actually it appears they want to avoid flying the flag of any nation

not that they can fly a flag inside one room

Just bring a flagpole and that'll be good.

I assume by fly they mean just display in general. Like those little ones you can hang.

The accurate title of this thread is: "California college student government removes all flags from one student government work room"

But that wouldn't serve OP's ideological "ebul lieberals" agenda. :p

As people with the last name Guevara have been involved in mass killings and the infringement of human rights, not to mention the popularization and spread of militaristic dictatorship, I don't think his proposal should be allowed in the Student Council room nor acted upon. Since doing so could be viewed as an endorsement of such activities, or a noncontention with them that is antithetical to the ideas of life, liberty, and freedom.

I share my name with a cricket player, but I suck at cricket. Pretty sure Matthew's never committed genocide.

Yes, but people might get that impression because of the symbolism associated with that name.

Just as you obviously shouldn't be allowed to ever be introduced in public. You might be associated with the cricket player, and therefore the legacy of British imperialism. *nod*

Their reasoning for doing so seems to be opposition to the idea of flags. Better tell that to every country in existence, they never got the memo.

I'm pretty sure comparing a person who shares a name with a perpetrator of genocide is not the same as the symbol of a government that claims continuity with a government that committed genocide.

I agree. The Flag is a symbol of authority, conformity, and group-think. If they don't want it there then it shouldn't be there.

Nah, having too much fun with this one.

For the record, my tongue is firmly in my cheek in regards to this 'analogy'. The reasoning is just stupid in both cases.

Why the hell would liberals disagree with that?

That's not what the article says. It was neither banned nor related to the campus lobby.

I'd rather not quibble about which room it was in. This story is not the end of the world but it is quite disappointing to see young college students disown the American flag. I feel this is a recurring trend among youth. And I find it quite ironic that these students claim to uphold free speech and inclusion, yet don't want American flags in their work room or what not. Perhaps they want to ban all flags, but that'd be kind of silly don't you think?

“(F)lags construct paradigms of conformity and sets homogenized standards for others to obtain which in this country typically are idolized as freedom, equality and democracy.”

Setting standards of freedom, equality, and democracy is a bad thing?

Are they trying to be inclusive for fascists?

This is ridiculous.

Multiculturalism is not a bad thing. But this is sheer nonsense. I mean...what do I say to this?

Some do, some don't.

Hell, people have been rejecting the flag for years. Some people just aren't patriotic. What gets me about this is the reasoning.

Perhaps they want to ban all flags

THEY DO. IT FUCKING SAYS SO.

For Christ's sake. Now, fucking explain why your free speech to fly a flag in a university you don't go to is more important than their free speech to ban all flags from one of the rooms their student government works in.

A portion of the resolution reads: “(F)lags construct paradigms of conformity and sets homogenized standards for others to obtain which in this country typically are idolized as freedom, equality and democracy.”

Authored by student Matthew Guevara, the resolution goes on to state that since “the American flag has been flown in instances of colonialism and imperialism,” its display “does not express only selective aspects of its symbolism but the entire spectrum of its interpretation.”

The most exasperating part of this story is this absolute clusterfuck of an explanation right here.

I dunno, but the students in OP have decided it has to be all flags, in that room.
