Should Businesses be allowed to discriminate?

Postby San Lumen » Wed Nov 04, 2015 3:03 pm

In 22 states in the US currently there are laws preventing someone from being fired for being gay or denying service to LGBT people which i support. You should not be able to fired because of who you love or your race or denied service. As a business you serve all. You don;t get to pick and choose.

I've heard some say business should be allowed to discriminate. Plus in some states you can also be denied housing or evicted from your apartment for being gay. If its ok for someone to be fired for being gay or for restaurant to kick out a gay couple should a business be allowed to deny service to a African American couple or interracial couple? Can a doctor or EMT say they won't treat someone who is gay or African american? should a landlord be able to kick someone out for being gay? Where do you draw the line? Your thoughts?

No, they shouldn't. We're all humans; we deserve equal treatment.

Also, OP, you'll need to share your thoughts on the matter.

I agree.

An equality which can only be endured under thermo nuclear warfare.

Seriously though.

In Arkansas, we have an anti-antidiscrimination statute.

No, seriously.

It's bullshit.

yeah i heard about that. Its insane and the arguments for it were absurd. The politicians that voted for it should be denied service in Little Rock so they can see how it feels.

Sure, it's their business. If you don't like what they do, start your own. Maybe you can even discriminate against people who discriminate, if that makes you happy.

Yes, I agree with this. I don't think businesses SHOULD discriminate, but the alternative (no right to discriminate) is worse.

So you;d be totally fine with a restaurant or store or bakery or florist in your town or city that said it wouldn't serve LGBT or black people or anyone who wasn't white?

Their businesses operate under laws which protect their business and their customers. Those laws should include nondiscrimination clauses because otherwise the laws are entirely one-sided.

Why should they have a right to discriminate? if someone is fired for being gay you'd have no problem with that?

Of course I'd have a problem with that. It isn't morally right. But it shouldn't be banned.

Wrong questions.

The right questions in America would be: "it's ok for someone to be fired for being heterosexual, or for a restaurant to kick out a heterosexual couple? Should a business be allowed to deny service to a White AngloSaxon Protestant couple, or an mixed English-German couple"?

Basically, you should ask the American majorities how much they would love to be discriminated against.

I don't want it in my country, but if Americans want it in theirs, then I don't see why they shouldn't have it.

Why do you think the the laws are one-sided if they do not prevent business owners from discriminating against customers or employees?

Well then how are you going to prevent it then without making it illegal?
