Windows 10

Postby New Rhodinia » Wed Jan 21, 2015 12:33 pm

I'll admit: you got me, Microsoft. Free upgrade from Windows 7 and 8 and holograms, goddammit!

But seriously, it does seem like an awful lot of innovation for just a PC operating system. The problem I had with the briefing is that it was (as usual, it seems) all about how Windows 10 is going to "change the way we look at operating systems" as less about "here's what's actually new and will improve experiences from Windows 7 and 8". Holograms and real-time Skype are great, but not everything that makes Windows 7 and 8 great were mentioned. Gaming experience could be whittled down to holograms, office work and productivity programs could be whittled down to holograms, and pretty much anything else that sounded like true innovation for operating systems could be whittled down to... wait for it...

Holograms!

Bottom line: I'm excited, but I'm not at all in a rush to take the upgrade deal; I need to see more of what Windows 10 can do before I make the leap.

Apparantly they want to emphasise what a giant leap forward it is.
Of course, since the numbering goes like 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 98se, me, XP, vista, 7,8, 10 (ignoring NT flavours and the like) expecting a logical numbering scheme is a bit silly :P

Of course, other people claim it is because many lazy programmers put a version check into their software based on "if the windows version is 9something, show a message that they should update to something more recent". Could be true.

The problem with Windows 8 was that they made an operating system for Tablets, and then shittily ported it to desktop/laptops and phones. I think Microsoft needs to realize that their primary market is not mobile devices, it's traditional computers. I use Windows on my desktop and my laptop because I want a stable, powerful operating system that gives me all the tools I need as an advanced user, and is compatible with almost every program and application in the world. If I want a mobile operating system, I'll use Android. And that's apparently what most consumers thought too. Touchscreen and tablet/tabtop compatibility should be afterthoughts, with the main focus on the bones of it: the core desktop OS, not the other way around.

Windows is for traditional powerhouse computers. That's what they do best, and that's what they should stick to. You don't see Ford building jetliners, or Boeing building trucks, do you? Same thing for Windows. But if they have to have those other gimmicks, they should be secondary to the main purpose of the OS.

sure but Microsoft wants in on the other businesses too. so this will cover computers, tablets, phones, and xbox. that gives all users of the various product lines a reason to choose Microsoft for the rest of the Microsoft offerings.

It was an example that perhaps didn't quite match up to facts, but his point still stands and is very true. Microsoft have their own area of excellence, they should focus on that.

It wasn't suited for desktop computers or laptops without touch screens. W7 did everything W8 could do without the annoying touch screen functions. W8 should've been limited to Windows phones/tablets.

As someone who sells computers for a living, I can tell you that there's a reason for that. If I had a penny for every customer who called back or came back in because the OS was so ass-backwards, frustrating and just downright confusing, I'd be able to buy Microsoft. Maybe it makes more sense to younger people who grew up playing with tablets, but it's not for PC users.

They got rid of the "worse than Hitler" live tiles start menu and replaced it with a smart menu similar to previous iterations, but more customizable and flexible. While doing the usual of making it faster, more powerful, more optimized for newer technology, etc.

I'm surprised how much Windows 8 has grown on me. I remember going to buy my current laptop about 6 months ago and I looked high and low to find any Windows 7 machines on the market. I had used Windows 8 on my girlfriends computer and I absolutely hated the tabs and the moment I got Windows 8 I was looking at ways to bring the old start menu back.

But once I sat down with my laptop and spent genuinely a good few hours sorting out the tabs and downloading the Apps I wanted I've been really happy with it. I like the look of it and when I turn on my news, emails, Facebook, Steam is all there when I log on. Next to that all the office stuff I use. It's really convinent and looks quite cool.

I'm interested, but I'll wait to upgrade my operating system (despite it being totally free to upgrade!), because I'm worried they might experiment with a subscription model, or something equally hideous. Call me crazy, but I actually like Windows 8 a lot, and if Windows 10 doesn't strike me as the better deal, I'll just stick with what I've got.
