Saudi Arabia is reportedly planning to make a bid to head the United Nations' Human Rights Council, in a move that has been described as the "final nail in the coffin for the credibility" of the HRC. Reports of the bid come just days after Saudi Arabia posted a job advertisement for eight new executioners. This year it has already put 85 people to death in what has been branded by Amnesty International a "macabre spike" from the 87 people it killed in total last year. The country will move to assume lead control over the HRC after 2016 when the presidency is awarded to a new nation.
Yes, I checked, it wasn't posted on April 1st. So, what does NSG think of Saudi Arabia as the head of the UNHRC?
I, for one, think that it'll be hilarious, and I'm already planning a series of comedies including:
1. Yes UNHRC, women can be in the driver's seat!
2. All men are created equal! And women aren't men!
3. Once upon a time in bar that serves only virgin alcohol...
4. Iran bad. Iran very, very, very bad. UNHRC says so, and that Saudis are a head is a mere coincidence! Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran, in the name of Human Rights.
Which one would you like to see?
On a more serious note, UNHRC needs to be someone like New Zealand. Or Switzerland. Someone who actually has some credibility on the issue. Although if corporations are humans, I'm wary of Switzerland's role; they might have an anti-organic bias.
