I have family that lives in a central Florida suburb, so it's not quite, beach vacation style visiting. I have only really been in non urban places so I'm certainly surprised by this. Is Florida that bad a state compared to others though?

I was born in Connecticut, and have lived here my entire life. I used to like this state, but the economy, the politics, and the weather have killed those feelings. Now, I just want to move to a better state, hopefully while maintaining a job at the USPS (although upgrading to a full time route would be a bonus).

Well, I had a friend that used to live in a bad part of Orlando, and every time he heard a noise outside, he'd think it was gunfire. I mean, we'd be talking on the phone, and it the middle of the conversation he'd say, "Hold up; I think I heard a gunshot!" One day I told him that someone had been stabbed to death around the corner from my apartment in Boston and I had noticed the blood on the sidewalk before I read about it in the paper. He said in his neighborhood, it was just normal to see blood on the sidewalk. He is black, and there was one summer when he got pulled over about every two weeks -- mostly "random" stops rather than being pulled over for speeding or whatever. He had his license suspended due to a clerical error, and was then arrested for driving without a license and spent a weekend locked up before they straightened it out. If you look at news stories coming out of Florida, you've got Trayvon Martin, the convenience store clerk who got arrested for "trespassing" at his place of employment dozens of times, the guy who got arrested for serving food to homeless people, etc.

Anyway, yes, Florida is worse than other states as far as crime rates and shitty government. It is not the only place that has problems. I mean, Detroit is still there, but Florida is worse than average.

Aroostook.
Most land area of any county east of the rockies; including bigger than any county in Texas.
Highest moose density in the world.
We have a single unorganised territory with a population of 10 that's larger than Delaware.
More skidoos than cars.
Most places didn't get electricity until after the 70s, and you can still find people saving seed and plowing with horses in the back settlements.
We speak French here.
Summers are beautiful and comfortable and easy to sleep in, we might get a couple nights above 80 in a year total.

Best place in the U.S.
