People still have respect for the UN?

The UN was established to prevent any major wars from escalating. Closest we got to escalation was Iran-Iraq. So on that front, the UN is doing ok. The problem is that the UN is also pretending to do a lot of other stuff, and that stuff they're not very good at, like putting SA on the UNHRC. Yes, SA is already on it, they're looking to lead. Currently Germany's leading.

I thought so too. But, alas, I'm not.

But, you know. The UN.

They're also members, so that probably helps.

I mean it's not like they have supplied weapons and funding to several terrorist organizations and holds one of the worst Human Rights records in history just above some of the more draconian African states and North Korea. Plus the whole persecution of religious minorities and overall horrid treatment of women.

But fuck it why not have a state with one of the worst human rights records run the HRC. I mean it only makes perfect sense right?

It would lessen the influence of the western countries to use the UN to spread their ideology. Even if Saudi Arabia gets to lead the HRC what exatcly bad can happen anyway?

Do you not understand why SA wants to be there? I'll give you a four letter hint: "Iran". You see, ever since Dubya's War in Iraq, the Saudis have been losing influence to Iran. As a result, Iran is now more powerful than Saudi Arabia, but like any Middle Eastern state, has its fair share of Human Rights Problems. Saudis are looking to take the UNHRC and utilize it as a political tool against Iran.

The UNHRC is really powerless to enforce international laws protecting human rights anyway. Basically every single member of the United Nations has been criticized for its record by the UNHRC since it's inception and yet nothing has changed.

Saudi Arabia is reportedly planning to make a bid to head the United Nations' Human Rights Council,

It'll be about as successful as Ron Paul's bid for the presidency.

I'm pretty sure all the President of the Human Rights Council does is preside over the chamber and execute the will of the assembly. Does it actually matter whether it's Mugabe, Jesus or a dead rat?

I don't think they will head the UN human rights council.

I also wonder how Russia and China can be members of the human rights council. This council has no credibility even as of now.

Hooray! Totally a very very good bid. Much impress. Very respect.

So right, wowwowwow.

Please no. We need a more neutral country to head it. Perhaps a country with a history of natural disasters or a country with a clean record.

Sudan wanted to head the human rights council at the height of the Darfur crisis, and nobody gave a shyte.

I don't see why all the moral outrage is just now emerging.

And Russia and China both have a seat on the Special Committee on Decolonization. This is the UN we're talking about.

They're not very good at it. They tried to have the Cook Islands and Niue declare independence and they both rejected it through popular referendums. Twice.

No. Over half of the remaining "non-self-governing territories" on their list are British overseas territories. They might as well be called the Special Committee on Harassing British Citizens.

Of the remainder, two are French, three are American, one is Moroccan (Western Sahara) and one is New Zealander (Tokelau).

The only thing UN is good at is NOT getting things done, so it doesn't matter at all who heads it's HRC, because the human rights situation in the world will not improve anyway.

Even if they head it (and there's no guarantee that they will), the worst they can do is publish human rights reports favoring them and making their enemies (i.e. Iran) look bad - and I seriously doubt one can make Iran look worse than they already are perceived.

This is much ado about nothing.

Saudi Arabia heading the UN Human Rights Council would be like abolishing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and replacing it with "obey your government, seriously".

The truth of matter is that Iran probably has a better record on human rights. The country that should be leading the UNHRC is probably a Scandinavian country.

As I said before we should probably give more support to Iran, as they have oil and could counter the Saudi influence thus neutralising the threat they pose to anyone else.
