The middle answer is the only one I can really expand on, so lets go for that. While Long's influence has been incredibly important on Louisiana and the country, especially with regards to public works and education, the effect of what McCarthy did to US politics is still in full force today. He wasn't of course, the first red hunter, but he was one of the most vitriolic, and we still see people being denounced as "communists" today, the intent being that this will discredit and embarrass them. The witch hunts aren't quite as strong as they were back then, and the country seems to be warming up to leftist policies (hi Bernie!), but there's still a fair amount of hostility, especially towards anything to the left of social democracy, that won't be going away soon.

I don't even think Social Democracy is viewed favorably in the US because of McCarthy. It's capitalist or filthy commie to many of the GOP.

Well yes, I said there was much more hostility towards stuff further left of that but that resistance to it still exists. But one can't deny it's starting to take hold in the mainstream.
