The last time this was in the news the knife was allowed IF and only IF it were dulled and sewn into the sheath, making it useless as an actual weapon. I'm guessing similar measures were taken here.

After further research, I've found the ideal solution: in New York, kirpans that are brought to school must be secured in sheathes that make them impossible to draw. If the zero tolerance policy towards knives is to remain in place, then this is the best way to let kids bring knives to school without making hypocritical exceptions: by making sure the blade is incapable of being used as a knife. Sikhs get to carry their religious symbols, nobody runs the risk of getting stabbed, and schools can keep doling out the same punishments they've been giving to non-Sikhs with knives that aren't secured in sheathes that prevent them from being drawn.

Edit: Ninja'd.

That is literally nothing like a pocket knife, and you are being deliberately obtuse in an attempt to further your ideological stance on the matter.
Try harder or not at all.

What ideological stance? What conspiracy do you imagine me to be part of?

Yes, it is like a pocket knife. It's about the same size. Pocket knives are harmless, anyways.

I wouldn't say harmless, but the level of fear schools seem to have of them is exaggerated to the point of absurdity.

I personally don't see what the deal is. In Canada, it's alright if we bring in everything but the main firing components (eg receiver, bolt, barrel) of a firearm to school, for construction 10-30.

And those walnut rifle stocks are HEAVY. You could beat someone to death with that.

Not an issue, if we let admin know why we're bringing it in.

Similarly, I sometimes totally forget I have a 4" utility/Stanley dual-bladed knife in my bag. No one cares about that, it stays in the bag, I have no trouble with it, neither does anyone else.

I see no issue with it period, as long as it stays away. I wouldn't care whether it could be drawn or not, or whether it were sharp or not. However, if it gets flashed around, it's an issue.

No, this was WHILE he was raising me and even nowadays.

He treated me both as a son and as a friend. It's not that difficult. He gave me enough leeway to look at him as someone I could approach as my best friend while keeping the respect I should have for him as a parent.

Sure, I got punished, but my father never treated me in a typical son-father manner. I'm not spoiled rotten either.

I really don't understand America with regards to weapons. People could probably buy an rpg launcher legally yet when something like a tiny harmless knife is brought onto school grounds or when a student puts his hand in the shape of a gun it causes uproar.

Well, papercutting someone with the desk would be quite a feat in and of its own :p

But I agree, if it stays away I have no issues.

In fact you can legally buy an RPG-7. They're rare as shit, and you need to live in a state where you can get a Form 4 DD stamp. Then get dummy warheads with live propellant charges and rockets, (or get live warheads with the DD stamp, and shell out $200 per shot), and you now have a legal RPG-7.
Edit: But I digress.

That's impossible as long as rules are "zero tolerance." The entire purpose of such rules is literally to remove any subjectivity and critical thought from the disciplinary process.
Zero tolerance policies in schools are almost always a bad thing.

Islam = religion
Something a guy made up so he could bring a purple dildo to school = not a religion
