As many may be aware, Australia currently has a 'turn back' policy on boat arrivals carrying Asylum Seekers (Nicknamed 'illegals' by the federal government and general populace, despite the fact that they are not illegal). There have been many cases and allegations of abuse and other mistreatment in the various detention centres such as the one on Nauru and the one on Manus Island. Recently on Nauru, there have been allegations of staff treating the asylum seekers 'like animals' (Source: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-06-29/desperate-nauru-refugees-formed-suicide-pacts-social-worker/6581906) and there has been a Government review into the abuses.

As such, this new 'Border Force Act' could be seen as to stop whisteblowers from calling the staff and federal government out from committing crimes such as torture. So NSG, what do you think about this new act? Is it infringing on human rights? Do you think the whole system of immigration in Australia is good or bad?

I personally think that it is a move by Abbott to silence whistle-blowers and enable the staff at Nauru and Manus Island to do at they please, including keeping the figures of children in the offshore processing centres secret, as it has been a contentious issue.

honestly, fuck this government. Fuck them all- labour, liberals, they're all fucking kleptocratic cunts who only disagree when it's an argument of who gets into power. All they care about is the economy and staying in power. They're allowing people to be abused, human rights to be breached, and then covering it up. Fucking cowards, the lot of them. They don't deserve to be in charge of this country. The whole parliament should be shot against a wall for doing this to hundreds of people knowingly and then hiding it from twenty three million more. Just fuck them, these camp workers don't deserve jail, they should be hailed as whistleblowers who stood up for those who couldn't stand up for themselves.

I would tune down the rhetoric a bit. I do agree that most of them are not particularly bright (hint: I'm being way more subtle and trying to say the same thing) and that they are wrong. I have also lost faith in the Australian people and our democracy, because we appeal to the plebicites and the lowest common denominator.

The Australian people would in fact be a problem to our fucked up system if there wasn't cheap bread, milk and nightly episodes of sixty minutes. The government are bright in ways, but those ways are more business-like and less like an actual, caring government.
Also, it's not rhetoric. Like, what do they honestly deserve for doing this again and again and again and hiding this from us. They're crooks, and crooks in positions of responsibility need punishment if they choose to exercise their heartless urges.

Anger aside, this is a breach of international law I'm pretty sure, and I hope the UN intervenes and stops this.

Two of the five permanent UNSC members (China and Russia) also censor/restrict their press freedoms.

Unfortunately, it's not a very uncommon practice.

The Australian government has issued a warrant for your arrest. Come along quietly now.

I'd prefer we not engage in mass murder and instead prosecute and jail them.

Y'know like humane people.

Oh joy, what a world we live in.

But they have power. Take away their means of getting it back for sure and you're sorted.
After all, what have they done that makes them so good or valuable? I'd say that on a moral standpoint the average joe is saintly compared to these people.

And we don't have to delve beyond our morals to commit atrocity just to sate our revenge fantasies.

Oh for goodness sake: we are meant to be a first world free country, not some authoritarian regime. I really do hope tony gets destroyed at the next elections for the sake of the country.

I can't believe this. It is ridiculous. Almost every Australian I've talked to has spoken out against the Australian policy on asylum-seekers. I mean that past debacle with Indonesia was just ridiculous, and Australia has a long history of ill-treatment of refugees and turning them back in violation of human rights.

Now, I don't know if this latest law is directly related to clamping down on people speaking out on governmental abuse of migrants, but even if it isn't, whistleblowing is a natural part of a vibrant democracy. We have to be able to know when governmental abuses occur behind the state curtain.

Except Labor voted for this as well...

Unfortunately, the Australians on NS are different to the majority of the ones irl.
Mostrov wrote:They wipe the emails of the whistleblowers and the like who receive emails pertaining to this.

If Australians weren't willing to accept this why did they vote the government in? In my mind this is probably one of the better possible solutions given what was happening regarding refugees and the like.

Actually, they can now take them to court for it now and lock them up. Not to mention that rule of the mob is entirely immoral because it relies on the assumption that the majority is always right.
Sebtopiaris wrote:Anger aside, this is a breach of international law I'm pretty sure, and I hope the UN intervenes and stops this.

It is a breach of international law, however the UN doesn't have the power or the will to do anything against countries like Australia unless it has the explicit support of the permanent UNSC members.

This is ridiculous. Tony Abbott is working full time into turning Australia into an 18th century authoritarian regime.

This is indeed a violation of human rights and freedom of speech and the press.

I'm not sure what labor are doing. They're basically acting as yes-men
