American Third parties

Postby Humo » Tue Oct 28, 2014 3:36 pm

In America the democrats and the republicans have pretty much complete control of the government, while other parties or independents have very little chance of getting elected. However people are increasingly frustrated with both of these parties. So i ask Nationstates when do you think there will be a party that can challenge the dominance of the two major parties. I feel like the American people are starting to realize that both the democrats and the republicans don't have our best interest at heart. I feel like a party like the libertarian party can become that party in the next 10 years.

Unless there's a major electoral reform in the United States I don't think minor parties will ever become noteworthy.

PS: You should probably fix your spelling.

The system itself is flawed, and the two-party dominance is merely a symptom of the flaw. So, yes, the system needs to be reformed.

The system needs reform. As it stands, the two dominant parties are too rich compared to the minor parties, and they don't stand any chance of running any sort of effective campaign unless we set things on a level playing field, give the other parties a chance.

I think thrid parties and independants don't have a shot nowadays against the two party system. I do believe that some time in the future the system shall be overhauled and people can actually be represented and have their voices heard.

It's not really a difference of wealth, it's a flaw of the system. The US' method of voting is atrocious, the worst in the western world.

With our plurality voting system, two parties is what you get. Major parties could be supplanted, but the result will keep being two parties.

Third parties won't ever have much impact unless they are just a version of either two parties with a new name.

First and most obviously, in terms of the President if a third party ever became prominent then the election will most likely be kicked back to the House because no one will reach a majority in terms of the electoral college, which will favor the party with a majority in the House.

For other elections, many states have rules that a candidate must win with a majority or there is a runoff. Again, not good for there being more than two candidates.

And even if one did get elected to the Senate or congress, unless he or she caucuses with a party and agrees to basically be a member-in-fact of that party, then they won't get committee assignments and will be a pretty useless member of congress.

The entire system is designed for there to be two parties, and so unless the two parties decide to change the system to their disadvantage, we need to work with what we have.

If I'm remembering my Shadowrun lingo correctly, it would be a party where people watch 3d videos, though those were quite antiquated at that point considering simsense had been around for quite some time.
