate change.

Super volcano where the ash blots out the sun for years: I picked this one. Totally will kill lots of people and wildlife, but survivable, and I prefer cold to heat. We can grow food with lamps and such. Just wear a mask when going out and everything will be fine.

Alien Invasion (think war of the worlds, but the aliens don't become sick): Scary and easy to be killed. I'd prefer not to, it's like the zombie apocalypse, except the enemy is much smarter and has weapons. So I'd be screwed.

Robot invasion (think Terminator): I'd prefer not to have to survive this either. They can't be reasoned with (at least aliens are still capable of thought and communication), and they are completely emotionless, and have advanced technology. Nope.

Overpopulation: This is one is already sort of a reality. I don't consider it an apocalypse scenario.

Yes, but you get my point. Hypothetically if you flew on a spaceship to Mars with a few scientists and a couple hundred other people, Mankind would probably stand a decent chance to survive there (probably roughly 60-70%, depending on how fast greenhouse gases can be used). It's certainly a risky move but I think that if someone did it in a end of the world scenario that it would be a risk worth taking.

Um. With no electricity, water, waste disposal, or food supply, all major cities would dissolve into chaos. Most people in developed countries don't know how to live like that anymore. It is also impossible in the big cities. Ten of millions would die. Survivors would then maraud the rural areas, pillaging farms and the prepared people.

It would take months to rebuild the power grids( if there are even still workers). You do realize we would have to repair every part of the power grids of the world, from the power plants to the street pole transformers? Economies have been erased. There are only basic medical supplies. Short and easy? Not even in theory (because I just gave the actual theory).

To add more food for thought, most modern vehicles would useless due to their fried computers. Supermarkets have no food because of this. The repair trucks for the power grid can't go anywhere. The leaders can't give orders, because there are no comms networks.
