There are plenty of Christians who are bad, and plenty of atheists who are good. But before I decide to go off on a rant, I'll address something stated in your post.

Your friends reasoning has no issues. Almost everywhere in the New Testament, it says, "If you pray in my name, you will receive". That's not an exact quote, but the gist of what Christ said to his followers. Matthew 7:7, Matthew 17:20, Matthew 21:21, Mark 11:24, John 14:12-14, Matthew 18:19 and James 5:15-16 all say that. And God never helps, so yeah...
I'm an atheist, and I don't go around and rape and murder people. Most atheists don't. I'm well informed on Christianity. I GO TO SUNDAY SCHOOL. I read the Bible. I know that religion and science are compatible, most atheists do. I've read "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization". It's a good read, probably true. But I'm not a believer.
Lastly, banning atheism is a total infringement on basic human rights. I have the right to believe what I want to believe, and so do you, and so does everyone. I don't care you're a Christian, that's great, but don't be a total ass and refuse people their rights. Most people, atheist, Christian, or otherwise, will agree with me.

Atheism shouldn't be illegal because that would mean that governments take it seriously. Just laugh the atheists out of the room and remove them if they get too rowdy. We'll have our pure wives, our moral family, and brotherhood. Leave them with nothing. Spiders and flies are a nuisance but we crush them and continue. It's just a phase.

Well, for some it is a reasonable conclusion that if God is all loving and all powerful, but he never helps those who pray to him then God is either not all powerful (I.E. he cannot help), he is not all loving (he did not help those who asked him for help) or he is not real. So it is certainly a reason to disbelieve in God.

I'm not sure about Romance of the Three Kingdoms as quality literature, but, as literature (even without reading it) it's probably better than the Bible. Really, the Bible has no real plot or character development - it's inconsistent and choppy. Thematically, it's all over the place. It's barely readable.
