Twice a year? I daresay all your electronic devices take care of it for you. So maybe you reset a couple of analog clocks. Big deal. I personally like long summer evenings.

Pretty much this. It's no big deal to me, the only things I have to reset are my wrist watch and the clocks on the microwave and stove, but the latter two I could really care less about.

How about keep daylight savings time but make it a law that every business has to open an hour late the day after?

So go to bed an hour earlier. That's only once a year. Do you want them open an hour earlier in the autumn?

Do you people really not know the point of daylight savings time? It's to make sure our time keeps up with the Earth's actual rotation. Without it time would eventually not correlate to daylight at all. Your clock could say noon but outside it's about to be morning.

Setting the clock forward and back keeps it so our waking hours have more daylight in them. Without it our time would eventually not correspond to daylight at all.

No. That's not even close to correct.

Corrections are made to referential time devices each year as the earth day isn't exactly 24 hours, but that has nothing to do with DST.

Hmm. That's along the lines of what I was thinking. I don't know what I confused it with, but no it wasn't leap years.

It is about making sure that there is more light during waking hours though.

Maybe I should tell microwave and oven manufacturers to stop putting clocks in their appliances. I should also tell my cable company to stop displaying the time on my boxes, because then I wouldn't be so damn confused about what time it is. :p

Everything feels better when there is more light in the evenings.

You can go out after dinner and do things, be active, get rid of that obesity.

So let's just abolish the original Standard time and keep everything the way it is today, forever.

Yes. You don't get a longer blanket by cutting off one end and sewing it to the other. Instead of resetting the clocks, just reset your sleep/awake cycle.

Standard, Daylight Savings... just pick one and stick with it! Seriously. It might have once served some useful purposes, but most of those are either utter bullshit or entirely obsolete. To highlight a couple of the common versions of why the bloody thing exists that I'm aware of:

"It's a holdover from when electricity was less common and banks and stores and stuff closed at sundown; by shifting the clocks twice a year, rural laborers and such could still utilize those services!" - One, pretty sure that excuse is a load of crock anyway. Two, if it isn't, in the US at least, this is no longer an issue thanks to electricity being fairly ubiquitous, better transportation, stores being open later, and so on.

"It saves energy because it's an extra hour that people don't need to use their indoor lights!" - Total load of crap. Whatever energy might be saved by not running the lights that extra hour is most likely going to be offset by a matching weather-related uptick in cooling/heating costs.

"Easier for kids to get safely to the bus stops by shifting the clocks so the daylight is earlier/later/whatever!" - Anybody seriously trying to claim this has no knowledge of what it is like taking the bus to school, because you cannot shift the clocks enough to make that work, not when kids probably have to be up and out there well before first light if they want to make it to school on time.

Meanwhile, there is evidence that suggests some serious problems caused by the clock change twice a year. (I'm sure someone doing full proper research and not five minutes on Google can find even more about studies on the subject.)

I don't really see the point of switching the clocks.

Having it get dark at 4 PM in the winter is depressing, so I don't think the current system is helping us to make the best possible use of our daylight. If tinkering with our clocks is not going to help us get the most out of our daylight, then we may as well leave them alone and save us all the trouble of resetting them.

It depends very much on latitude. Daylight saving makes a lot of sense in high latitudes (North or South). Nearer the Tropics it's more hassle than it's worth, and between the tropics there is no point to it at all.

That's an issue for any country which spans a wide range of latitudes (like Chile). They really need it in the South, don't want it at all in the North ... they don't have it because most of the population, and the capital, are in the North.
