Wow...I can't even begin to go into everything wrong with this article. Namely, EVERYTHING. It's the most obvious Christian patriarchy dominant article I've ever read that wasn't satire.

If you want to go over every point in the article, I'll pick it all apart for you. Be glad to.

People legitimately believe Mr. "Sodomy shouldn't be elevated to the status of race and religion" actually gives a shit about the LGBTQIA community? He's a politician in a country that favors same sex marriage and protection for LGBTQIA individuals. Of course he is going to create an image of seeming to support it if he wants any chance to to get elected. To do this though, he has to erase his history as a long-standing homophobic ass, who compared protections of sexual minorities to protections of pedophiles, polluters, and drunk drivers. No, history is not erased with a few empty words.

You can do that in Japan, I think. Someone married a virtual girl there, if I remember correctly.

+1 to this.

Appearing to take a moderate stance on a single issue doesn't not make you a right-wing asshole.

While I would normally fully side with such cynicism, it has to be remembered that the US has no shortage of reformed formerly virulent racists. It isn't unreasonable to think people could change their minds when old viewpoints are challenged more and more.

On that note, the power of a democratic system isn't that the man at the top will always agree with the populace, but that the populace can force them to do what they want if they want to stay in power. In theory, anyway.

Yes! They are supposed to be working for us. We elect them to represent us and do things we want them to do. If capitalism is the religion in this country, and it is, then just like any employee, we should be able to fire politicians who are no longer doing their jobs.

Actually, I agree with you. They should hold firm on traditional marriage.

haha AGREED. Maybe then other parties will actually have a chance, and America can cease to have such a bipartisan political system.

He supported a state constitutional amendment defining marriage between a man and a woman in 2008. In 2013 he stated that "traditional marriage" is what should be recognized by the government. All he is saying now is the same thing he has said before, that it should be a state issue. He speaks of same-sex marriage as seeking "greater protection" rather than the same protection offered to male and female couples, and fully believes that people should have the ability to refuse to grant such protections. No, he is not saying anything new. He is still a bigoted asshole that shouldn't be in any position of power, let alone the most powerful position in the most powerful nation in the world.

Judging by the actions of Republican judges over the past year or two, it seems to me that the GOP have decided that it's okay to be gay as long as you are otherwise ideologically correct.

Ah, I did not realize such statements had been so recent, thank you. If he should take actions in opposition to his former position, there should be consideration if his reflections, but he should open up fully about such reflections to reinforce their sincerity.

Yes, in theory a homeless, physically and mentally disabled, homosexual, transgender person of color has the same political power as an able-bodied, white, heterosexual, cisgender, Christian, male head of a multinational corporation, but we can easily see how much of a reality that is.
