Language Discussion Thread

Postby Stomalia » Sat Feb 14, 2015 7:04 pm

Hello all. How many of you speak several languages and/or are learning or want to learn a new language? This thread is here for us to share tips on learning languages and bragging on how many languages we speak :P. I am a native English (US) speaker and I am learning Spanish currently.

I'm following Gabriel Wyner's tips on learning a language, and I plan to eventually speak, read, and write Spanish and Portuguese fluently using his tips.

I'm a native Spanish and Asturian speaker. I can speak French, English, Catalan and Galician. I have mild fluency in Japanese and can, because of their Latin roots, understand Italian, Portuguese and Romanian, although I sadly do not speak these languages. I'm trying to learn Hindi, but the process is slow.

Even if someone doesn't know much about these languages, the similarities between Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Latin are very clear.

English and German. I used to be fluent in German but after more than a decade with an absence of opportunity to speak.... I fear I've lost much of it.

If you ever needed to sharpen your German skills there are many sites where you can speak with native speakers as long as you help people with their English in return.

There are a few thousand native speakers, and about 2 million people that have studied it.

And as for my language skills, I can speak English and Russian.

English, Malay/Indonesian, Chinese, and French. From most fluent to least. Learning Korean, Japanese, and Arabic.

Also, instead of 'Hindustani' it should be Hindi in the poll there.

I am native English-speaker attempting to attain fluency in Afrikaans, Dutch, French, German and Spanish. I would say I've attained the highest level (with the exception of English) in French and Spanish. I should concentrate on Afrikaans considering my father is a native-speaker!

German is not a highly spoken language compared to the ones listed in the poll. I put together the top nine most spoken languages (except for Dutch). I'll just replace Dutch with German.
