He was told three times to put his hands in the air. Instead of complying, he reached in the back of his belt and pulled out what looked like a handgun. It's on video.

Too bad, but in this case the shooting was justified.

The cop would've just beat the boy to death if he didn't have the gun, I'm sure of it. Just watch the video, that kid was walking over to that car as if they had called for him and bam, they shot him through the window.

Proof that he was told to put his hands in the air? Is there a recording? To me the video looks like the cops called him over.

hey, i heard about this in my 1st hour in school, and i live in the murder mitten (FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW, IT'S A NICKNAME FOR MICHIGAN) my fellow classmates said if the police officer had to shoot, shoot him in the knee to slow the kid down, not shoot him in the head. The cops are in the wrong in my opinion.

Yeah, it seems pretty abrupt.

Apparently it was also a new officer without much experience; that was probably a contributing factor.

The harsh truth -

A dead person can't harm anyone. A person just tazed may have the energy to pull off a few rounds.

Lethal force necessary.

Tasers can't be reliably used in scenarios like such. Officers are trained to not use their tasers in these situations because they don't always work. If someone's on PCP, cranked up on meth, or just if the prongs of the taser strike the body too close together, it won't stop them.

The officer involved made the tactical, reasonable choice.

The video also skips and there's no audio, so we don't know what happened or what verbal warnings were given before the officer fired his weapon. However, I guarantee that a verbal warning(s) were given before shots were fired.

Yeah nahh

This brings up an interesting point, by the way. You say that killing a child is not justified. What about abortions? Secularists typically support that, after all. Where do we draw the line? A child in the womb is helpless and defenseless, but this 12 year old waving the gun around was neither helpless or defenseless, he was violent and hostile.

These things are not equal and this is not the thread for that.

Armstdern wrote:> Kills a child

Yeah nahh

To be fair, this was the first time where I'd actually put much of the blame with person relaying emergencies to the officers in question. Hearing that it's most likely a toy looking like a firearm would've helped calm the situation; but I can see how an officer would freak out if a child pointed something gun-like at him and do something stupid because he thought it could be real given that every last tart in America can own a bloody gun and they can more often than not find their way into the hands of children who, as previous stories have told us, will not necessarily handle these with the care required.
And it's not easy to tell that toy from an actual gun. Hell, even if that thing was neon pink I'd be careful because I'm pretty certain it's possible to paint guns that color and still have them work anyway. Not necessarily very encouraging odds to wager one's life over.

A horrible situation for all involved: The child didn't comply with the officer's request, likely thinking it part of the game played. The officer hadn't been told it was likely a fake and feared for his life, making a choice that didn't need to be made. A person working at dispatch fucked up on their job by omitting vital call information. The caller...I'm not sure...it sounds like they were pretty certain it was just a toy, I'm torn whether calling the police was necessary for that.

Yep, it was a rookie like I said earlier. He probably had never experienced something like that. That and he was misinformed didn't help things.

Look at the video, they just drove up and shot him. It was murder, plain and simple. The officer that shot him should be locked up for good.
