Actually, black and gold/beige is relatively neutral, and gray IS neutral, so you could probably make a lot of colors work with the carpet. Maybe not particularly LOUD colors, but some of the softer shades could work. I think aesthetically speaking, the larger issue is that brick facade. If possible, I'd suggest doing something with some drywall or something to cover the brickwork so you've got a flat surface. The dark shadows from the bricks make things look smaller than they are and more cramped; a flat surface in something like a pale blue would probably open the space up a lot without clashing with the carpet pattern.

Like I already said, black, gray, and gold are actually pretty neutral, so matching a color isn't as big a challenge as originally advertised. I'm partial to pale, lighter colors, but you could also run with the "this carpet is loud" and go for a loud color, too. XP
