Was brought up on Sunni Islam. Upon coming of age I left Islam and became a deist. Some years passed and I saw no reason to believe in a god with no concrete evidence. I now identify as a LaVeyan Satanist, and I'm very discreet about it IRL. If anyone asks, I'm an atheist.

So... I was hesitant to post at first because... you know... the other thread was so recent but if, after 4 pages, the mods haven't descended like fat kids at a cake eating contest I suppose I'll finally join.

Eastern Orthodox Christian here.

The fullness of the faith lies in the Eastern/Oriental Orthodox and Anglican/Roman Catholic expressions. The rest are heretical schismatics.

Agnostic theists are, generally speaking, culturally theistic. Meaning that they were brought up to believe in a particular expression of theism but, in day to day activities, theism plays little role.

I am a Mennonite, a follower of the "Third Way". Unlike Protestants we do believe that good works count and should be encouraged.

Unlike Catholics, we believe we have direct access to God without mediation of priests or rituals.

You will seldom find a cross in our buildings (we have meeting places, not "churches"; churches are people, not architecture). Instead, there will be a mural depicting the Good Shepherd, or Jesus standing and knocking at the door.

Congregations sing in four part harmony.

Our clothes are simple but not austere; the age of LL Bean has suited us well.

We like to work and like to help. Where there is a natural disaster we will quickly shoe up in sufficient numbers to be useful.

We are peacemakers and pacifists. I attended a very moving ceremony which honored believers who had refused military service in WW II; instead, they served in (usually military) clinics. Those honored had endured the experience of soldiers flinging bedpans on them.

We reject pride, status, display of wealth, and so on. We are not supposed to run for or hold political office, although that position is currently under review. We cannot take a job which requires carrying a firearm. So, no prison guards or police. I know a pastor who lost his position simply because he was a constable.

We take forgiveness seriously. We will not participate in communion until we have sought out anyone we may have wronged. and received their forgiveness.

We are not holier than thou, because neither we not thou are particularly holy, period.

Cool! (Learning about new religions is cool! *Fist pump!*)

I have a painting of the Good Shepherd in my room. Actually, a painting and a statue. Jesus is AWESOME!

I like how your faith is serious about forgiveness. Forgiveness in general is often very underrated in society, don't you think?

The Catholic Church is not holier than thou, either. A lot of people think it is, but it's actually quite a wonderful, beautiful, warm faith, and I love it! Nor do I consider myself perfect, because, well...I've got plenty of little wrinkles in my life to sort out.

What kind of songs do you like to sing at church?

Grew up Catholic. I eventually left the church and became an atheist.

Attended a few pentacostal sermons, but the damage was done. I just sort of started seeing religion as a bunch of delusional horseshit.

A religion is not just a concept of how one relates to a god-concept (or other non-theistic perspective on the nature of the universe, as in some Eastern religions), but also a group of people who follow that religion's practices and subscribe to the belief system. One may therefore belong to a religion in the same way that one may belong to any other group or organization.

No, I am not searching. I think that the way has been under construction for a long time

But seriously, I've said that already on the previous page.

I'll citate it again here for you:

In any case, I specify: an agnostic Roman Catholic is someone that believes that there may be or may not be a God, but that if He is there, it then would be like the God mentioned in Roman Catholicism.

Thus, if you're an agnostic [insert religion], you believe that there may be a higher or magical power or not, but that if that power exists, you think it is the way that it is in the [insert religion].

That is what I am. To not offend God if He is in existance, but mainly because I respect the good in the universe and the traditions of my grandparets and elders, I go to church every Christmas, marriage and funeral. But aside from that, I don't have pretty much to bother with religion, nor with atheism.

Against: intolerance, radicalism, strong discrimination, populism, fascism, nazism, communism, totalitarianism, authoritarianism, absolutarianism, fundamentalism, strong religious expression, strong nationalism, police states

I am rather opposed to that idea of "belonging". Sounds way too similar to people being property of abstract concepts, such as groups (not the algebraic structures, those would be fine).

Nominally Christian, Reformed. I'm not affiliated with a particular denomination and neither is my extended family. I suppose it runs in the blood: we've always been flexible when it comes to faith.

Rural Souff Effrika - especially little Free State towns like Odendaalsrus or Kroonstad, is still quite conservative and many of my closest acquaintances from adolescence and childhood were Doppers (the group that used to ban dancing and singing). Nevertheless, my time in these areas left me with an unfavourable impression of the traditional churches and when I moved to the big city I was happy to leave it behind. I'm probably sounding like a good little communist here, but conservative Reformed sects in this country breed elitism, cultural paranoia, and dare I say it, racism. They're a big part of why many Christian Afrikaans people have such difficulty moving on from the past.

Ek bly in Australie nou, maar Afrika sal altyd in my hart wees. Maak nie saak wat gebeur nie, ek is trots om te kan sê ek is 'n kind van hierdie ingewikkelde soms wrede kontinent. Mis jou altyd my Suid-Afrika, hier met n seer hart al die pad van Melbourne af!
