The NSG Unofficial Carrot Discussion Thread

This thread is intended as a one-stop-shop for all things carrots: cultivation, husbandry, preparation and consumption.

That being said, I myself grew and harvested around 15 pounds of carrots this past growing season. I had some issues with pests early on (no, not rabbits), but after I ground and applied a bar of Ivory Soap and some garlic bulbs around the perimeter, they grew fairly well. The flavor was on-point, the texture had a good "snap" to it, and they didn't have the "metallic" taste that sometimes accompanies store-bought carrots.

So I ask you, NSG: do you grow carrots? What are some of your favorite ways to prepare them? How do you rank them amongst other vegetables? If you don't grow them, where do you get them?

Carrots are good for your eyesight. Go on, stick them in your eye, thinner end first.

No doubt. I heard that British fighter pilots in WW2 ate so many carrots that their skin turned orange.

I like beetroot + carrot juice (optionally citric fruits or dark leafy vegetables might be added), carrot cubes + fried garlic with the water used to boil rice (it makes it taste better), and carrot cubes with potato and egg white cubes (optional: adding good quality petit-pois) for a nice mayonnaise dressed salad (after a few hours of refrigeration).

So, we don't have conditions to garden vegetables here, only fruit trees and the occasional medicinal bush. Generations of dogs lived in the yard, that is also a cemetery of them. Not to say how this was originally a very muddy terrain, my deceased grandfather used construction waste to make it fit to house-building, but it ruined irreparably soil qualities.

Ewwwwwww, no!

Yam sometimes, Arracacia xanthorrhiza for those who like it. I recommend meat broth instead of dairy to make it savory, though.

Arracacia goes extremely wonderful with shrimp. <3

I don't grow carrots, but I do eat store-bought ones. I buy them because they are cheap.

Did you know that the orange color we associate with carrots only became common as Dutch farmers grew them in favour of the other colours to honour the ruling family of the time, the House of Orange?

Carrots are delicious. I can't grow them though because my only outdoor space is a balcony (I mean, it's a big balcony, but I'm shit at keeping potted plants alive). I still like them.

And I found some purple and white ones a few years ago, they were interesting (I roasted them with other veggies, some oil and a few herbs, the purple carrots dyed everything purple).

Huh. Never tried that. I did once have some wonderful sweet-and-sour carrots, though.

I wonder why this isn't taught in culinary school nowadays.

Carrots are amazing and tasty, but never cook and serve first try. No one like squishy carrots.;)
