57% Of Republicans Want Christianity As National Religion

Postby Yumyumsuppertime » Tue Feb 24, 2015 9:24 pm

Pretty much what it says on the tin. In a poll by Public Policy Polling, and in response to the question "Would you support or oppose establishing Christianity as the national religion?" (Q17), 57% of Republicans interviewed stated that they supported this idea.

This strikes me as troubling. While it's no surprise that the GOP has leaned ever more right over the past few decades, and has pandered particularly to the religious right during that period of time in a mad scramble for votes, I find it disturbing that a majority of people in the party are so openly disdainful of the Constitution. Previously, the rhetoric was at least hidden behind a veil of "We respect everyone's right to believe as they wish". Now it's more of a "If you're not all about Jesus, then you're not really an American".

Thoughts?

I am not worried about it.

It's a "dog whistle" issue.

doesn't mean much without definition of national religion

england (yes, england, not the UK) has an established church and they're doing a lot better on the overall secularism scale

e: though i suppose it's technically bad regardless

True, but only because they actually know the consequences of actually DOING anything about CoE being the national church. It's there, it's technically the official church, but they don't want any religious wars, so people usually don't make that huge a deal of it. Here in America, we haven't seen religious wars, so we tend to not understand the dangers. You can bet that the moment that the Constitution was amended to make Christianity the national religion, we'd see people enforcing the hell out of it, and oppressing whoever got in their way.

With current politics as they are you are more likely to get a constitutionally amendment to make Xtianity a national religion than an amendment repealing the 2nd amendment.

If I could apologize for conservatives I would. You take the Tea Partiers out of that poll and I'm sure you get a number in the mid 40's...which still isn't good...but again...I can't apologize for idiocy.

You still need 2/3 of the states.

Even die hard Conservatives don't trust politicians with the Constitution.

No need to apologize for something that you have no control over. The best thing that you can do as a conservative is to not be an idiot, and so far, you seem to be doing okay with that. Not that I know you that well, but the fact that you get the importance of the Establishment Clause is promising.

You need the bill to pass both Houses with 2/3 majorities and then to be ratified by 3/4 of the states.

So, what sect of Christianity? Or are is there going to be more "all Christian sects are the same" bullshit.

Edit: When I was a Pentecostal and when I was a Traditionalist Catholic, you learn that there are significant difference among Christians sects that can not be ignored. Hell, I have a SSPX priest tell me that Protestants have done more damage to world then anyone else.

About me: I have a strong dislike of religion and the current social justice narrative. Used to be a SSPX-like Catholic, but not anymore. And no, my nation does not represent my real views...most of the time.
Why I'm no longer a Socialist.
My pronouns: That asshole from /pol/, bigot, misogynist, transphobe, racist
And no, my flag is NOT used for RPing :)
