Bin Lorry Crashes in Queen Street, 6 Dead

Postby Xerusia » Mon Dec 22, 2014 12:43 pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-30580114

Earlier today a tragic event saw a bin lorry driver have a (believed) heart attack while driving in Queen Street, Glasgow. The area of Glasgow is incredibly busy, especially at this time of year, when everyone is doing their last minute christmas shopping. The bin lorry travelled 300 metres and has critically injured 8 and tragically killed 6.

For people living in Glasgow, the police force has confirmed that there was nothing sinister about it, like the Clutha accident last year. If you are from Glasgow and worried about relatives or friends possibly being injured or worse, killed in the accident, a dedicated number has been set up for queries on family or friends killed or injured.

01786 289070

After travelling the 300 metres, it luckily crashed into the Millennium Hotel, injuring and killing no one else and stopping it's path of damage. One witness described the driver as slumped over the wheel, possibly adding evidence to him having a heart attack or fainting.

Eyewitness Stephen McNeil said: "I was coming out of a shop and we looked over to the left and we saw this woman screaming and this man on the floor. We looked around the road further and we seen this bin lorry just mounting the kerb going left to right just hitting people where they were standing. Such a horrible scene."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is horrible. At this time of year you would expect a few traffic accidents, but this a major event. Glasgow is a heavily populated city, and I was at the time about 20 minutes away from the scene (shopping with my mum). Opinions?

Also,

- Should everyone be provided first aid training to assist with these situations?
- Should first aiders be immune to legal repercussions if providing assistance?
- Should the NHS fund dedicated pre-hospital teams at all A+E departments for such situations?

Terrible and all, but it does appear to have simply been an accident that could not realistically have been prevented, so I'm not sure what discussion there is to be had.

Socialist healthcare at fault. A private system would have detected early indicators of the heart attack and prevented this tragedy.

Might I suggest people take this cue to donate to their nearest pre-hospital medical teams such as BASICS. Those teams are worth their weight in gold for these situations.

I didn't even here about it until my mum turned on the radio when we were going home at 4:45ish. We were done with Queen Street at about 12:00 so I feel lucky, not really stressed or traumatised.

Tragic, but I'm still trying to figure out what the heck a "Bin Lorry" is. It sounds dangerous, we should ban it. *nods*

Everyone should be offered free first aid training but it should never be mandatory. I wouldn't trust a forced first aider as far as I could throw them

- Should first aiders be immune to legal repercussions if providing assistance?

Of course not. Doctors face repercussions for bad care and so should anyone taking a healthcare role

- Should the NHS fund dedicated pre-hospital teams at all A+E departments for such situations?

Don't know enough about them to say

Yes, it should be part of primary education to learn basic medical care. I think if the overall public had a better concept of 'triage' then we'd have fewer incidents of people simply sitting and gawking at crash sites while people needlessly bleed out.

Yes as well, first attenders should be immune, supposing there's a reasonable proof that they were competently offering palliative aid. And before anybody asks 'well, what's reasonable?', remember that it's a reasonable burden of proof that keeps people from prison for murder. Meaning some logic must be applied.

I don't have enough info on the NHS to make an opinion.

Oh so pessimistic with the palliative there.

Oh really? Liberal healthcare is not at fault here, a private-owned hospital would do just the same mistakes public hospitals.
