At least abortion deals with important issues. The War on Christmas is just pointless.

The point being, the matter is solved (Abortion is here to stay alongside linguistic prescriptivism). Yet people seem hell bent on whipping that poor bastard horse out of the grave.

Do supermarkets and fast food chains must stop selling food when some religious group has fasting. Because it would be offensive to sell food during this time...

If store wants to write Merry Christmas on a banner they have every right to do so.

And if they want a banner saying "Happy Holidays" then they have that right as well.

I don't even have to comment, the internet already made a pic that sums my opinion up perfectly!

Also, the "war of Christmas" is bullshit. We need to have a serious discussion about the much more serious war Christmas has been waging on Thanksgiving and Halloween for decades now. Christmas must be pushed back across the Black Friday border so that Thanksgiving and Halloween can have their days in peace!

More to the point: Not a Christian here, and I give precisely zero fucks whether someone tells me "Merry Christmas!" or "Happy holidays!" and so on. ALL of the happy/merry expressions basically translate to mean the same damned thing: "I wish you well."

If you're a Christian that gets bent out of shape over "Happy holidays" or an atheist that gets bent out of shape over "Merry Christmas!" UR BOTH DOIN IT RONG.

Dissapointed that the Hogswatch is not included as specific holiday.

Depends on the context. If your dealing with strangers who may not celebrate Christmas, "Happy Holidays" is probably the better choice. If you know a person celebrates Christmas or have good reason to assume they celebrate Christmas, then go with "Merry Christmas"

Merry Christmas is fine. It's a public holiday that has nothing to do with religion for a very large number of Americans.

We have a few solutions here:

1. Take Christ out of Christmas and make it a secular holiday. This will make Christians mad.

2. Use 'Happy Holidays' or create some sort of secular holiday for everyone to enjoy. This will make Christians mad.

3. Promote Christmas and Christmas only, which will make everybody but Christians mad.

4. Leave it as it is, which Christians are getting angry about.

Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays

Postby Parhe » Thu Dec 18, 2014 4:31 pm

Don't understand why so many people would be offended. I'm not offended when people greet me with something alluding to some religious event I don't follow. Then again on the other hand if someone knows another person is offended by a certain greeting then the person should use another greeting. People are just being too sensative as well as not taking into account other people.

Honestly the Northern American Protestants need to take a look at how the Latin American Catholics (and others) celebrate Christmas in such a strictly religious manner then proceed to shut the hell up.

I worked retail for a disturbingly long time in that 'liberal cesspool' that is the Bay Area and alternated, pretty much without much thought one way or the other about it, with 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy Holidays' or 'Here's your Nelly CD...' and in that disturbingly long time the only time anyone ever flipped their shit was when someone lost it at one of our clerks for saying "Happy Holidays."

Now, this is an anecdote on the interwebs. I acknowledge that I might as well have said, "A gryphon appeared in the aisle one day and bit the head off someone saying happy holidays with a shirt that said, "I represent Christian America" and screamed "Say Merry Christmas motherfuckers" before taking a giant shit in the rap aisle and flying off. Anecdotes are not trends and not something any of you dudes can verify.

But, I have to say as an atheist who has lived in the scary places Conservatives tell their children about to get them to behave, I have not run into anyone who really gave that much of a shit about 'Merry Christmas' or even had anything against it except for the ravenous materialism and cardboard sentiment that was given lipservice in its name. Generally speaking they were all for the overall idea of togetherness and generosity.

But...what the fuck do I know.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.
