The Queens Speech : Did you listen?

The Queens speech this year was pretty spot on in my opinion. People often talk about her potential abdication I doubt she will ever stop till she dies. She is the last true monarch, its not a job to her its a service, and she continues to serve this state. I like that we have someone who is trained for their life to serve the state in an ambassadorial position, plus it acts as a barrier between the population and a potentially tyrannical government.

I know some people don't like her but most do. God bless the Queen!

Your thoughts?

I liked it, and I don't think she'll abdicate. She's going to try and outlive Charles out of spite.

Of course- my entire family (within reason) stood to attention around the television set when Her Majesty spoke. As for the speech itself, it was marvelous- Her Majesty excelled Herself this year.

This is just silly. If the PM and the elected government were to go the full Cromwell tomorrow, they wouldn't give two shits about the Queen's opinion.

As always, a very nice Christmas broadcast on part of Her Majesty.

They cannot so simply sneak into that position though. They would have to all out declare it in their disregard for the monarchs powers.

As an American, I couldn't care less about the UK's figurehead monarchy, in fact I wish our media would stop doing specials on what the royals do every waking moment of their lives.

On another note, the queen is a good person, and may she continue to have a long reign.

Just consider it a trade for our having to listen to news reports about ridiculous US celebrities.

Fair enough.

No, but I read about it. I oppose the idea of monarchy but I've no objection to the sentiment expressed or to Elizabeth herself.

To be honest, I just read a article or two that summarized the speech. Regardless, I agree with many of her sentiments, and have a pretty good deal of respect for the woman.

I say this as an American and a irreligious person, God Save the Queen. :p

I hate the Monarchy and would much prefer my country was a Republic. However as a Republican I recognise that the present Queen is the best asset the House of Windsor has. I never watch the Queen's Speech as I don't think her views have much relevance in today's Britain. The Queen will never abdicate.

It was on the TV, but I didn't pay any attention.

I can not for the life of me understand why someone would be against or even hate the British monarchy, they have absolutely no political power whatsoever and otherwise it's a beautiful symbol of tradition and unity.

And yeah yeah I know they live in fancy castles. Paid by you. 60 pence per year.

Get over yourself

I conveniently missed our Supreme Overlord's speech once again this year.

It is important we respect our Head of State, as shown when my family and I stood to attention.

I don't agree with the concept of monarchy in any form. It isn't the money as any political system requires funding. It's simply the idea that our head of state should come from one family ad infinitum. We don't allow that for any other job. And I don't believe it should be the case for our head of state.

Why?

It's not like she'll ever know.

And I'm not particularly a big fan of "respecting" someone merely for the position they were born to.

Except, the role of the United Kingdom's head of state is entirely symbolic, and the head of state has no real power. So, I really don't see the issue.

So egalitarianism?

I have absolutely no clue whatsoever what a fictious flag of a fictious state on a game on the internet has to do with anything discussed here. But okay
