A passenger plane for the airline Germanwings flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf has crashed in southern France, officials have confirmed.

The Airbus A320 making the flight for Lufthansa’s lowcost arm, Germanwings, crashed near the small mountain village of Barcelonette in the southern Alps. It had made a distress call at 10.47am then disappeared off the radar at around 11.20am, Le Figaro reported.

The French TV station iTele said there had been at least 142 passengers and six crew-members on board.

Airbus said it is aware of the reports of a crash but could not confirm.

I personally find it absurd we'd have a plane flying over the Alps carrying passengers. The weather conditions alone would be a uber red flag.

The average cruising altitude for commercial flights is 12,000 m (35,000 ft) give or take a few 1000m. The height of the Mount Blanc (highest mountain in the Swiss Alps) is 4 810m. Conditions at 12 000m will not affect an aircraft even if it happens to be 7 000m above a mountain.

I'm not exactly a aviation expert, but surely if you'd go over high mountains you'd either A, cause a avalanche on the mountain below, or B suffer some type of abnormality.

High capacity planes means you need fewer crashes to cause more deaths.

International traveling planes tend to go in near-stratospheric altitude, at least 4000m. Most mountains in the French Alps aren't that tall.

Considering the place it crashed in, we can go ahead and say that it crashed into a mountain. But, of course, it'll be blown out of proportion and a ten month investigation will be done on it.

I think it's an aircraft accident!

The Alps aren't that high. Passenger aircraft like the A320 can easily fly higher than any mountain, including Mont Blanc in the Alps.

Could be an issue with costcutting, ie not climbing to a safe altitude to save fuel on short hop, but "don't fly over the Alps" is absurd.

Planes fly over the Andes and the Himalaya range. Many more fly over the Rocky Mountain range in the US. Flying over mountains is not inherantly unsafe.

Fuck Switzerland. If they want naming rights of the "Swiss Alps" they can apply for EU membership. Otherwise their Alps are "European Alps", "Alps (other) interstitial with European Alps" or "Frosty Cones^TM".
