"Rowdy" Roddy Piper dies at 61

Postby Ameriganastan » Sun Aug 02, 2015 2:04 am

I'm a day or so late apparently, but I just found out while browsing Tv Tropes. Cardiac arrest. They Live is a kickass flick, and he was even awesome as himself in Saints Row. This sucks.

Yeah. I saw this a couple days back on SquaredCircle. I was shocked. I never really watched any matches of him, but I knew his name. Big heel of the early WWF. Feuding against Hogan, helping build him into the face he was for the company for years. Helped build Hulkamania and the company to what it is today...

Its just sad to see another legend go... And at 61 too... I know the job is intensive but 61 doesn't feel that old.

I wonder how the typical life span of a wrestler compares to that of the NFL veterans?

YOu know, so many of them on steroids, in both workplaces, and taking all that punishment.

I know that the NFL projected lifespan is surprisingly low.

He was astoundingly effective as a heel, and was one of the people responsible for raising the bar when it came to promos. His villainy was pure and entertaining. He was also underrated as an actor despite delivering one of the most memorable lines in cinematic history.

I heard that he died, a bit more since he was born where I live. Condolences to Rowdy's family and colleagues, may he rest in peace.

Even without that when you are over 6'5 your heart muscles end up strained.

I think she would be disqualified if she and her opponent were having sex on the wrestling ring.

The Espys named her pound for pound the greatest fighter of the year, beating out Floyd Mayweather jr, who had previously said "I never heard of her.", her response on receiving the award "I wonder how Mayweather feels being beaten by a woman for once, you know who I am now?" I bet Roddy wouldve laughed at that.

Her fight intro has in fact always been "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey. So it seems fitting she should dedicate the title fight to his memory.

Ive heard he was really a very great guy.

No, he didn't fail as a heel. He reinvented what being a heel meant. He paved the way for later fan-favorite heels like Edge, Kurt Angle, and even The Rock.

This. He paved the way for the creation of the Tweener (not good but not bad) if not creating it for television. How would the crowd react when Stone Cold passes out from Bret Hart's Sharpshooter? How would the crowd react when he would betray everyone and ally with Vince to beat the Rock? Fuck, how would Hogan be heel when going against the Rock? He paved the way for this type of wrestler for entertainment.

:eyebrow: Scotland's greatest wrestler? Doubtful, given that he's Canadian.

If you look at his early matches, he was entirely effective as a heel. The problem with effective heels is that eventually the fans start to love them and they inevitably turn face.
